[2018 Astrolabe Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough]( [2018 Astrolabe Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough]( ($19.99)
95 points Bob Campbell: "Bright, fresh and concentrated sauvignon blanc with punchy regional and varietal flavours including capsicum, nettle, gooseberry, melon and subtle passionfruit. A deliciously accessible wine that delivers everything I expect from Marlborough Sauvignon and more." (05/2018)
K&L Notes: No. 4 on Bob Campbell's list of Top Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs of 2018! A break-through vintage for winemaker Simon Waghorn. The Astrolabe Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is made from grapes grown across three Marlborough sub-regions: the Wairau Valley, the Awatere Valley and the Kekerengu Coast. The skill is not only in the sourcing of such pure fruit but also in the skillful belnding of many components to create a seamless, complex wine with phenomenal texture a persistent flavor.
[Thomas-Smith.jpg]( Smith]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 02, 2019
Part of Simon's brilliant craft is his ability to build beautiful blends from multiple vineyard sources within Marlborough, each with their own sub-climates and flavor profiles. The end result is a masterful blend that balances complexity, brightness, and gorgeous fruit character. The 2018 Astrolabe has an elegant nose with notes of honeycomb, lemon blossoms, and subtle hints of passionfruit and flint. On the palate, you'll find plenty of lime, stone fruits, and minerality. There is just a touch more weight on the body of this wine than a typical Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and along with its bright snap of acidity, this is a serious wine that shows how good the best of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc can truly be.
[diana-turk.jpg]( Turk]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 28, 2019
Classic Marlborough Sauv Blanc without any cloying stereotypes! The tropical fruit is there, plus lush stonefruit, but both are lifted by bright acidity and a crisp finish. This is a sophisticated white that still feels fresh enough for a summer day. The food pairings are endless, and its barely twenty bucks for one of the most serious producers in NZ. Wow.
[willblakely.jpg]( Blakely]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 27, 2019
Astrolabe arrives just in time to replace the breakout hit from Fromm and save your summer. Gorgeous tropical fruit flies out of the glass without a moment's hesitation. Tautly balanced and intensely aromatic, it defies logic with a wealth of passionfruit and guava but with a firmly crunchy, dry finish. This wine is what caused us to fall in love with New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, which is something I have had more and more trouble finding in recent months. The enviable freshness and ease will have you coming back for more every time. Get it before it's gone.

[2017 Torbreck "Woodcutter's" Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia]( [2017 Torbreck "Woodcutter's" Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia]( ($19.99)
93 points James Suckling: "Loads of brambleberries and dried elderberries are framed against dried meat, bark, vanilla, mocha and dark chocolate. Plush yet energetic on the palate, this weaves round, chewy and decadent tannins and runs them through a luxurious tapestry of dark fruit. Drink now or hold." (06/2019)
93 points Wine Spectator: "Aromatic and stylish, opening with violet, white pepper and subtle sweet cream notes. The core gushes with huckleberry and wild blueberry flavors, revealing shades of rosemary and apricot. Supple and smooth, with tannins hanging in the background, providing appealing traction. The finish sails on and on. (MW)" (05/2019)
K&L Notes: The name Woodcutter's stems from David Powellâs several years spent working the Scottish highlands as a lumberjack in the Torbreck forest. This wine reflects the up and coming Shiraz vineyards of the Barossa, rather than the battle hardened old vines that make up the core of Torbreck's other cuvées. Dense, rich, and opulent, this wine combines great fruit purity with texture, complexity, and finesse.
[Thomas-Smith.jpg]( Smith]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 05, 2019
When you think of Australian icons, there are a few names that come to mind: Penfolds. Henschke. Torbreck. The Woodcutter's Shiraz is a pristinely executed wine that brings the obsessive attention to detail in the vineyard and thoughtfulness in the winery you would expect from a globally recognized producer. What I really love about this wine is its undeniable varietal characterâthere's black pepper, charcoal, and gamey elements. It might be going a bit too far to call this smoked meat in a glass, but it's not that far. On the palate, it's extremely well balanced. It has have excellent, moderate acidity that doesn't take over the palate, but still provides lift and structure to the wine. There's a slight element of rich sweetness of fruit that brings weight and texture, and a sizzling spicy character that nearly makes you reach for a glass of water. Even with its benchmark status, this is a phenomenal value at this price.
[kirkwalker.jpg]( Walker]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 11, 2019
This wine delivers. It delivers delicious Barossa Shiraz without any baggage. Is big? Yes. Is there a lot of fruit? Yes. Is there spice? Yes. Is it over the top?... No. It is medium full bodied with lots of dark fruit, spice, enough tannin to square up against the fruit but not enough to dominate a burger. What time of year is it? Summer. What are you doing for a dinner? Grilling. What are you drinking? This.
[chrisdepaoli.jpg]( DePaoli]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 04, 2019
Dark, big and juicy. This is classic Barossa Shiraz offering cassis, blackberry, plum, and pepper. Tobacco and eucalyptus brace the sides. A wine for backyards and summertime, this classic Barossa Valley juice is a fine companion to classic California BBQ. Get some.

