Unconventional tips from publishing insiders Happy summer! Firstly I hope you're well - I managed to

Unconventional tips from publishing insiders [View in browser](=.OG_pUSpzOjY7BN5S4vq1im286TnDKGYM_M3PFOBp4Ms) Happy summer! Firstly I hope you're well - I managed to visit family for the first time in 3 years and even hit a dozen waterfalls in Oregon... am settling back into some projects now and nearly forgot to share this [authoring summit.](=.k3981IIJk7QKoyNOyclSM9rhj7PRx1jwcnZyHTQSCb0)You've probably seen these before, with a lot of the same so-called publishing experts. But since I rarely talk to anyone, I end up gushing and filling my interview with a massive dump of newly discovered information, material and marketing secrets, so it's worth a watch. =.E0WvxgQYUaWvswf48J8FqUlHZcSpGmh26PdCzERX4-k Years ago I wrote an article about how new authors are "fools" (in it for the love and passion; optimistic about future success; blinded by magic). Experienced authors are "magicians" (jaded and practical, with an understanding of the craft). This week I've seen posts from famous, trad-published authors looking for part-time gigs... and I've seen posts from brand new authors confident they'll easily sell 500,000 copies and get rich and famous. It's not hard, if you get it right... Publishing books is daunting; I've released 25 books in 5 years and have around 5000 positive reviews... and I'm still barely breaking even. But it's a little like restoring an old boat. There's a lot of work to do and most of the time, you sink... until you don't. I *hope* adding just 1 more book to each series and finishing boxsets will push me into profit, so I can scale my ads and suddenly, miracles are possible (an absolute lifestyle change, which includes a cabin in the mountains and a dozen feral cats). But the closer I get, the more I procrastinate. I got absolutely obsessed with some side projects this year, just as I was about to cross the finish line. Your first book, everything feels critical and important, but the more you write, the more you learn that rest is necessary and the creative brain can't always be running on full steam. Online publishing summits and conferences help get some of that enthusiasm and energy back, which is why I continue to share them. It's an easy way to stay motivated and connect with the publishing community. The biggest advantage of being a fool is unmerited optimism, but it comes at a price (usually crushing disappointment when reality sets in). I'm not asking you to lower your expectations - but staying aware and learning what you can *now* will save you a ton of panic and overwhelm later. So if you're serious about publishing a successful, profitable book... come [watch the interviews](=.7OlChUUxLHTsaVMzqc86Lk4g6vkow98KnDuWNAv3kvg) and take notes: you'll learn a lot of new stuff and probably hear a lot of stuff you're heard before (sometimes it takes a few times to click or sink in).
