This is bar none one of the finest values we've offered this year. At over 60% off its standard retail price, the 2016 Payten & Jones "Valley Vignerons" Pinot is a sizzling hot deal and a great bottle of wine to boot. Normally, you could expect to pay upwards of $20 for this Yarra Valley stunner, but here we have it for a fraction of that. If you are on the hunt for an everyday house pour, this 2016 fits the bill perfectly. Behn Payten spent a number of years working as a winemaker at Punt Road, even working on some of the Dalwhinnie wines that we import to K&L, and his partner Troy Jones works in sales while managing time over at Four Pillars, one of the best gin distilleries in the world. Together they make up the formidable team of Payten & Jones, a duo out of Healesville making small production wines from their own estate vineyard and neighboring sites. Behn's dad Peter, a viticulturist and consultant in the Yarra Valley, also helps with the project, working to source additional fruit beyond the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay sites on Behn's property. Having worked at Botobolar in the early eighties, Peter Payten had an early role in organic farming in the Yarra. Botobolar was the first organic vineyard in all of Australia when it was founded in the seventies, and his experience there has proved valuable to those producers who continue to move away from pesticides and other chemicals. As a result, all of the wines from P&J come from sustainably-farmed vineyards and showcase some of the Yarra Valley's purest fruit sources. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2013 Château Peyros Madiran Vieilles Vignes (Previously $17)]( [2013 Château Peyros Madiran Vieilles Vignes (Previously $17)]( Price: Hidden A collectible, age-worthy French red for well under the $20 mark is practically unheard of, but that is precisely what you'll find with this highly evolved, deeply complex red from Madiran. Known for its bold and brooding character, this 2013 is an ideal pick now that fall and winter are upon us. You can pop the cork now or cellar for another 20-plus years. Either way you'll be delighted with this old-vine blockbuster. 93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Vines up to 50-years-old are the basis of this rich and tannic wine. While it does have some age, it still has a way to go. Big bold tannins show strongly along with ripe black-plum skins. The wood aging has given this wine a smooth elegant edge that contrasts with the still young fruitiness. Drink from 2021. (RV)" (07/2017) K&L Notes: Chateau Peyros is a 17th century estate situated in the southern part of Madiran. In 1999, Jean Jacques Lesgourgues bought the estate and began the process of modernizing and revitalizing this historic property. Peyros, which means "stony place," sits atop soils of clay and limestone but the vineyards themselves are covered in the large rolled stones (galets roules) left after the last ice age. The 20 hectares of the estate are farmed sustainably, utilizing organic treatments while a herd of sheep walk around the property from May through October grazing the grasses between the rows of the vines and creating manure for enriching the soil. The Vieilles Vignes is a blend of 80% Tannat and 20% Cabernet Franc with an average vine age between 40-50 years. The wine spends about 12 months in oak barrels (about 40% new) before it is bottled. This is no shy Madiran. It is full of the power and texture that one associates with the region. With some decanting it is absolutely appropriate with rich dishes of sausage, duck confit and rustic pâtés. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2015 Le Cleméntin du Pape Clément, Pessac-Léognan (Previously $35)]( [2015 Le Cleméntin du Pape Clément, Pessac-Léognan (Previously $35)]( Price: Hidden This tantalizing 2015 is the second wine of the famed Bordeaux property of Pape Clément. Like so many of the other 2015s, this sleekly styled red offers impeccable balance and precision along with a classic Pessac-Léognan profile. It is drinking beautifully now and has the potential to develop quite nicely over the next 10-15 years. So whether you are looking for a bottle to enjoy now, or for something to store away for a few years, this 2015 is an ideal candidate. With our special discounted price, a case purchase is the smart play. 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Le Clementin du Pape Clement is medium garnet-purple colored with a warm plums, mulberries and earth-scented nose with a touch of dried herbs. Medium-bodied and firm with good tension and grip, it finishes long and fruity. (LPB)" (02/2018) --------------------------------------------------------------- [2015 Melville "Estate" Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay (Previously $30)]( [2015 Melville "Estate" Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay (Previously $30)]( Price: Hidden Melville continues to be one of the most exciting projects out of California's Central Coast. Of particular note are their stellar Chardonnays, which are consistently benchmarks for the region. This sumptuous 2015 is firing on all cylinders and is among the sharpest buys in Chardonnay we have going. A mélange of orchard and tropical fruits grace the palate and are joined by wonderful accents of fresh herbs and exotic spice. Anyone who enjoys a classically-styled California Chardonnay is going to fall head-over-heels for this masterfully crafted white. Whether you sip it on its own or pair with a meal, you'll be more than pleased. 90 points Vinous: "The 2015 Chardonnay Estate (Sta. Rita Hills) is supple and inviting, two qualities that make it an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next few years. Dried pear, herb, lemon peel and dried flowers add nuance throughout.
