UPDATED: BTE Candidate Roster [BTE Logo]( Hey {NAME}! It’s only the first quarter, and this midterm election year is shaping up to be one for the books — we’ve already had some historic victories, as well as some tough losses. And now, the fight must go on. That’s why we’re so excited to share our 2022 Primary Election candidate roster and introduce to you the newest members of the BTE endorsement slate! Take a look at this line up and read more about each candidate below! [March 2022 New BTE Slate Photo]( Jamie McLeod-Skinner (for Oregon - Congressional District 5): Oregon’s 5th District has just been newly drawn, so really there’s no incumbent. But technically, it’s a guy named Kurt Schrader — a corporate Democrat who claims to be for working families but has sold his constituents out to Big Pharma and Big Oil over his 27 years in office. Jamie isn’t taking a dime from corporate money. She’s already got major endorsements and even national coverage on her side. She comes from a working-class background, and if elected would become Oregon’s first out LGBTQ+ member of Congress. Shaquana Boykin (for New York - District Leader 57): As a child of the foster care system, Shaquana knows firsthand how difficult it can be for young people to access the resources they need to thrive. Shaquana has dedicated her life to connecting youth to opportunities and showing them how civic engagement can help them advocate for themselves. Born and raised in Brooklyn in Crown Heights, Shaquana currently organizes a network of other young District Leaders to imagine a party that listens to the people and has started to build that future today. She is seeking re-election for District Leader 57 to keep fighting for her friends and neighbors. Kimi Cole (for Nevada - Lieutenant Governor): As a lifelong Nevadan, Kimi has lived in her state since the 1950s, and there’s no place she’d rather call home. She’s a retired construction manager and former small business owner who understands many of the universal struggles that working-class families face, and she’s committed to bridging the divide between rural and urban communities. As a proven unifier and solutions-based leader, her campaign message is simple: You Belong. If elected, Kimi would become the first-ever transgender statewide elected official! Victoria Virasingh (for Virginia - Congressional District 8): The daughter of immigrants, Victoria grew up housing insecure and watched her working parents struggle to pull their family out of poverty. With an entrepreneurial and engineering background, Vicki has the experience and skillset to bring fresh leadership to her district. She’s running for Congress to create equitable opportunities for those who have been left behind — from the local store owner to the refugee. Angelina Jackson (for Ohio - Montgomery County Commons Pleas Judge): Angelina has been a practicing attorney for 17 years. Formerly with Dinsmore & Shohl, Angelina also served as Director of the Race & Justice Project at the Ohio Justice and Policy Center, where she litigated civil rights cases and advocated for criminal justice reform. Currently, as a public defender, Angelina represents people who cannot afford an attorney in the municipal, common pleas, and appellate courts of Montgomery County. The US judicial system is fraught with racial and economic barriers. Angelina gets that, and she will be ready to address these issues head-on from her seat on the bench. Daniel Ortiz (for Ohio - State House District 43): Like many people in Toledo, Daniel works full time in the local healthcare system, often juggling multiple jobs. He is a nationally certified pharmacy technician (CPhT) and has worked in the pharmaceutical industry for over 10 years. Daniel has worked in pharmacies in hospitals, retail, and long-term acute care. Previously, Daniel worked as a Precinct Election Official for the Lucas County Board of Elections in the 2020 General Election. The following year, he ran for Toledo City Council while working full time and without any institutional help or support. Although he came up short, it was an incredible learning experience and opportunity to meet so many amazing new friends and community leaders. He finished just a few hundred votes shy of advancing in the September Primary as a newcomer— which only further motivated him to continue fighting for progressive values. Daniel is running for State House because he loves all that Toledo has to offer, and he wants to make his city even greater and more equitable for all who live there. Joe Thompson (for California — State Assembly District 28): At only 18 years old, Joe has already worked on several campaigns and has tons of political work experience under their belt. They’re a self proclaimed “policy geek” who is gay and nonbinary. The only true progressive in this race, Joe has experienced the obstacles that so many face when trying to get by — from our lacking education system to our broken healthcare system. Having grown up struggling with food and housing insecurity, they understand the struggle that the average American goes through just to make ends meet, let alone succeed. Joe has made headlines as a Starbucks Workers United labor union pioneer and plans to continue their work in empowering working-class people. Congresswoman Donna Edwards (for Maryland - Congressional District 4): Raising her son as a single working mom, Donna faced a tough choice - to get health insurance for him, she had to go without it for herself. As luck would have it, an illness resulted in a trip to the emergency room for herself that left her with thousands of dollars of medical debt, and she almost lost their home as a result. As a former member of Congress, that’s why she was an original co-sponsor of Medicare for All. We are proud to stand by Donna because we know she will use her seniority to lead the fight to pass it when she returns to Congress.
