93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet in color, the 2014 Zinfandel Fighting Brothers offers an abundance of black fruit preserves and blueberry pie notes plus underlying spice cake, incense and chocolate box hints. The richly fruited, full-bodied palate is packed with dried berries and spice layers, framed by velvety tannins and much needed freshness, which contributes a lively lift to the weighty finish. (LPB)" (02/2017)
K&L Notes: Winery notes: "The grapes were harvested in the early morning hours and transported immediately to the winery. In the cellar, the grapes were de-stemmed into an open-top fermenter (95% whole berry), cold-soaked for 48 hours, and inoculated with a low rate of yeast to allow the wild yeast to have an effect before the cultured yeast takes over. All lots were co-fermented to maximize the complexity and harmony of the blend. After fermentation, the wine was pressed to new and one year old French barrels for 11 months aging."

The palate has a very vibrant and succulent feel with bright strawberry and cherry flavors, delivering a long, succulent and juicy finish. Drink or hold." (09/2019)

I must admit that I'm late to the fully appreciating the significance of the Hanzell estate. In all my years in the trade I was always aware of Hanzell but lacked a true appreciating of both their history and their dedication to making the best wine imaginable. However, after visiting the property early last year, I consider myself a convert. Established in 1953 on the southern tip of the Mayacamas range, this winery has both history and as well as a perfect perch. It should come as no surprise that the winery has been quietly turning out world class wine for half a century. The second label "Sebella" is sourced from like minded Sonoma coast growers. It receives the same care and attention as the "Estate" bottling. This is a gloriously delicious wine. It is both complex and accessible; possessing all the grand character of premium Pinot Noir.

When I hear the name Hanzell I think of their dedication, being so true to the nature of where their wines are coming from, and the age-ability of their wines.Pleasant aromas of flowers, beautiful vibrant red fruits. Great acidity and elegantly juicy. There are so many Pinots that I like, but some I do not forget, and this is definitely one of those few.

Having any bottle of Hanzell to me is a breath of fresh air. I've been a bit of a fanboy after learning that Jason Jardine took over as director of winemaking, and visiting the property last year and trying their complete lineup. The 2017 vintage of Hanzell Sebella is a fine example of what Sonoma pinot should taste like. Notes of pomegranate, hibiscus, and a little bit of an herbaceous character, it reminds me of all the qualities I look for in Sonoma Coast pinot.

[2014 Sesta di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino]( [2014 Sesta di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino]( ($44.99)
93 points Vinous: "Moderately saturated ruby-red. Exotic mineral- and citrus-driven aromas of red cherry, blue fruit liqueur, blood orange and Asian spices, with a sexy floral nuance gaining strength with air. Supple and expansive on the palate, showcasing sweet red cherry and rather savory dark plum flavors lifted by just enough bracing acidity. Densely packed for a 2014 Brunello, at once fleshy and broad but also lively and precise, showing excellent power and cut on the strikingly long finish, characterized by youthfully dusty tannins and a hint of candied violet. One of the best Brunellos of the vintage, it just lacks the sweetness and ripe flesh of warmer vintages. Another standout Brunello from what is, given its small size and limited annual output, the least known of the top fifteen-twenty Brunello producers or so. (ID)" (03/2019)
91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Sesta di Sopra 2014 Brunello di Montalcino offers a great level of intensity and fullness that was not always easy to achieve in this vintage. This mid-weight wine is the result of skillful winemaking efforts for sure. Dark cherry and cassis segue to spice, aniseed, grilled herb and barbecue smoke. The wine ages in large oak casks for three years. Some 4,000 bottles were made. You have to admire these promising results. (ML)" (02/2019)

This has the classic Sesta di Sopra nose of earth, sage, and leather, with hints of complex earth, stone, and plum notes. It is a supple, aromatic, pretty wine, lively on the palate, that has weight and persistence. If youre in Montalcino, itd be a perfect match for your lunch or dinner, which undoubtedly would include wild boar.

