Your gift can give hope to refugees [View in Browser]( [Amnesty International candle logo]( [MAKE A 5X MATCHED GIFT TODAY TO HELP REFUGEES & DISPLACED PEOPLE »]( [YOUR GIFT NOW GOES 5X AS FAR]( A school that has been adapted into a shelter for displaced people in Mykolaiv, Ukraine. 80% of the residents of the shelter are older people, and many have disabilities. © Amnesty International {NAME}, is it cold where you are? When the weather turns cold every year, most of us turn up the heat, curl up under a blanket, or cook a hot comforting meal. Sometimes, I take these things for granted. But today, I’m reminded that not everyone is safe from the cold of the winter season. For refugees and displaced people, winter is a threat. Cold winds slice through thin tents, rain falls into damaged buildings, food is scarce and heat is even harder to come by. Nothing is easy when you’ve been forced from your home. [During the final two days of the year, when our fundraising is most important, I’m asking — will you help our efforts by making a 5X matched gift right now? Every $1 you give will turn into $5 to help protect the human rights of displaced people and refugees around the world.]( It’s been nearly two years since Russia’s full-scale invasion in Ukraine. Nearly 7 million people have been internally displaced. Some have been away from home for 22 months. Many have likely had to flee more than once. Under constant threat of attack, and often without enough food, water, electricity or heat, their goal is to survive. Now, months of below-freezing weather make survival even more difficult. This is especially difficult for older people with disabilities. They require support to move about, eat or wash. Staff at temporary shelters in Ukraine are already overwhelmed. One told Amnesty, “One family who came here had a grandmother, she could barely walk up the stairs at the front of the building… "I understood this is a person who requires care. But we aren’t a nursing home, we don’t have care workers… So we had to turn her away.”1 Every day, Amnesty advocates for the protection of civilians impacted by armed conflict. Because conflict often takes its biggest toll on the most vulnerable. Whether that’s older people and people with disabilities in Ukraine, a struggling family deported from Pakistan back to Afghanistan, or children orphaned in Gaza — their rights must be protected. [There isn’t much time left to take advantage of this special 5X MATCH opportunity. Before it’s gone, please consider making your first Amnesty gift to help protect refugees and displaced people. Give now »]( Your gift today isn’t just financial. It’s a gesture of kindness for people who may feel like hope is running out. It sends goodwill to those who are seeing the worst of humanity – showing them that there are people out there who still care. [Make your 5X gift]( We couldn’t do this without you. Thank you.
