Full body, round and velvety tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Fruit-forward style." (05/2017) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The volume of the winery corresponds to the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, which in some countries is also labeled as "Reserva" but is the same wine. This is a light, ruby-colored style that, according to Ghislain de Gondolfier, has exactly the taste they want, with a light earthy touch and a little more austere than the majority of new world Cabernet Sauvignon. Of course, this wine had always had the input of Paul Pontallier from Bordeaux. What I like here is that this has very good freshness and a kind of brightness of fruit, red rather than black. It's soft and balanced, with very fine tannins. In reality this contains some 10% Syrah, which adds length and mouthfeel. You can bite into it. Affordable, elegant and powerful. It's very good. (LG)" (04/2017) K&L Notes: A partnership between a few famous Bordelais with deep expertise in winery management, Aquitania references the historic southwestern French region of Aquitaine, whose history ties closely to that of of wine and - in particular, Bordeaux. Bruno Prats (famous for his management of Cos d'Estournel), Paul Pontellier (Pontet-Canet) and Ghislaine Gondolfier (Champagne Bollinger) have joined forces here in a prime Cabernet growing region of Chile, creating this lovely, French influenced wine. [kirkw.jpg]( Walker]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: February 28, 2018 Alto Maipo might be the bridge that connects the structure, presence and poise of left bank of Bordeaux to the ripe and pure fruit of the West coast of the Americas. I can smell and taste that connection, I will let the physcist try to explain how this particular is made and maintained, (and don't cop out with Bordeaux train French enologist and that the vineyards are in Chile, that is not fun and too easy!) This has ripe high-toned red Cabernet fruit, think Pauillac or Spring Mountain, and a savory mountain scrub/herbal note. The wine is dry, French dry not CA dry with a slight edginess to the tannins but with a nice finish for red fruit and dusty earthy tannins. This is dinner wine, not a cocktail wine, and it requires 30 mins or more in a decanter to really open up and show you what it is all about. A good wine, a great bridge from the new world to the old. [joemanekin.gif]( Manekin]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: February 06, 2018 Alto Maipo, the highly coveted portion of Chile's most important Cabernet growing region, is generally a source of fruit for Cabs that retail for upwards of $30, often times going for multiples of that price point. There is definitely something to be said for the alluvial, gravelly soil and relatively higher elevation that this sub-zone is famous for; it makes wonderful Cabernet. The Aquitania has delicious fruit expression, though what stands out most for me are actually the aromatics, red fruited and rather subtly leafy, with hints of black currant as well. Coupled with an elegant and persistent palate, this is what well made Cabernet based wine is all about. [Stefanie-Juelsgaard.jpg]( Juelsgaard]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: February 20, 2018 I find this wine to be a great middle ground between the richer, softer Cabs of California and the savory, structured ones of Bordeaux. The bright fruit notes really stand out in this Cabernet and the accompaniment of some herbal and gravely notes balance it out beautifully. It doesn't exhibit too much heft, instead tending toward the easy drinking, juicy red fruit style. Super tasty and an easy choice for the price. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2015 de Chantegrive Rouge, Graves]( [2015 de Chantegrive Rouge, Graves]( ($17.99) 92 points James Suckling: "This shows plenty of brash woodwork on the nose with an undercurrent of cassis and blackcurrant. The palate has an assertive core of fresh, lithe and long tannins forming a focused, flavor-drenched finish. Try from 2022." (02/2018) 91 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2015 Château de Chantegrive is another killer value in 2015 and is based on equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Loaded with notions of caramelized cherries, tobacco, truffle, and a hint of earth, this beauty hits the palate with a ripe, sexy, opulent style carrying polished tannin and plenty of length. Drink it anytime over the coming decade." (11/2017) [clydebeffa.gif]( Beffa Jr.]