[2016 Barde-Haut, St-Emilion]( [2016 Barde-Haut, St-Emilion]( ($49.99)
96 points Vinous: "Readers will find a rich, flamboyant wine in the 2016 Barde-Haut. There is not a ton of subtlety here, but I am not sure that matters all that much given how immensely pleasing the 2016 is. Crushed rocks, graphite, lavender, blackberry, plum, and violet infuse a Saint-Ãmilion that offers tremendous textural richness as well as vibrancy. Most importantly of all, the 2016 is flat-out delicious. This is a decidedly opulent, dark Saint-Ãmilion with all of the elements impeccably balanced. I loved it. (AG)" (01/2019)
95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Lastly, the 2016 Château Barde-Haut might end up being the best wine ever made at this address from the Garcin-Lévêque family, and it certainly ranks with the crème de la crème of the vintage. Dense purple-hued with awesome notes of cassis, black cherries, spring flowers, damp earth, and violets, it hits the palate with incredible purity and precision, a deep, multi-dimensional texture, sweet tannins (from ripe fruit, not sugar), and a building sense of minerality that shows on the finish. It has the depth of fruit and elegance to shine even today yet will benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and evolve for two decades. 95+" (03/2020)
94 points James Suckling: "This shows such complex and beautiful aromas of flowers, lavender, light spearmint and currants. Medium to full body, very fine tannins and a long finish. All about finesse and length." (04/2019)
93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Barde Haut is composed of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, it gives up expressive wild blueberries, kirsch, baked plums and spice box notes with hints of cracked pepper, lavender, garrigue and Provence herbs. Medium to full-bodied and richly fruited in the mouth, the palate bursts with blue fruits, framed by firm, rounded tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long. (LPB) 93+" (03/2019)
93 points Neal Martin in Vinous: "The 2016 Barde-Haut has a pure black cherry and boysenberry bouquet with touches of crushed violet. The palate is quite dense and perhaps one of the most powerful Barde-Haut I have encountered in recent years, offering more black fruit than red, laced with tobacco and a pinch of black pepper. There is good backbone to this Saint-Ãmilion, and it deserves three or four years in bottle." (01/2019)

The first impression is that this is so focused, pure, and polished. Lovely aromas of blueberry compote and cassis lead to a palate that is full of juicy black and blue fruits, a remarkable textural refinement, and seamless, lightweight tannins. It is clean and fresh from start to finish. It will be fascinating to see how this ages. We've been a fan of this property for a long time at K&L, and even though we've adored some of the past vintages on release (and with some age), it is even more exciting to see how the style has evolved to a more detailed and nuanced take on these recent vintages.

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Made from 100% Red Willow Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Willow is another gem from this great winemaker. Deep purple-colored, with a huge perfume of blackberries, crème de cassis, cedarwood, pencil lead, and graphite, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness and depth, nicely integrated acidity, and building, ripe tannins. Give bottles 3-4 years and it too will cruise for 15-20 years or more. Winemaker Chris Peterson continues to fashion some of the most impressive wines in the State. These are always more classical in style and show plenty of acidity and structure in their youth, yet they blossom with just short term cellaring and are brilliant wines." (04/2019)
95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Bursting from the glass with impeccable precision, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Willow Vineyard is the real McCoy, boasting a focused frame of fruit on the nose that shows depth and breadth in layers of aromasblackberry, dark cherry, licorice and clove-laced spices flutter over a bed of roses. I can't stop smelling this wine! Full-bodied, the wine unfolds and expands across the palate with complexity, tight structure and beautifully managed tannins, ending with a thought-provoking and long-lingering finish. The wine has a still-tight expression that will age beautifully for years to come. It will serve you well to seek out a bottle of this world-class wine. Only 140 cases were made. (AM)" (12/2019)
94 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine is all Cabernet, coming from a single block at this esteemed vineyard. The aromas are locked up on first pour, with notes of cocoa, dried leaf, dark roasted coffee bean and spice emerging over time. The palate is soft and flavorful, showing an exquisite sense of balance and detail to its dark chocolate and earth flavors. Tightly wound tannins give support. The acid and tannin balance is spot on. *Cellar Selection* (SS)" (03/2020)

[2018 Kistler "Les Noisetiers" Sonoma Coast Chardonnay]( [2018 Kistler "Les Noisetiers" Sonoma Coast Chardonnay]( ($59.95)
Kistler's Les Noisetiers is a study of their Sonoma Coast sites: "The name refers to the toasted hazelnut characters that we notice year in and year out from these sites. This cuvee is an appellation-focused Chardonnay. The explicit purpose of this wine is to illustrate a regional character of western Sonoma County highlighting mineral tones from vineyards with sandy Gold Ridge soils. The main sources are the Vine Hill Vineyard, Dutton Ranch and Trenton Roadhouse vineyards. After thoughtful selection at the sorting table, whole clusters are fed by hand directly into the press. An extremely gentle 2-hour Champagne program is used to produce the best juice with the finest solids. The juice is consolidated in tank and then, without cold settling, is transferred directly to barrel with its fine lees. Driven solely by naturally occurring yeasts, the wine is barrel-fermented. Kistler Chardonnay fermentation temperatures are warm by California standards, but very much like Burgundy was made 20 years ago. The wine is fermented bone-dry. After a complete malolactic fermentation, the wine sees 11 months of barrel age with no battonage. The wine spends an additional 3 months in tank before being bottled without fining or filtration. There is a smaller percentage of new oak used on the Les Noisetiers in order to highlight the soil-driven character of this wine. This minerality is rare in new world Chardonnay."

