The original poster shared that her team of three content marketers reports to the creative director who leads the design team. As a result, she wrote, “… we are caught in execution mode and fighting to prove our value from the dark reaches of the org without actual CM leadership.” Some in the Slack group shared that they work on teams that report to the CMO (or equivalent title). Some said they report to a communications lead. But back to the OP’s question: “Any advice on how to move our team to a more strategic and marketing-focused center of the org?” Robert Rose wrote about which [team content marketing should report to]( late last year. His take: “It doesn’t matter what you believe the definitions, roles, or processes should be if the other parts of the organization don’t know, believe, or care.” In other words, it’s an organizational decision that might be out of your hands. Still, you’ll have more luck opening and influencing the conversation if you establish an “accountability framework,” Robert says. That will help you create “a language of content that everybody in your business understands.” Once people understand what you do, how long it takes, and what it can do for the business, they’ll be much more willing to talk with you.