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: April 25, 2018 An absolute steal for Bordeaux lovers. The essence of 2015 Bordeaux from the graves-Pessac regions. Plenty of spicy fruit and blackberry on the nose. Mineral undertones. Very sweet and sexy on the palate. Plenty of structure and latent tannins for the cellar, but so good now after decanting a bit. Perfect for your Steak and claret night. [stevebearden.gif]( Bearden]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: May 17, 2018 This is on the lusher side of what you expect from Graves but with classic, gravely aromas of fecund earth, dark cherries, black currants and tobacco. The rich and smooth middle plays into a somewhat raspy finish of mineral and firm but ripe tannins that beg for a quick decant and some hearty food. [jeffgarneau.gif]( Garneau]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: April 25, 2018 A substantial Chantegrive that positively flaunts the strength and character of this spectacular 2015 vintage. Loads of ripe fruit and toasty oak (50% new) framed by firm tannins. A terrific value from one of the best properties in the Graves region. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2016 Hahn "SLH" Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir]( [2016 Hahn "SLH" Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir]( ($18.95) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Ripe cherry fruit is cut by touches of rust and turned soil on the inviting nose of this bottling. The mouthfeel is thick and grippy, carrying rounded berry flavors, a hint of baking spice and some dried thyme on the back end. (MK)" (06/2018) K&L Notes: Hahn selects fruit from four individual Santa Lucia Highlands vineyards for their SLH bottling, which represents a fantastic value for this highly regarded AVA. A cool spring season in the greater Monterey area in 2016 set small clusters of tiny Pinot Noir berries which led to particularly concentrated flavors. The wine was aged in 1/3 new French oak for 11 months before the winemaker selected barrels for inclusion in this bottling that properly represent the Santa Lucia Highlands terroir. Hahn describes the wine with "aromas of bright red cherry and strawberry with hints of earth, spices and toasty oak. An explosion of red fruit including strawberry, cherry and raspberry welcome the palate, finishing with refined tannins and a soft mouthfeel." By the by, the suggested retail price on this wine is $30... --------------------------------------------------------------- [2016 Kalinda Bourgogne Blanc]( [2016 Kalinda Bourgogne Blanc]( ($19.99) For decades now, our Kalinda private label has been providing K&L customers with awesome wines at a fraction of what they'd normally pay under the producers' mainstay labels. 2016 was such a short vintage in Burgundy that many producers had to source new fruit just to fill the barrels. The good news is the quality of the 2016 vintage was spectacular, so the fruit they purchased was exceptional in most cases. This is exactly what happened to Jacque Bavard, one of our favorite producers in Burgundy, and the reason we can offer our first Bourgogne Blanc under our Kalinda Label. [treybeffa.gif]( Beffa]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 11, 2018 Jacques Bavard has always made one of my favorite Bourgogne Blanc's. When we visited him last March, we were super excited to learn that there was the possibility of doing our private Kalinda Label with him. This is a typical example of the wonderful 2016 vintage in the region. It shows terrific freshness, bright acidity and finesse, whiles still having a fair amount of richness and body. Just in time, this is perfect to pair with lighter dishes or just enjoy as a summertime sipper! [heathervanderwall.gif]( Vander Wall]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: August 06, 2018 This wine is made by one of my personal favorite producers in Burgundy. I can't tell you who makes it, but suffice to say it has a lot of Puligny-Montrachet quality to it. I think this is absolutely one of the best deals we have in white Burgundy currently. Its lean and mineral with classic flint notes, but with a nice lees-y texture and plenty of creamy lemon curd on the finish. It's pretty phenomenal that we were able to work with this producer to bottle a Kalinda Bourgogne, and I hope you enjoy the results as much as I am. [joemanekin.gif]( Manekin]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 10, 2018 A lovely nose of yellow fruits, accented by erxtremely subtle hints of spearmint and a rounded, leesy quality, leads to a palate where the real magic begins to happen. Brightly fruited, with excellent acidity aligned with a mouth filling, satiny texture, this should be your new house white, as our own Jim Barr's oenophile dogs used to enthusiastically exclaim. As the back label states, this wine is produced and blended specifically for us by one of the more talented, super tiny, ex Paris restaurateurs currently working in the biz in Burgundy. Highly recommended. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2016 Oakridge Estate "Willowlake Vineyard" Chardonnay Yarra Valley]( [2016 Oakridge Estate "Willowlake Vineyard" Chardonnay Yarra Valley]( ($19.99) 97 points James Halliday: "From the Upper Yarra, Hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed direct to French puncheons for wild fermentation followed by 10 months maturation. The Willow Lake Vineyard is the oldest in the Upper Yarra, and one of the oldest in the entire Valley. This wine has a vibrancy, an edge, giving it a mouthfeel and set of flavours firmly anchored on grapefruit, which the Barkala Ridge doesn't have. Great success for the vintage." (04/2018) K&L Notes: 95 points Wine Front: "Stunning Chardonnay off the Willowlake Vineyard at Gladysvale in the Yarra Valley. I shouldn’t lead with this statement because it belittles the wine in a way, but this is remarkable value. This is top level Chardonnay, styled beautifully, at a relative snip of a price. We all should make hay while we can. It’s all flint and white peach, meal and mineral, the impression both neat and wild at once. Nut, grapefruit and spice notes are nominated throughout the wine and while it generally feels slender in the mouth, it’s not wanting, and it surges impressively through the finish. A beautiful wine." [Stefanie-Juelsgaard.jpg]( Juelsgaard]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 17, 2018 The Yarra Valley continues to shine with its cool climate wines and this Chardonnay is no exception. Coming from the Upper Yarra, in the coolest part of the valley, this single-vineyard Chardonnay displays great depth, with a broad palette and an incredibly long finish. The Willowlake vineyard is one of the oldest in the area, originally planted in 1981, and the great concentration of fruit is evident of how developed those vines have become. In Napa, vines of this age would have been grafted over 3-4 times by now. There is more acidity here than I expected when first tasting this wine, which I was so excited about, because I knew this wine would be a powerhouse for years to come. It's nearly impossible to find an under $20 Chardonnay of this caliber with these high critical reviews. Don't miss this one! [joemanekin.gif]( Manekin]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 17, 2018 This one is for hip-hop fans: if Burgundy keeps on making it and California keeps on taking it, then Australia is creating it. In other words, if Burgundy is the origin, and California the sales and marketing muscle, then Australia is the present and the future in terms of what's exciting right now in Chardonnay (for fans of BDP, I will not call anyone out as "faking it," at least not in this forum..) We were all stoked on this bright, focused Chardonnay from nearly 40 year old vines, the oldest in Yarra Valley. Expressive fruit and perfectly balanced acidity are the hallmarks of this bottling from Oakridge. Recommended! [ryanmoses.jpg]( Moses]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 09, 2018 Oakridge is one of K&L's most rewarding direct-import properties and their 2016 Willowlake Chardonnay speaks volumes to that fact. It is simply delicious Chardonnay that will leave most sub-$20 whites in envy. Plentiful stonefruit pairs with bright citrus, a great white stone minerality, a terrific texture, and good depth. It is a light-to-medium body Chardonnay that shows depth but retains a sense of elegance at the same time. Nearly impossible to resist (especially in screwcap), it should be stocked up for anybody looking for a go to white this summer, or the next 3-6 years to follow. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2015 Martin Ray Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon]( [2015 Martin Ray Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon]( ($25.99) 91 points James Suckling: "Aromas of currants, crushed stones, cedar, hazelnuts, and hints of ripe berries. Full body, round and soft tannins and a juicy finish. Chewy and rich. A little old-school. Drink or hold." (05/2018) K&L Notes: The name Martin Ray resonates deeply in the history of California Winemaking. Martin Ray was a pioneer, dedicated to crafting single varietal, region specific wine from 1943 through 1972 in Saratoga, and developed what is now one of the most historical properties in California. Nearly twenty years later, Courtney Benham purchased the brand, and has been committed to the production of artisanal wines worthy of the Martin Ray name. The wine is sourced heavily from Coombsville and Rutherford with carefully selected pieces from some of their most revered premium Napa Vineyard sites. The overall crop was lighter than usual resulting in outstanding quality fruit. Aged for 16 months in 50% new French oak barrels. If you want outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon, you go to Napa Valley. The famed valley and its surrounding mountains and hillsides are the source for their Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons. Key vineyard sites on Diamond Mountain (Constant and Andrew Geoffrey) and the Stags Leap District AVA are the source for this classically styled wine. [kajstromer.jpg]( Stromer]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 04, 2018 The Martin Ray winery has been turning out some of the best-value, high-quality California wines every vintage. This particular Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a great example. By sourcing from select vineyard sites throughout Napa Valley, theyre able to craft amazingly delicious Cabernet that have all the hallmarks of much more expensive wines. The fruit for this bottling comes from various valley floor vineyard sites as well as some choice hillside selections on Diamond Mountain. Ive long been a fan of the Martin Ray wines. My first introduction was the 1997 vintage Saratoga Cuvée which turned out to be one of the best selling Cabernets of the year. The quality, price, and value were without peer. The 2014 vintage was one of our top selling Cabernets of last year. The 2015 is its worthy successor. The wine possesses all that dark cassis, black berry, and floral notes youd expect from wines costing well above $50. Layers of ripe Mulberry, wild violets and spice are framed by well-structured tannins and just a dusting of French oak. [gregstclair.gif]( St. Clair]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 10, 2018 Nose is full of a melange of cocoa powder, cassis and very ripe plums highlighted with some barrel spice. This wine reminds me stylistically of Caymus, it has that weight, ripeness and sweetness of fruit that is their hallmark, the Martin Ray perhaps doesn't have quite the weight but it's $40 cheaper! On the palate the richly textured fruit rolls across your tongue leaving a wake of chocolaty cassis. The finish is clean but highlights the toasty sweetness. Have with a plate of BBQ'ed ribs! [keithmabry.gif]( Mabry]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 26, 2018 Oozing with juicy blackcurrant and blueberry fruit, the Martin Ray is a truly satisfying rendition of a Napa Valley Cabernet. It lands firmly on the side of modern but never quite goes over-the-top and retains its regional character. Fleshy and warm fruit compote on the palate and a sweet lingering finish lead me to one of my favorite drink now styles. It has the advantage of accessibility and drinks like many other Napa Cabs that would be priced twice as much. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2014 La Chablisienne Chablis 1er Cru "Côte de Léchet"]( [2014 La Chablisienne Chablis 1er Cru "Côte de Léchet"]( ($27.99) 95 points Decanter: "Flowers with a bit of lemon curd on the nose, giving way to a lively palate with white flowers, herbs and a fine-grained mineral seam running through to the racy, spicy finish." (07/2017) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine comes from one of the coolest Premier Cru vineyards, giving it an initial austerity that then fills out as the wine breathes. It's crisp and bright with white fruit and intense, lemony acidity. Age it for a few more months and drink from 2018. (RV)" (06/2017) [alexp.gif]( Pross]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 13, 2018 This wine offers up a ton of rich citrus fruit, minerality and subtle spice notes with an underlying power that slowly unfurls as the wine comes to life in the glass. A rich and powerful Chablis that has impressive intensity of fruit and minerality. [ryanmoses.jpg]( Moses]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 31, 2018 If I'm looking for a bottle of refined, over-performing, old-world Chardonnay at K&L, the first thing I check is to see if we have any Chablisienne left, specifically the 2014s. Coming from one of the world's great value producers, this co-op seems to over-deliver year-to-year and deserves its