[2008 du Glana, St-Julien (Elsewhere $30)]( [2008 du Glana, St-Julien (Elsewhere $30)]( ($21.99)
92 points Wine Enthusiast: "From the privileged soil of St.-Julien, this is an opulently rich wine. The weight is obvious as is the sweet fruit. But there is complexity as well, spice and black currant fruit powerful and concentrated. For long-term aging. *Cellar Selection* (RV)" (12/2010)

[2017 Hartford Court Russian River Valley Pinot Noir]( [2017 Hartford Court Russian River Valley Pinot Noir]( ($29.95)
95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A crazy good value, the 2017 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley is the appellation release from this team, and it comes from all of the estate vineyards across the Green Valley, Laguna Ridge, and Sebastopol regions. Complex notes of strawberries, cranberries, violets, pine forest, and flowers all flow to a medium-bodied Pinot Noir that has a kiss of salinity and marine notes, ripe tannins, and a great finish. This beautiful wine competes with wines costing 2-3 times the price." (06/2019)
[ryanwoodhouse.gif]( Woodhouse]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 21, 2019
Wow! This new release from Hartford Court is just off the hook. It tastes just like one of their high-end single vineyard releases but at less than half the price! Explosive aromatics of bing cherry, sandalwood, clove, and warm earth. For me, it is a perfect, benchmark expression of the Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. The palate is highly polished, pure fruited, and silky soft. Waves of ripe lush fruit ebb across the palate. The finish is lifted with exotic Asian spices, judicious French oak, and heightened bright acidity. So pure and well well made. It's stunning that Hartford Court can put out wines of this caliber at this price.
[Stefanie-Juelsgaard.jpg]( Juelsgaard]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 11, 2019
I was really impressed by this bottle. Even though Russian River is traditionally one of the cooler climate growing sights in Northern California, producers have been making riper and fatter wines lately. Not so with Hartford Court. This wine is very fresh and pretty with a medium weight palate and great expression of fruit. I think the understated nature of the label often sees this wine overlooked when compared to some of the garish cartoon labels that might capture attention these days, but luckily the nature of this wine speaks for itself. I will definitely be adding this one to the top of my list for my recommended Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs.
[muriel-sarik.jpg]( Sarik]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 10, 2019
This a pretty Pinot. Noir. It's a medium-bodied wine, so no jammy fruit here. It's balanced, has good acid, and the fruit has an elegant touch. On the nose, it has some savory notes. This kind of Pinot at this price, doesn't come around very often. Get it while it's in stock!

[2014 Orben Rioja]( [2014 Orben Rioja]( ($29.99)
94 points James Suckling: "Very dense and tannic, but there's also plenty of fruit with mulberries on the nose. Is this pushing the envelope one step too far? Although the wine has powerful tannins, somehow it balances out and tastes fresh an amazing feat. Better from 2018." (01/2018)
93 points Wine Spectator: "This red shows depth and density, with black cherry and blackberry flavors supported by firm, well-integrated tannins and juicy acidity. Notes of smoke, licorice and mineral emerge on the finish. Harmonious. Drink now through 2028. (TM)" (10/2017)
K&L Notes: Orben was founded in the mid-1990s by the Anton family of Artevino fame (Izadi, Vetus, Villacreces) and a group of restaurateurs/investors. Located near the village of Laguardia, the estate farms 79 small vineyard plots all planted between 1945 and 1954. Due to the proximity and relative homogeneity of these sites located at 550â675 meters above sea level and on calcareous clay-limestone soils, the Anton family made the decision to create a separate estate to promote this individual terroir. The main variety is Tempranillo with a small amount of Graciano. All the vines are head pruned and are farmed sustainably. At harvest, the grapes are picked by hand and transported to the winery in small boxes, once there, they are destemmed, crushed, and fermented in stainless steel tanks. Aging takes place entirely in French oak barrels for between 12 and 15 months. )
[kirkwalker.jpg]( Walker]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 13, 2019
Old vine (60-70 years old)-head pruned Tempranillo with a little dash of Graciano all from small, organic vineyard plots that are owned by some of the most famous restaurateurs in Spain, who wanted to create a modern expression of Rioja Alavesa. It had me at old vine, Tempranillo, and Alavesaâa magical combination in my book. From early on in my career, there has always been something magical/romantic to me about the wines from the Basque subzone of Rioja. It could be the limestone... it is the limestone. When done right, the precision, the lift, and the extract from wines grown in soils with limestone just resonate with me. It delivers on that limestone promise. The fruit pops and has focus, there is beautiful core to it that runs straight through to that fine mineral dustiness on the finish. Now is time to pay quick attention to the label, there is no age designation, there is only the vintage. This is modern Rioja, there is enough oak to contributed to the texture, enhance the fruit, and also add an exotic balsam aromatic but not too dominating. This Rioja is an expression of fruit and terroir, not of oak and winemaking.

