A touch of pepper from the 60% Grenache in the blend gives this warm wine a touch of spice. Drink now. (RV)" (06/2019) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Intriguing notes of fraises des bois appear on the nose of the 2018 Coteaux Varois en Provence Rose, a blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Cinsault and 10% Syrah. It's light to medium-bodied, with subtle spice and earth shadings, a fine, silky texture and ample length on the finish. (JC)" (04/2019) K&L Notes: Coteaux Varois en Provence is in the western middle of the Provence appellation, and is ringed by hills and mountains to the south, north, and west. The soils are mostly limestone and clay with the two main distinctions being altitude (most vineyards average 350 meters) and a continental climate influence. The surrounding mountains and hills act as natural barriers. Château Trians has the added benefit of having all north-facing vineyards preserving moderate and cooling temperatures. In 1989, under new ownership, the 50-acre vineyard began modernizing and shifted to organic production. [keithmabry.gif]( Mabry]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 05, 2019 This is exciting project from Varois is making some pretty fabulous Provencal rosé. Farmed organically, it is filled to the brim with ruby red grapefruit, light strawberry tones and a kiss of classic Herbes de Provence. It has the right balance of freshness and light structure to give it meaning all through rose season. This is sure to provide many a backyard excursion as the perfect complementary wine. [sarahcovey.gif]( Covey]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 06, 2019 Rosé season is upon us! The Trians is always one of my favorite daily summer rosés, because it is as delicious as it is affordable. Pretty raspberry, strawberry, citrus and spice with lively acidity and freshness. It's time to pull together a cheese, fruit and charcuterie plate, raise the patio umbrella, crank up some tunes, and enjoy this rosé with friends and family! Cheers to Summer! [kajstromer.jpg]( Stromer]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 05, 2019 Summer is firmly taking its grip on southern California and the clients are clamoring for chilled rosé. The Trians has become my Provencal rosé of the moment as it embodies most of what I seek in these wines. First and foremost, the wine is refreshing with a touch of tart cranberry, a dusting of strawberry essence, and aromatics of roasted herbs. While being Grenache dominant, I love the generous dollop of Cinsault, rounded out with Syrah. Secondly, the terroir here looks like it was destined for great rosé. 50 year old vines are situated on hillsides comprised of clay and limestone overlooking the Rhône Valley. It's perfect as an aperitif or accompanying light summer fare such as fresh olives or an herb roasted chicken. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2015 Matias Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay (Elsewhere $30)]( [2015 Matias Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay (Elsewhere $30)]( Price: Hidden 93 points Wine Enthusiast: "There is a tightly wound dairy quality to the nose of this appellation blend, which combines yogurt-like aromas with lime pith and ash. It's zippy, fresh and bright with acidity on the palate, where tightly woven tannins carry hints of sandalwood, oak and citrus flavors. (MK)" (12/2018) [ryanwoodhouse.gif]( Woodhouse]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: May 30, 2019 Firstly, this is a screaming deal at this one-time, deeply discounted price. But perhaps more importantly—the wine is flat out delicious! I personally don't think California Chardonnay has ever been in a better place than it is right now. By and large, the "oaky / buttery" monstrosities of yesteryear are gone. Most producers have realized that richness, ripeness, and new oak are not the end game for this varietal. This bottling from Matias is a great example—vibrant, fresh, even racy, modern Chardonnay, with lovely cut and verve on the palate. It still has the texture and weight that most Chardonnay drinkers are looking for, but the minimal oak influence and refreshing acid line allows the wine the surge across the palate with sublime flavors and surprising length. Sourced from two of the most highly regarded vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands: Sierra Mar and Soberanes. Both vineyards were planted and are farmed by the Pisoni and Franscioni families—the most highly regarded growers in the region. This is top notch SLH Chardonnay for an absolute steal of a price. Time to stock up! [jordan-stone.jpg]( Stone]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: May 31, 2019 Wow, the nose is so fresh. The smell of Chardonnay and wet stone just leaps from the glass. If you tasted this blind you might guess this chardonnay was produced in Green Valley, Occidental, or Russian River. Just great. Vivid and smooth. [nealfischer.jpg]( Fischer]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: May 28, 2019 This wine floored me. It is very Burgundian for a Californian Chardonnay. The nose has white flowers, soft citrus, and nice minerality. It smells so crisp and vibrant, and the palate delivers on those promises. It's chalky, has zippy acidity, is laser-focused, and has quite a long finish. Gorgeous. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2016 Robert Oatley "Signature" Chardonnay Margaret River]( [2016 Robert Oatley "Signature" Chardonnay Margaret River]( ($16.99) 90 points James Halliday: "From Wilyabrup, Karridale and Cowaramup, largely tank-fermented, no mlf, 20% new French oak. Bright straw-green; abundant flavour, primarily stone fruit. Plenty to chew on, and ready now." (11/2018) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 20% new oak used to mature the 2016 Chardonnay is scarcely noticeable, as the nose instead reveals attractive hints of white peach and tangerine. It's medium-bodied, with a hint of creaminess on the palate; but with no malolactic fermentation, it turns a bit tart on the quick-fading, citrusy finish. (JC)" (12/2017) Wine Enthusiast: "Aromatic in style, this veers on the side of perfume on the nose. Nevertheless, it's very likable. Red apple skins and florals lead on the palate that's a little soapy, but is well balanced and stylish. More red apple lingers on the finish. Drink now-2020. (CP)" (12/2017) --------------------------------------------------------------- [2017 Raul Perez "Ultreia St-Jacques" Mencía Bierzo]( [2017 Raul Perez "Ultreia St-Jacques" Mencía Bierzo]( ($17.99) 93 points Decanter: "A field blend of Mencia, Alicante Bouschet, Pan y Carne and some white varieties, fermented with natural yeast in old oak tanks using 100% stems and no temperature control. It undergoes malo in tank and then spends one year in old barrels. There's no remontage or pigeage, and he works without sulphites. This has bright, fresh blueberry and cranberry fruit with a rasp of tannin and a savoury, saline sign-off. Drinking Window 2020 - 2024 (SJE)" (02/2019) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The clean, floral and 2017 Ultreia Saint Jacques comes mostly from old vineyards from different soils in Valtuille and Villadecanes fermented in stainless steel and oak vats with part of full clusters and matured in used barriques for one year. It's produced in a fresh and very drinkable way. This is one of the best values from Bierzo and Spain, and a great introduction to Bierzo. It's a more serious wine than what the wine was when it was first produced, fresh and elegant. It's very reliable and a great value. (LG)" (02/2019) [kirkw.jpg]( Walker]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 03, 2019 Wow! There is a whole lot of wine here. Raul Perez is one of the most esteemed winemakers in the region. His knowledge of the vineyards in the region gives him access to lots of old vine fruit and his minimal intervention winemaking still lets all that fruit shine through. This is not the flashiest introduction to Bierzos wines, but it could be the deepest and the purest. Lots of dark fruit tones underpinned with subtle herbal and spice notes. You can say it is built either like Loire Valley Cabernet Franc or Pinot, whichever you like best. But it does have softer tannins, fresh acid, bright savory fruit, and intrigue. This is a ridiculously good bottle of wine for less than $20. [kajstromer.jpg]( Stromer]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 05, 2019 Raul Perez is a rock star in Bierzo and this wine is a testament to his fame. A bold, new-wave of Spanish winemakers has lifted Bierzo out of the back woods obscurity to international prominence on the success of the Mencia grape. It does not surprise me at all to see consumer demand growing all the time. The Mencia grape offers all the charm of Pinot Noir meets Syrah sort of. It has that silky polish of Pinot Noir, but with the bold fruit of Syrah. I'm a big fan of this wine and it looks like the critics are as well. Another tremendous value from Spain. [gregstclair.gif]( St. Clair]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: May 28, 2019 My previous experiences with Mencia Bierzo had always been filled with over-ripe and sweetish wines... I really was not looking forward to tasting this, but WOW was I surprised. The nose of this wine is filled with complex fruit, earth, and spices, not enough to list separately, but as one they are wonderful. This wine shows incredible depth, spine, and layers of character. This is a superb wine for the price. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2017 Julien Schaal "Schoenenbourg Gypse" Riesling Grand Cru Alsace]( [2017 Julien Schaal "Schoenenbourg Gypse" Riesling Grand Cru Alsace]( ($19.99) 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "A lovely, very fresh and zesty notion of the palest lemon appears on the nose. That same lemon notion gets far more pronounced on the palate and expands with its measured freshness across the textured palate. There is something smooth and bright yet utterly enlivening on the concentrated core. The finish is dry and gives a serene sense of lemony refreshment. Drink now through 2038. (AK)" (11/2018) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Alsace Grand Cru Schoenenbourg Riesling 'Gypse' is very clear, bright and deep on the complex and mineral nose that represents a coolish, reductive character. Full-bodied and large yet very fine and highly elegant on the palate, this is a pure and persistently salty Riesling with great finesse and remarkable length. It has just a kiss of sweetness, which is perfectly balanced. This is a long-distance runner with a very long and promising finish. A great wine from the steepest part of one of the greatest terroirs in Alsace, this interpretation is all about finesse and pure salinity. It is less powerful and rich than the Rosacker but a very fine Riesling from gypsum soils. (SR)" (10/2018) 91 points Wine Spectator: "This creamy, light- to medium-bodied white shows lovely integration, weaving vibrant acidity and a streak of salinity with a broad mix of pink grapefruit granita, verbena and Thai basil flavors. Drink now through 2027. (AN)" (12/2018) [alexp.gif]( Pross]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: April 26, 2019 Out of all of the 2017 Schaal Rieslings the "Schoenenbourg Gypse" Riesling Grand Cru is my favorite. The balance between petrol, saline, and flinty-ness with intense orchard fruit flavors is spectacular. There is so much energy in this wine it almost crackles on your palate. The nose is enticing, the palate is lively and the finish deftly lingers as each flavor echoes then slowly fades away like waves crashing and retreating from the shoreline. To be able to get an Alsatian wine of this quality for under $20 is a no-brainer buy as it gets! [lilia-mcintosh.jpg]( McIntosh]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: April 27, 2019 This perhaps the loveliest Riesling from all that Julien Schaal has to offer. Rich and deep in flavor, dry, mineral, combining lovely freshness and crisp acidity with bright orchard fruit, hints of honey and meadow flowers. It's such a multidimensional and complex wine that it keeps changing and opening up in the glass continuously. I consider this a special treat to be able to enjoy such high quality Riesling from one of the most prized vineyards in Alsace at such low cost! Do not miss this opportunity. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2015 Gloria, St-Julien]( [2015 Gloria, St-Julien]( ($49.99) 94 points James Suckling: "What a gorgeous and supple young wine with ultra-fine tannins and vivid acidity. Medium to full body and direct and driven tannins. Shows such beauty. Better in 2020 but already beautiful." (02/2018) 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "One of two classed-growth estates in Saint-Julien owned by the descendants of Henri Martin, this estate has been renovated and the results show in this well-crafted wine. Ripe tannins are balanced by smoky blackberry fruits and pure, clean acidity. Drink the wine from 2024. (RV)" (02/2018) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Well-steeped plum, fig and boysenberry fruit is richly layered, supported by embedded brambly grip and backed by waves of ganache and sweet tobacco on the finish. This has plenty of energy to carry it in the cellar while it rounds into form. *Top Wines of 2018* (JM)" (03/2018) 92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that saw 40% new oak, the 2015 Château Gloria is a beautiful Saint-Julien thats well worth seeking out and drinking. Blackcurrants, damp earth, spicy oak and hints of leafy herbs all flow to an upfront, elegant, yet fruit forward 2015 that has sweet tannin and good freshness. Its no doubt a charmer, yet will see its 20th birthday in fine form. Tasted twice." Deep purple-colored, with a thrilling bouquet of crème de cassis, toasted spice, graphite, and dried tobacco, this beauty hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, building yet sweet tannins, flawless balance, and a finish that goes on for over a minute. This is a tour de force in Bordeaux blends from Washington State that I wish every reader could taste. Its already accessible, with a sexy, flamboyant personality, yet its going to keep for two decades given its balance and purity. Drink through 2034." (04/2019) [nealfischer.jpg]( Fischer]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 07, 2019 This is my favorite release from the Wines of Substance lineup. As Bordeaux blends go, this is impressive. It begins with a great spicy nose, gets more earthy, then displays pretty and subtle notes of cranberry and blackberry. The elegant fruit characteristics continue onto the palate, joined by leather and then toasted baking spices. The mouthfeel is satiny, and the wine gently fades into a drying, long finish. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2010 Launois "Spécial Club" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne (750ml - ships as 1.5L)]( [2010 Launois "Spécial Club" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne (750ml - ships as 1.5L)]( ($59.99) Without a doubt, this is one of the best Champagnes we carry at any price. Made from two plots of 65-year-old vines, one in the grand cru of Oger called "Chenys" and one in Mesnil called "Derriere Maison," this is among the ultimate expressions of Chardonnay that we have to offer. The wine shows the richness of the 2010 harvest perfectly with great ripeness but balanced by the scintillating acidity of the pure belemnita chalk. Add in the richness and complexity from old massal-selected, Grand Cru, mid-slope sites and you have a must-buy for any Champagne lover! Because of the shape of this 750ml bottle, it must ship in a magnum box. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer) [muriel-sarik.jpg]( Sarik]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: December 06, 2018 There are not many Champagnes that I wait in anticipation for, but the Special Clubs do it for me! The Launois is a favorite and this one did not disappoint. The anticipation was worth it. The nose is enticing and almost heady. The fruit just explodes in the mouth, then the acid and mineral steps in and the finish lasts for extremely long time. I especially enjoyed the lingering aftertaste. This is a gotta have it!!! [ralphsands.gif]( Sands]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: December 04, 2018 Wow! Just Fantastic! Deep, strong old-vine fruit on the nose that lead to an explosive entry of mouthwatering Chardonnay fruit on the palate. Champagne like this will spoil you forever! --------------------------------------------------------------- [2016 Tenuta Sette Ponti "Oreno" Toscana]( [2016 Tenuta Sette Ponti "Oreno" Toscana]( ($74.99) 99 points James Suckling: "Gorgeous floral and deep, dark berry aromas with hints of spices such as cinnamon and hazelnuts. Full body and ultra-fine and strong tannins that are powerful yet so sleek and beautiful. Fantastic length and texture. Deep, dark and profound. Takes you on a long journey and shows you its true character. Better in 2025. Give it time." (05/2018) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Merlot (50%), Cabernet Sauvignon (40%) and Petit Verdot (10%) are assembled with precision and balance. The 2016 Oreno is a fantastic expression from Tuscany that blossoms with each swirl and tilt of the glass. This is a full-bodied red with generous aromas of black fruit, spice, tobacco and soft spice. The wine rests in new French barrique for 18 months. Some 45,000 bottles were produced. (ML)" (05/2019) 94 points Vinous: "The 2016 Oreno is gorgeous. Rich, unctuous and resonant, the 2016 is laced with inky blue/purplish fruit, bittersweet chocolate, spice, lavender, licorice and incense. I would prefer to give the 2016 a few years to come into its own, but it is impressive, even in the early going. Silky tannins and dense, plush fruit add to its undeniable immediacy and sheer appeal. (AG)" (03/2019) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Focused, dripping with black cherry and blueberry fruit, accented by leather, spice and earth notes. This is broad-shouldered and supple, with sweet fruit and a solid structure converging on the finish. (BS)" (10/2018) [gregstclair.gif]( St. Clair]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 05, 2019 The nose is this wine is profound. I've had it several times now over the course of years but it has gone from an effusively, if not ebullient fruity wine in its primary years, to more focused, savory, and complex. The nose has layers of earth, spice, and density, and while it has lots of fruit underneath it doesn't smell new worldish. On the palate, the wine has density, ultra-fine tannins that show an exquisite balance between suppleness and muscle. The upfront Merlot gives texture to balance out the Cabernet Sauvignon's structure and the Petit Verdot with a bit of muscle and color. Long, long powerful finish—a wine of tremendous aging potential, truly outstanding. [johndowning.gif]( Downing]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 11, 2019 2016 is one of the finest Orenos and among the best of Italy's Bordeaux style reds. It showcases deep and rich fruit that possesses an international flair combined with unmistakable Tuscan flavors and character. Although it's quite accessible now, it's sure to improve with time in the cellar. Steak with this one! [ryanmoses.jpg]( Moses]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 05, 2019 Oreno has been a favorite of mine back to the 2006 when it started to get acclaim that matched its much more expensive peers. When it is on point, it is one of the most rewarding reds you'll find, and although this leaves a lot for the 2016 to live up to, it does so effortlessly. The aromas are subtle, with a gentle floral note and pure red fruits. The palate is compact and focused, one of the great signatures of the vintage, with a streak of acidity that lifts the flavors of black cherry and wild strawberry. 