…because we’ve got some to share! [View in Browser]( [Amnesty International candle logo]( Hi {NAME}, Let’s be honest: in a world where far too many governments, corporations, and leaders refuse to respect our human rights, it can feel like we’re fighting an ever-uphill battle. It’s okay — I feel it, too. But we are making progress. The work that all of us do, together, is having a positive and measurable impact on the lives of people across the world. Today, we want to share some updates that your support has made possible:   [VICTORY: PALESTINIAN HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST RELEASED](     Munther Amira, a Palestinian human rights defender and social worker, was arbitrarily detained by Israeli forces without charges or trial over alleged Facebook posts. Here’s what Munther shared with our team after his release: “When I was told by my lawyer in Ofer prison that Amnesty International was planning to campaign on my case, it gave me so much strength — I felt that I was not alone, that I haven’t been forgotten.” We’re also campaigning on behalf of two Palestinian journalists who are in Israeli custody, Haitham and Nidal. They’re being held under conditions that constitute enforced disappearance, a crime under international law. [Without charges, they must be released now — take action today!]( [ADD YOUR NAME](   [SAME-SEX MARRIAGE PROGRESS IN THAILAND](     The Thai parliament's lower house just passed a bill that paves the way for legalizing same-sex marriage! The bill now needs approval from the Senate and the Constitutional Court before it can be passed into law.   [GOOD NEWS: FIREARM BACKGROUND CHECKS EXPANDED](     This month, President Biden moved to expand requirements to background checks for those who buy firearms at gun shows or online. We commend President Biden for going beyond thoughts and prayers and taking another step towards curbing the human rights crisis of gun violence in the U.S. [GO DEEPER]( [Are you liking your Amnesty Impact overview? Let us know!]( [Thumbs Up]( [Thumbs Down]( [SUDAN: ONE YEAR INTO CRISIS](     Right now, families in Sudan are living a brutal, waking nightmare: It all started with heavy fighting between two military forces one year ago, and it has spiraled out of control. More than 14,000 people have been killed and 10.7 million are displaced — making it the largest internal displacement crisis on earth. Thanks to support from you, we are meeting with leaders in Congress and the Biden administration. We’re [publishing research]( that documents violations of international human rights and humanitarian laws. We’re [holding the international community accountable](. And our researchers are connecting with human rights defenders in Sudan to support their needs. Unless the international community steps up, the Sudanese people will be trapped in a never-ending crisis. Our letter to President Biden lays out EXACTLY how the U.S. can take action… [sign onto it today.]( [ACT NOW](   [JOIN US: VIRTUAL EVENT](     Join us for our World Press Freedom Day event next Thursday, May 2nd. "Voices Amidst Conflict: Protecting Journalists," will shed light on the importance of journalism and freedom of expression amidst escalating conflicts and global crises. We will feature journalists covering Ukraine, Mexico, and Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, who will share their insights and experiences on the frontlines of press freedom. See you there! [RSVP](   {NAME}, you are an important part of our movement of 10 million strong. We’ve learned a lot over our long history, and one lesson I try to remind myself of is that our campaigning takes time — but if we are united, it works. So take a moment. Take a deep breath, step away from your computer or phone. While there is clearly more to be done to protect human rights, when we act together in unison, we can achieve so much.