[Nicolas Maillart "Platine" Brut Champagne]( [Nicolas Maillart "Platine" Brut Champagne]( ($34.99)
92 points Wine Enthusiast: "With vines on the Montagne de Reims, this producer has a good line in Pinot Noir, which forms 85% of the blend. The wine is rich while well balanced and ripe. Now with just the right amount of bottle aging, it is full in the mouth, showing attractive apple and ripe pear flavors. The aftertaste is soft and fresh. (RV)" (12/2015)
92 points Wine Spectator: "An elegant, aperitif-style Champagne that offers layers of flavor, with notes of Gala apple, tangerine, smoke, biscuit, cumin, honey, lime zest and salted butter. Texturally refined, with a bright juiciness to the acidity. (AN)" (12/2010)

This is the most exciting new Champagne producer that we have added to our lineup of direct imports in a very long time. This entirely estate grown Champagne comes from plots in Ecuiel, Bouzy, and Villers-Allerand from mostly old, massal selected plots. The four years of ageing on the lees have given this wine a lovely creamy texture and beautiful, toasty aromas. You can feel the power of the Pinot Noir, with some subtle dark cherry fruit and savor. The most incredible thing about the wine is its complexity, which I found kaleidoscopic, something I am not used to in such a fairly priced wine. Every sip is a discovery!
[scottbeckerley.gif]( Beckerley]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 06, 2019
This is a really wonderful new producer that we have added to our small-estate lineup. Very unusual in that, right off the bat, there are toasty, golden apple aromas, and a hint of mushroom. So, you're thinking, this is going to yeasty, toasty, and rich with fruit? No, ma'am! On the palate, Gala apples, lemon zest, cream and orange. Surprisingly clean, thanks to the low dosage, and a total surprise. Refreshing and delicious!
[elsa-baez.jpg]( Baez]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 01, 2019
We have several top-notch quality champagnes in the grower-producer section that are under $35 and the Maillart Platine Brut Champagne is a top contender. It's got everythingâcherry and stone fruit aroma notes intermingling with a creamy mouthfeel and finishing bright, fresh, and elegant. I remember thinking how can this possibly be a champagne under $35, when we first tasted with Gary and was happy to hear it is one of our newest direct import! If you're looking for a nice bottle of bubbles to bring to a dinner party, this is a definite crowd pleaser!