best-seller status. Case in point is their 2014 "Côte de Léchet." Slightly up the road from Vaillons and Montmains, it is a bit more under the radar, but delivers in spades in this famed vintage. Focused citrus and bright red apple on the nose leads to an impeccably balanced and seamless palate that reflects the citrus notes and pairs with stone fruit and a subtle minerality. It also carries an impressively seamless texture, something that I adore in great bottlings from Chablisienne. For my tastes, it'll be hard to find a better bottle of Chardonnay in the store for this price, but I expect this parcel won't last long. [garynorton.jpg]( Norton]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 31, 2018 Showing great drive and precision, this is textbook Chablis from one of the strongest vintages for white Burgundy in recent memory. Green apple, lemon peel, stony minerality and a flash of baking spice on the finish. There aren't many '14s available in the market right now and even fewer with a price-tag under $30, which makes this a unique opportunity to stock-up on top vintage Chablis for a song. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2012 Louise Brison Brut Champagne]( [2012 Louise Brison Brut Champagne]( ($34.99) This Champagne was made in the most expensive way possible. The entire Brison estate is organic, and the wine is entirely barrel fermented. No detail is forgotten in making the vintage wines here, as the owner, Delphine Brulez is a diploma of oenology. Only because of a direct buy are we able to offer a Champagne like this at such a fair price! For those of you who have Brison vintage in the past, we think this is the best one they have ever made... Even better than the 2008! - Gary Westby [gary.gif]( Westby]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 03, 2018 The 2012 is undoubtedly the best Champagne yet from Louise Brison. Delphine Brulez works hard in the vineyard, doing everything the old fashioned, organic hard way, and then continues in the cellar. All the wines are barrel fermented, and the main production, just like in Burgundy, is vintage dated. Sadly, upcoming vintages will be short for this great producer, as the Aube has been very hard hit with hail and spring frost, making for tiny harvests. This is a Champagne with great subtlety and depth, with hints of nut bread and fine cream on the nose, ripe cherry fruit and good citric zip in the mouth and a super long mineral finish. It is a super star. [kajstromer.jpg]( Stromer]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 03, 2018 This bottling is my first introduction to the wines of Louise Brison and I can now see how they fit into our Champagne program. Stylistically the wines go straight down the middle. They are neither that crisp, taught, nervy style nor are they over-the-top yeasty, bread dough, and brioche. Instead, this champagne is more classically vinous in style highlighting the fruit aspect of the wine. A refreshing change of pace. Equal split between Chardonnay and Pinot Noir give this wine great balance and complexity. [scottbeckerley.gif]( Beckerley]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 03, 2018 This perennial customer favorite is back! I can honestly say that the 2012 version of the vintage Brut is my favorite, so far. A classic blend of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir, the 2012 strikes just the right balance between fruit and acidity. It still carries that classic Brison golden apple and creme caramel character but, also has a long finish with minerals, spice and white stone fruits. It also retains a "just right" oakiness....not too much and not too little. One thing that has not changed is a affordability! Once again, one of our "best buy" champagnes! --------------------------------------------------------------- [2015 Felsina "Fontalloro" Toscana]( [2015 Felsina "Fontalloro" Toscana]( ($49.99) 94-95 points James Suckling: " Very attractive plum, apple and cherry character. