Dealing with fear, uncertainty & doubt (FUD) [View in browser]( Fear is normal. Courage is a mask. Recently I sent an email about getting feedback on your writing. But it came up again, as I see more and more writers asking questions like "when should I just give up" or "how do I know if my writing is good enough." So I turned it into a blog post and added a new section:["How to deal with doubts and insecurities.](" This is important stuff, so it's worth reading and digging through all the supplementary links. Here's a quick excerpt: "Be aware that it is normal to get drained, overwhelmed, and demotivated. Youâre draining your brainpower doing something very hard. Itâs dumb to feel guilty about not being able to keep up the constant motivation or enthusiasm." Itâs normal to go between âIâm a genius!â and âthis sucks Iâm terrible!â You can help, a little, by focusing on [productivity habits or creativity supplements]( to make sure youâre resting and refueling. But itâs also important, just to recognize and accept that this is part of the work. Thereâs nothing âwrongâ with you. Thereâs no âfixingâ it. Creative Confidence I also posted a section of my introduction to BookCraft on the [2 types of creative fear and 3 orders of wretchedness](. The ideas came from a 19th century treatise on solitude and years as a struggling artist - I kind of got distracted for the past 10 years but the point of my platform was to help creative people be more successful, and I feel I may finally be starting to put things together well enough to share. For now, I set up [a free course called "paid to create"]( - where I'll be sifting through/publishing some of my research soon before maybe collecting it into a new book. It's never too late If you're feeling discouraged, I wrote a detailed response to the question, "Is it too late to publish?" which you may find motivating. Or more specifically... what if you've tried everything and nothing is working, is this even worth it, maybe I should quit? [Is it too late to publish your book?]( Here's a note I got recently: "I am very thankful to you for all of the wonderful things that you taught to a 73 year old guy who isnât done learning yet. If you would have ever told my high school English teacher that I would be writing novels she would have laughed you out of the room. I hope this cheers you up. You didnât do all that you did for nothing. It did not fall onto deaf ears." Need some help? Finally, I wrote a long post about [working with writing coaches](. You can tell I'm (still) uncomfortable with the whole idea, but I also understand that external feedback, accountability and even group interaction can be a huge motivator, while also alleviating a lot of the overwhelm and pressure of trying to figure everything out on your own. In a couple days, I'll be doing a webinar with Wall Street Journal bestseller Joe Bunting, who's one of the few people I'd trust for this kind of work. We'll be talking about the necessary framework for writing successful stories, for movies or books. You can download his free [Write Structure worksheet here](.

But I tend to procrastinate and then produce a flurry of related content and ship it out, before falling asleep for days. I don't mind being ineffective, because I know my content is helping people. But also, I'm going to delete half my list this week (finally) so this is like a message in a bottle from a sinking ship. I hope it lands in good hands.
