The best recipes? Those passed along from family and friends. Sunday Recipe Inspiration with PJ Batc

The best recipes? Those passed along from family and friends. [logo]( Sunday Recipe Inspiration with PJ Batch 440 [Berry Blitz Torte]( Today, May 1, is my mom's birthday. A food lover for as long as I can remember, part of the legacy she left me is an abundance of family recipes shared over the course of the 50 years we baked together — often apart geographically, but always one in spirit. Mom's dessert recipes had a definite Midwestern bent, springing as they did from her Norwegian-American community in Wisconsin's farm country. Flour, butter, sugar, eggs — those were the cornerstones. Spices and nuts, fruit and berries (and chocolate, of course) took her cakes, cookies, and pastries from simple to sublime. Julia Child once said of those jealously guarding their "secret" recipes, "If you don't want to share your recipes, don't write them down." Mom wrote down all her recipes and was happy to share with anyone who ever smiled over a serving of her favorite birthday cake, Berry Blitz Torte. The following recipes are some she handed (literally) to me — and now, virtually, to you. That famous [Berry Blitz Torte](? It's a magical combination of thin yellow cake topped with crunchy almond-studded meringue and filled with pastry cream and berries. The delicious sum is so much more than its simple parts. Add birthday candles and sing. [Almond Puff Loaf]( is Danish pastry without the heavy lifting. A tender pie crust base is topped with a mound of cream puff batter, the whole baked into an aromatic cloud of buttery pastry finished with homemade jam, toasted nuts, and a simple vanilla-almond glaze. Serve it first thing in the morning with OJ — or last thing at night with coffee. My favorite birthday cake growing up? This simple [dark chocolate sheet cake]( topped with a thick layer of remarkably fudgy [cocoa]( frosting. Tip: Pour the hot cooked frosting atop the cake immediately, before it turns to actual fudge in your saucepan! Craig Claiborne's light-as-air "Dutch baby" pancake recipe appeared in the New York Times over 50 years ago; once my mom discovered it, she made this [Lemon Puff Pancake]( at least once a week. After a shower of fresh-squeezed lemon juice, Mom added a blizzard of confectioners' sugar. Fresh berries take it over the top. Finally, in honor of Mom's birthday, let's turn to her own mother's favorite celebration cake, [Norwegian Sour Cream Cake](. Baked in a Bundt pan (the original [classic shape](), butter and eggs bring out the golden hue of this sturdy, dairy-rich cake. And flavor? A slight tang of sour cream set against the uncomplicated pleasure of [vanilla](. You'll wish you had more birthdays to celebrate. Here's to the joy of sharing recipes with those you love.
