We need to do more Dear friends, Today is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and although we honor his memory today, we should constantly recognize the ways that Dr. King reshaped our nation for the better. As I march in the parade honoring Dr. King today, I am mindful of the work we still have to do. While Dr. King’s message can be summarized by “a call for equality,” he stood for so much more. We can only have equality if we have equity of opportunity. We can only create opportunities for everyone - regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, and zip code - if we identify and address the ways that our systems needs to work for all. At the core of many of these issues is fair representation in government, and unfortunately, voting rights face brazen attacks at the local, state, and national levels. Last week, President Biden called to waive the filibuster so that the Senate can pass an absolutely essential voting rights bill, and this is necessary if we hope to protect and elevate the voices of disenfranchised Americans. [We cannot possibly have equality while many people are discouraged or prevented from participating in our democracy. If you agree, please click here to sign our petition calling for the U.S. Senate to take action!]( The best way that we can celebrate and respect Dr. King is by fighting for legislation that will protect voting rights and create opportunities for all Americans, and I’m committed to that cause. Today’s holiday aims to honor Dr. King’s life, but tomorrow, let’s work to honor Dr. King’s vision.