[2015 Rodney Strong "Reserve" Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon]( [2015 Rodney Strong "Reserve" Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon]( ($39.95)
97 points Decanter: "Wonderfully refined, sumptuous and complex. Notes of dense ripe red fruits, generous blackcurrants and warm spice with cedar wood, tobacco, dark plum and chocolate. Powerful and rich yet with real elegance and finesse." (05/2019)
[ryanwoodhouse.gif]( Woodhouse]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 03, 2019
This walks a beautiful line between classic and modern. There's an old-school feel about the moderate extraction and savory aspects of this delicious Cab. But there's also generous ripe fruit and plenty of flashy, smoky oak. It's perfectly proportioned and refined with resonating flavors of smoked plum, red currant, cocoa nib, scorched cedar, pipe tobacco, and new leather. Approachable now, but with plenty of power for a long life in the cellar. A great showing from Rodney Strong and a perfect example of how top Sonoma Cabs can hang with the big guns from Napa at a fraction of the price!
[Thomas-Smith.jpg]( Smith]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 03, 2019
There is a ton of dark, black cherries on the nose of this wine. At moments, nearly reminiscent of cherry cordial, this is a big, rich and velvety Cabernet. The palate the tannin is softened with just a hint of tannin and plenty of sweet fruit. This is all about soft, delicious, decadent fruit character. Really nice wine.
[nealfischer.jpg]( Fischer]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 07, 2019
This Reserve Cab from Rodney Strong aims to be a bridge between new-world and old-world Cabs. It succeeds quite nicely at that goal and got 97 points from Decanter to show for it. It starts off as a fairly big wine, full of luscious dark fruit, tart acidity, and a little earthiness. As it progresses, the fruit comes out even more boldly, but it never gets to the point of being juicy. There's a good amount of toasted oak and big tannins to provide great structure and spice. This wine is ready to drink now if you like a more fruit-forward Cali style Cab, but it's certainly set up to age elegantly and will develop more Bordeaux-type qualities as it matures in your cellar.

[2016 Purlieu "Le Pich" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon]( [2016 Purlieu "Le Pich" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon]( ($49.99)
94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Le Pich features very pretty notes of crushed blueberries, blackberries and chocolate-covered cherries with hints of violets and cedar chest plus a waft of bay leaves. Medium to full-bodied, packed with vibrant black fruits and plushly textured, this buxom beauty is ready for biz, finishing satisfyingly long and spicy. (LPB)" (10/2018)
K&L Notes: Purlieu Winemaker, Julien Fayard began his winemaking career in Provence. Then a move to Bordeaux proved to be where he defined his winemaking style - at none other than the world famous first growth, Château Lafite-Rothschild. He also worked at Smith Haut Lafitte in Pessac-Léognan. After moving to California to be with his Sonoma native wife, he settled in Napa. Julien worked at Quintessa before joining Atelier Melka, where he spent five years as the Director of Winemaking. During that time he worked with a variety of clients including Lail Vineyards, Gemstone, and Dalla Valle.
[ryanwoodhouse.gif]( Woodhouse]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 04, 2019
The pedigree and winemaking prowess behind this wine is very obvious from the first sniff to the last sip. Purlieu winemaker, Julien Fayard was born in Provence but earned his stripes in the hallowed cellars of Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Smith Haut Lafitte. After moving to the USA with his California native wife, Ãlan, he landed a job at Quintessa and then began working for cult superstar winemaker Philippe Melka. Eventually becoming Director of Winemaking for Atelier Melka, Julien got to work with the very best vineyards in the valley and groomed his style to perfection. How crazy is it then that you can enjoy the fruit of his labors in a wine priced under $50? A guy who trained at Château Lafite and Dalle Valle (to name just a few) getting access to THE best fruit in Napa Valley with 94+ points from Wine Advocate, and for under $50! If you like the idea of drinking cult-level Napa Cab on a regular basis (without dissolving the kid's college fund) Purlieu's "Le Pich" Cab should be on your radar. It checks all the boxes and is incredibly delicious and satisfying. Showcasing an amazing purity of fruit, perfectly measured ripeness, and polished structure. A very precise and exacting wine-making style. It's a real gem.

