We need to take action, our future is on the line Dear friends, This week, the U.S. Senate began debate on the Freedom To Vote: John R. Lewis Act, which the House passed last week. This is an essential voting rights bill that will protect our democracy for the future. This legislation honors and fulfills the life’s work of my friend Congressman John Lewis by expanding how voters can access the ballot box, offering more options for voter ID requirements, restoring federal preclearance of overly restrictive state laws, banning partisan gerrymandering, protecting local elections officials, and more. To put it simply: this is the most important legislation we can pass if we hope to keep American democracy on the right track. There are two Democratic Senators that are currently unwilling to adjust the filibuster rules to pass this item. While their stance is unfortunate, it’s important to remember that there are FIFTY Republican Senators who are entirely unwilling to protect voting rights. Protecting our democracy should not be partisan, but Republicans are more worried about keeping power by any means necessary. [If we hope to protect voting rights and work towards a brighter future, we just need to win more elections in the House and Senate.