2016 Oreno is very polished and composed, a bit less forward than some recent vintages, but perhaps better for it. A great vintage of Oreno, this deserves a long decant now if you can't resist giving it a whirl, but it will be best with a few years in the cellar, drinking well for the next 10 to 20 years. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2004 Old Pulteney 13 Year Old "K&L Exclusive" Single Cask No. 231 Cask Strength Highland Single Malt Whisky 750ml (ships as 1.5L)]( [2004 Old Pulteney 13 Year Old "K&L Exclusive" Single Cask No. 231 Cask Strength Highland Single Malt Whisky 750ml (ships as 1.5L)]( ($109.99) This exceptional cask from the gorgeous little distillery in Wick is the first we've ever had directly from Old Pulteney. Distilled in late 2004 and filled into and ex-bourbon barrel, the whisky was bottled at the end of last year without any dilution or filtration of any kind. Old Pulteney, despite wining nurmerous accolades, remains one of Scotland's great unsung heros in the Highlands. Built in 1826, it was not easily accesible until much later. Barley would have been shipped in on fishing vessels and whisky shipped out. While Wick was once known for their herring, it's claim to fame is this wonderful malt that was once the most northerly distillery on mainland Scotland. The Pulteney Distillery has an extremely unusual lyne that slop sharply down into the condenser. The spirit is full bodied and packed with flavor and nearly 14 years in the cold damp warehouse near the distillery has given this whisky tons of oceany character. These nose is intense combo of rich toffee, vanilla, purple stone fruits and aged wood. The palate tingle with salty maltiness, seville orange peel, bold orchard fruit and salted dark cocoa. Creamy and textured building toward a long spice driven finish. [David-otheningirard.jpg]( Othenin-Girard]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: May 23, 2019 Old Pulteney is one of those under the radar distilleries that the geeks hate to talk about. No one was happy when Jim Murray named their now discontinued 21-year-old Whisky of the Year and rightfully so as it's become nearly impossible to acquire at the original price. Despite the awards and good will from the cognoscenti, Pulteney has remained a background player in the single malt world. Current owners, ThaiBev, however are looking to establish the Old distillery in the very north of Scotland in its rightful place as one of the highlands most well regarded malts. Part of that process is changing from the off-year expressions to the more familiar age offerings (12, 18, 25), but also by launching seemingly secret single barrel program. Only a handful of shops have jumped on the opportunity to own a cask strength single barrel from the odd little distillery in Wick. We've been lucky enough to be one of them. As with many Pulteney, the nose is pure salt, malt, herbal tea and cardamom. The palate is deep with the roasted cocoa, fudge, touches of anise, fennel and vanilla. But of course, with water this thing erupts. Now on the nose the ripest Bartlett pears - smashed, lemon peel, Mirabelle, dried apricot, salted butter on toast. The anise moving much more toward mint and fennel flavors and a long creamy texture is pointed with cotton candy, lemon oils and the tiniest hints of diesel smoke. Staunchly pleasing due to its exceptional purity and straight forwardness. The in [jacksonlee.jpg]( Lee]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: May 21, 2019 Nosing this and I immediately recognized the danger. I immediately was reminded of Sierra Mist soda, pears and dried, candied ginger. Sipping it and the spirit was full bodied, and surprisingly silky given its age; notes of candied pears and spiced caramel apples dominated while there was just a slight hint of pencil shavings. The finish was a bit quick but pleasant as spiced pears and oak rounded this dram out. If not careful, this bottle could disappear in a hurry. [jeffreyjones.gif]( Jones]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: May 17, 2019 This is an elegant and easy to enjoy single malt that should please a lot of people.
