My friend Senator Andrew Zwicker (D-NJ-LD16), is at the forefront of this fight in his top-targeted re-election campaign for New Jersey State Senate. Recently, he was on CNN This Morning discussing his new legislation to combat Republican book bans across his district, the state, and across the country. He's running against Republican Mike Pappas who, if elected this fall, will fall in lock step with the extremist views of Republican elected officials across this country. These extremist efforts to ban books aren’t just happening in states like Florida and Texas. We’re seeing them led by well-organized groups everywhere, including New Jersey. That’s why Senator Zwicker's bill to prevent censorship of any book in a public library is so impactful. The right to read is sacred, and Senator Zwicker refuses to let extremism and partisan politics infringe on our basic rights as parents. [Andrew spoke about the impact of his bill on CNN This Morning. In case you missed it, click here to watch this important conversation.]( Andrew is running with my friend Assemblyman Roy Freiman (D-NJ-LD16) and my former District Director Mitchelle Drulis - who many of you know. State Legislatures are the frontline of political activity right now. There is no such thing as an “off year” for civic engagement, and certainly not for defending basic democratic principles. [Senator Zwicker, Assemblyman Freiman, and Mitchelle Drulis need our help to continue fighting against extremism in their district. Warmly, Tom --------------------------------------------------------------- Districts for Democracy will work one school board, legislative, and congressional district at a time to recruit and support candidates committed to freedom of inquiry, thought, and speech for everyone. We want to keep the culture wars out of our schools, return school board elections to their nonpartisan roots, and keep our schools and universities focused on their central mission: helping our kids become educated and engaged citizens of these United States.