[2017 Domaine Pierre Usseglio "Cuvée Mon Aïeul" Châteauneuf-du-Pape]( [2017 Domaine Pierre Usseglio "Cuvée Mon Aïeul" Châteauneuf-du-Pape]( ($69.99)
97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "As always, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée De Mon Aïeul is all Grenache (from La Serres, La Crau, and La Guigasse) that was not destemmed and was brought up all in used demi-muids. It's an extraordinary wine, offering a mammoth bouquet of kirsch liqueur, black raspberries, ground pepper, white flowers, and spice. Full-bodied, concentrated, and opulent on the palate, with silky tannins, it's not going to match the 2010 or 2016, but its a magical, elegant, layered wine that does everything right." (08/2019)
94-95 points Vinous: "Brilliant ruby-red. An expansive, spice-accented bouquet evokes ripe red fruits, incense and potpourri, and a smoky mineral element adds urgency. Juicy, seamless and appealingly sweet, offering concentrated raspberry, boysenberry and floral pastille flavors that firm up slowly and turn spicier on the back half. Shows serious heft, but there's a distinctly graceful quality as well. Finishes sappy, gently tannic and extremely long, leaving a suave lavender pastille note behind. (JR)" (12/2019)
94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Rich and almost painfully intense, from yields that were reduced by coulure to only about six hectoliters per hectare, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul is steadfast in being all Grenache and all whole cluster. Licorice, chocolate and super ripe plums appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied and velvety, with a long, warm finish. (JC)" (08/2019)
93 points James Suckling: "Another stirring release under this label, showing rich dark fruit and earthy notes with plenty of spice. Tarry notes as well. The palate has a very plush, ripe and rich feel with juicy, ripe dark berries and plums, really bathed in deep, long and smooth-honed tannins. Drink or hold." (10/2019)

The Cuvée Mon Aïeul is all Grenache in this vintage, and has suffered from some of the lowest yields this cuvée has ever seen. In 2017, they were down to six hectoliters per hectareChâteauneuf allows up to 36 hectoliters per hectare. It is no surprise that this is as deep and concentrated as you could imagine. This is an evocative wine that will linger on your palate for days.

[2015 Malartic-Lagravière, Pessac-Léognan]( [2015 Malartic-Lagravière, Pessac-Léognan]( ($74.99)
96 points James Suckling: "Deeper wine from the get-go with dark violets, mocha, cassis and blackberries. The palate has suave, smooth and sturdy tannins and terrific length. Very polished and seamless with flavors of fresh black cherries, blackcurrants and blue plums. Best from 2022." (02/2018)
96 points Vinous: "The 2015 Malartic Lagravière is just as fabulous from bottle as it was from barrel. Rich, voluptuous and dramatic, it captures all of the natural intensity of the year. Black cherry, plum, mocha, chocolate, licorice and French oak build into a crescendo of stunning aromas, flavors and textures. This is in an especially dark, sumptuous style, but it all works beautifully. The 2015 was positively thrilling each of the three times I tasted it. (AG) 96+" (02/2018)
96 points Wine Enthusiast: "Full of black-currant flavor, this firm wine has structure and a rich texture. Its bolstering tannins and vibrant acidity mark out an age-worthy selection. Spice tones and a dry core set the stage for a slow development into an even more complex and fulfilling wine. *Cellar Selection* (RV)" (04/2018)
94 points Decanter: "One of only six estates classified in both red and white. This is great, with rich, smoky coffee grounds and not a hint of bitterness. It's easily one of the best Malartics I have tasted, hitting another level and showing improvement from its en primeur state. Very enjoyable with great persistency, it's not trying too hard but still makes its presence known. (JA)" (12/2017)

93 points Whisky Advocate: "Deeper, richer, more viscous, and more intriguing than the 12 year old (and not as sappy as the 18 year old). Complex and intriguing, with raisin, orange marmalade, grape skin, sugar plum, cinnamon bun, raspberry preserve, mixed nuts, and coal ash. Nice tannic grip on the finish. The best of the bunch, and very impressive! (Summer 2010) Reviewed by: John Hansell"
K&L Notes: The 15 year is finally back! After ceasing production in 2015, the Revival has returned. Aged in PX and Olorosso casks the malt is classic, rich, and unctous. It's full of honeyed tones, chocolate, and dried fruits. I was nervous for the return, but it's every bit as good as the last bottles in 2015, possibly even better.