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh and long finish." (10/2016) 92-95 points Vinous: "Another impressive 2015, the Fontalloro is a wine of breadth, power and persistence. Today, the oak is still not fully integrated, but there is more than enough depth and resonance in the fruit to make me think that will happen. I can't wait to taste the 2015 from bottle. (AG)" (01/2018) [gregstclair.gif]( St. Clair]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 31, 2018 Im sure I dont have to tell you about how spectacular the 2015 vintage is in Tuscany but Im going to try and go over it once again, its really freakin great. Felsinas Fontalloro is a 100% Sangiovese from vineyards that stretch across Chianti Classicos southern border. The nose is savory, this is no fruit bomb it is full of smoke, porcini, Tuscan dust and an umami like salted plum character. On the palate this wine is broad, supple and luscious it just flows across your tongue silky smooth. The flavors fill in a bit more and you find plum interspersed with wild cherry touches of leather and earth fills out the array. The finish is full bodied, you can feel the highly polished, sweet tannins but theyre just background noise alluding to future longevity but they dont actually distract from you from thinking of drinking it now, long, very well balanced with just a bit of youthful richness. An exceptional wine. [johndowning.gif]( Downing]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: August 13, 2018 For Felsina, Fontalloro represents their finest expression of Sangiovese. It's great even in the weakest of vintages which makes their 2015 a real show stopper. Although this exceptional Tuscan red has loads of fruit and can be appreciated today, it is sure to blossom with ample cellaring. Definitely one of the best Tuscan buys of the 2015 vintage. [ryanmoses.jpg]( Moses]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 31, 2018 Fontalloro is one of those wines that ages beautifully but carries a price-point that makes it all-too-easy to pull the cork. One of the world's great Sangioveses, and one of the top Super Tuscans for the money, it is a joy in great vintages like 2015. It starts of with exceptional aromatics that are highlighted by extremely focused and bright red fruits and hints of baking spices. Lined with explosive acidity, the palate is fresh with layers of tart red fruits and plentiful, but very fine tannin. There's great purity here from start to finish. Very tightly wound, there is tons of potential here but it is already flat-out delicious. Give it a nice long decant if drinking young, or hold for five years before drinking over the following 10-15. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2015 Domaine Gourt de Mautens Vaucluse Rouge]( [2015 Domaine Gourt de Mautens Vaucluse Rouge]( ($54.99) 97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The Chambolle-Musigny of the Rhône, the 2015 IGP Vaucluse from Jerome Bressy is a totally sensational blend of 50% Grenache and the balance a mix of Mourvèdre, Carignan, Counoise, Vaccarèse, Cinsault, Syrah, and Terret Noir (we're getting close to all the varieties). Aged in a mix of concrete tanks, foudre, demi-muids, and barrels, bottled unfined and unfiltered, this naked beauty has just about everything you could want from a bottle of wine. Notes of rose petals, kirsch, blackberries, garrigue, and spice all emerge from this pure, elegant and gorgeous red that offers full-bodied richness, no hard edges and a killer finish. It got more than a few Wows in my notes and is an ethereally textured southern Rhône that needs to be tasted to be believed." (10/2017) [alexp.gif]( Pross]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 23, 2018 What a seductive nose on this beauty! Straight from the glass aromas of crushed geranium, allspice, clove, minced meat and dark berry accents all whaff from the very first swirl. This is one sexy wine that deftly combines gorgeous fruit with garrigue notes while being impeccable balance as well as a perfect synthesis of old and new world styles. This is a flat-out delicious wine. [jamesbradshaw.jpg]( Bradshaw]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: August 02, 2018 Like a great thriller, this gorgeous 2015 takes you on a wild ride with countless twists and turns, culminating in a long, lingering, and immensely satisfying finish. Densely packed with black and red fruits, it could easily be mistaken for a top-tier Châteauneuf (think: Pégaü, Usseglio, or Clos des Papes). High-toned, expressive, and accented with exotic spice it reveals flavors of clove, mint, eucalyptus, and bramble. All of its many parts work in perfect unison. There's ample body and structure for serious long-term aging, but who can wait?! This Vaucluse is a such a delight to drink now, it is impossible to resist. While the price may seem a bit hefty for this lesser known appellation, rest assured it is worth every penny. Pick up a few bottles for now and a few more for ten to fifteen years down the road you'll be glad you did. --------------------------------------------------------------- There are now several K&L email lists, where wine enthusiasts like yourself can sign up for categories that interest you.