[Suntory "Hibiki Japanese Harmony" Japanese Whisky (750ml)]( [Suntory "Hibiki Japanese Harmony" Japanese Whisky (750ml)]( ($74.99)
91 points Wine Enthusiast: "The newest blended whisky offering from Hibiki is burnished gold in the glass and has a bold aroma that mixes vanilla, fresh pear and a hint of smoke. The smokiness comes forward at the first sip, wrapping around a core of oak and vanilla custard and finishing long, with a mouthwatering bitter chocolate note. *Best of 2016* (KN)" (03/2016)
90 points Whisky Advocate: "Poised and complex, with typically lifted fruitiness: strawberry ice cream, pineapple, peach, balanced by delicate oak, bamboo shoot-like delicacy, then lemon. The palate is more rounded than that very forward nose, with toffee notes adding some weight. A touch of smoke comes along in the mid-palate, before fruits and caramelized coffee biscuits. Water allows the flavors to flood the palate. Exemplary blending skills and classically Hibiki. (DB, Winter 2015)" (12/2015)
Wine & Spirits: "You can't be a Japanese whisky enthusiast without having noticed that theres a shortage of the stuff. What once was readily available is now hard to find. What once was affordable now costs various bodily limbs. It is due to more than a fad. The best Japanese whisky is remarkable stuff, and none are better than the top single malts from Suntory, Yamazaki, Hakushu and the blended whisky Hibiki. Hibiki comes in 12-, 17- and 21-year-old expressions, but even the youngest of these is now allocated. Harmony, the newest release, carries no age statement, indicating that it contains younger whiskies than other bottlings. Nevertheless, this is a welcome concession, with Suntorys classic sense of balance, nuance and delicacy. *Best of 2015* (JM)" (11/2015)
K&L Notes: The newest incarnation of Suntory's hugely popular Hibiki series, this time without an age statement attached. The same soft, mellow, vanilla-laden flavor is still here, however. It's a true harmony of pure Hibiki flavor.
[andrewwhiteley.gif]( Whiteley]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 10, 2019
If you haven't had Hibiki Harmony recently, you must retry it. In all honesty, it's not something we've opened for the staff here in a long time, since it is so tightly allocated and sells out so quickly. It just wasn't necessary. With our most recent drop of one of the most asked for Japanese whiskies on the market, I decided it was time to make sure the staff all knew what exactly we had. I must say, I was blown away by the richness in particular. The flavors are a delight, crisp apple, fresh stone fruits, a touch of piquant pepper, and a surprising amounts of vanilla and caramel. The palate has much more weight, presumably from a higher malt content, than I recall. It coats the tongue, but is never heavy. The finish is clean and bright and decidedly entices you to another sip. We spend most of the year out of stock on this whisky just sadly telling customers, "no, it's not available." Today, we are sitting flush and want to let everyone know it's here. The trick is, with the insane popularity of all true Japanese whisky, it won't be here for long.
[Stefanie-Juelsgaard.jpg]( Juelsgaard]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 11, 2019
I was particularly excited to try the 'Hibiki Harmony' since it seems all of the Japanese whisky's are becoming so popular they sell out before most people get a crack at them. There is a definite sherry note present on the nose, and the palate is light, yet rich simultaneously. Japanese whiskies generally seem to show as more elegant and prettier than those from other countries and this one fits that description perfectly. Though we did receive good stock this time, it won't last with the following the 'Harmony' has. Don't miss this opportunity because it probably won't come again and it's only going to become harder to acquire.

[2016 Fattoria Le Pupille "Saffredi" Maremma Toscana]( [2016 Fattoria Le Pupille "Saffredi" Maremma Toscana]( ($89.99)
99 points James Suckling: "Incredible aromas of dark berries, lavender, rosemary, licorice and dried flowers. Spice. Full body and fantastic tannin texture with great length. Goes on for minutes. Muscular yet wonderfully formed and refined. A glorious Saffredi. Drink in 2022." (12/2018)
98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Saffredi brings full-throttled intensity in a very well-balanced wine. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%) and Petit Verdot (10%) spends 18 months in mostly new oak. This vintage is compact, firm and precise, with lovely floral aromas on the bouquet in front of blackberry and plum. Long oak toasting gives the wine tasty notes of spice and cinnamon and rounds the bouquet off nicely. The mouthfeel is soft and velvety. This is a complex, integrated and absolutely beautiful wine. (JC)" (05/2019)
93-96 points Vinous: "One of the highlights in this range, the 2016 Saffredi is a hugely promising wine marked by a beguiling combination of vertical structure, energy and concentration. Black cherry, lavender, spice, plum, sage and lavender all pulse with remarkable energy. Massive and yet remarkably vivid for such an intense wine, the 2016 is shaping up to be a real jewel of a wine. (AG)" (03/2019)
[gregstclair.gif]( St. Clair]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: May 07, 2019
I have to say, I loved the 2015 vintage of this wine for its sweet fruit purity. It was ripe, yet focused, and all around a fantastic wine. Yet the 2016 vintage for me is insanely good, fruit concentration yet so much focus, drive, and palate lift. There's no jiggle just supple, smooth power. If youve never experienced this wine, it isn't a classic Napa fruit bomb (no offense Napa), it shows more wild herb, Tuscan brush, earth, spice, leather, and then gobs of fruit. It is linear with intense focus and length. This wine is intense and stunningly good. Saffredi is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot but grown along the Tuscan coast a short drive south of Bolgheri and compared to prices in that neighborhood, it's a giveaway.