The magical distillery on the south shore of Islay, like all south shore distillers, is quite unlike any other. But Laphroaig has a certain place in the hearts of the hardest core peat lovers. They're the last distiller down there to malt a portion of their barley on site. Their complex system of tiny stills create the most peculiar and enticing peated spirit in the world. The quality and consistency of their casks is second to none. But over the last decade, what was once a staple in the independent bottling repertoire has completely disappeared. Laphroaig is simply not selling casks any longer. And when we do find casks they're usually in very inactive hogsheads and declassified to their trade name, "Williamson." Now that's not a huge problem because Laphroaig always tastes good, but bottlers can't replace even those few casks the prices have gone absolutely bonkers. Signatory recently bottled a sister cask those we sold here just three years ago for $200, Laphroaig from the Fall of 1997, for $700. And by God those bottles sell. But a beautiful butt for a not completely abhorrent price, we jumped all over it. Thank the Lord of the Isles that we did, as it's a complete and utter masterpiece. Some purists askew the idea of Laphroaig in active sherry, but much of the experience is limited to low proof distillery bottlings and finishes. It's truly a stupendous find and going to be one of those casks that people remember for years to come. Collectors and drinkers alike take note

Laphroaig is one of those incredible things that is both polarizing and unifying, sometimes between the same people at the same exact time. I personally adore almost everything I taste from this special distillery. Yes there are some underwhelming distillery bottlings that might feel a bit over manipulated, but the whisky is never ever bad. The great heights that can be achieved by Laphroaig are truly unbelievable. And uniquely, some of the very best from this special distillery are not even very old. The very best Laphroaig I've ever had the great pleasure of tasting are no more than 10 years old, given they'd have been distilled 40 or 50 years ago, but the fact remains that Laphroaig is often more special in its youth. For years Laphroaig has felt like a bit of a secret that you weren't sure you wanted to share with everyone you know. Particularly that was true of the special single casks that we'd come across in warehouses and whisky shops throughout Scotland. But in the current climate, where the distillery itself has no need or use for trading or brokering excess production, what was once a special secret to find and share is now an endangered species completely. So when we get offered casks like this we expect them to be unfathomably expensive. But even if this were twice the price I'd still have bought it. This is that perfectly idiosyncratic Laphroaig, apt to have you disagreeing with yourself. Deep wafting peat, a mix of bitter herbs, salty ocean trawler, candied apricots and diesel engine. Old leather furniture, Seville oranges, not quite tropical, but not so severe as it might be. On the palate a building sweetness envelopes the powerful smoke as it wafts toward the olfactory system. Dark chocolate, salted plums, menthol and magic. A total dream and a secret that deserves to be kept.

Every so often time stops, a dizzying array of pieces fall into place, and you're left with one special moment. Such is drinking this masterpiece. Tragically, Chieftain's is going away. One of the most storied and high quality bottlers in Scotland has pulled out all of the stops for it's swan song. Aged to perfection this cask toes the line perfectly between every facet of Laphroaig. It's equally salty, malty, fruity, floral, and smoky in that amazing way that only Laphroaig can be. In addition there is a splendid cigar box spice provided by an amazing barrel of the highest quality and perfectly matched to the whisky. Not overpowering, it is just robust enough to blend seamlessly with everything on offer from the spirit. My best Laphroaig drinking experience was having John Campbell, Distillery Manager, walk me through the classic 10 year, a single cask bourbon barrel roughly 14 years old, and the legendary 30 year. The insights those 3 carefully chosen whiskies provided into the soul of Laphroaig is something I will never forget. It set off a personal and more indepth study of the whisky behind the smoke and iodine that the distillery is so famous for. This one cask highlights the traits that makes the the malt from this special place so complete and such a rarity in the flavor spectrum without giving up that core profile. Tasting this malt and then going back to Laphraoig 10 will forever unlock for the drinker the often overlooked and underappreciated glory of the classic expression.

Laphroaig very infrequently releases anything new, let alone a single cask of something new. Fans of the classic Laphroaig style will not be disappointed here, but will also be pleased to find new tastes and expressions. Rich texture and creamy peat notes get a kick from a slight jalapeno pepper spice in the back. This extremely limited and special release could retail for much higher given its scarcity. Lucky for us it doesn't.

Since barrels of single malt age differently and produce a range of flavors it is always a treat to taste something and see the variation on a theme from the regular releases. This tasty barrel is very interesting and fantastic. The nose has a burst of smoke that is almost pretty ( a word not usually associated with Laphroaig) with toasty undertones. In the mouth it is classic Laprhoaig with smoke , iodine, salt and malt. With water it opens up and becomes softer. There is a long finish with an interesting touch of spice. This single barrel is unique and interesting.

If my family drank, this is a bottle Id take with me to our holiday dinners. This bottle screams autumn with notes of ume plum, burnt caramel, oak spice, and cinnamon graham crackers on the nose. The palate is fatty, savory, and sweet and I can imagine it going perfectly with turkey and stuffing. Its warm and inviting, I just want to cuddle up with it next to a fire and look longingly at the glass.
