TOP STORY [What’s the true cost of generative AI search innovation?]( Last week, Arc, a web browser from startup The Browser Company, released a new AI-powered feature called pinch-to-summarize, which provides an instant summary of full web pages. That follows Arc’s release of “Arc Search,” a mobile app that will search the internet based on a user’s query and deliver an AI-generated page summarizing the breadth of information it searched. It’s not the only AI tool targeting search. Perplexity is seeing increased attention for its ability to summarize data sets, including searching in Reddit posts or YouTube videos. This month also saw the rebranding of Google’s Bard chatbot to Gemini as the company doubles down on AI search. All of these innovations purport to make searching easier, but at what cost? [Keep reading]( NEWS AND VIEWS [Amazon could swing at Google with its own post-cookie solution]( Our view: Amazon will not be exempt from the same stringent privacy standards that are forcing Google’s hand, but if it can offer an identity solution that is viewed as more fleshed out than Privacy Sandbox, it can wedge its way into addressing a crucial function for online advertising. [Biden issues executive order to protect personal data]( Our view: The executive order asks the Department of Justice to prevent personal data in the US from being transferred to “countries of concern,” which include China, Cuba, Iran, Russia, North Korea, and Venezuela. Until the DOJ implements a policy, the executive order is just something to be aware of for advertisers. [Apple will ‘break new ground’ in generative AI this year, Tim Cook teases]( Our view: If Apple implements new AI features in an iOS update, the change could be huge for generatie AI adoption, as iPhone users will start using the tools by default. ANALYSIS [Social media is still a hub for news and politics]( Despite the platforms’ efforts to distance themselves from news and political content, social media remains a major source of information about politics and current events. It’s also a focal point for discussions on hot-button topics like the election, and an important political marketing channel. Over half of US consumers get news from social platforms. While most people aren’t necessarily going to social media for news, 50% of users got news at least sometimes from social, per an October 2023 Pew Research Center survey. And according to a March 2023 Kagan survey, no age group does this more than adult Gen Zers. Not all news on social media is inherently political, but the line between news, politics, and entertainment is now blurred.
