We need to drive tens of thousands of messages >> [View in Browser]( {NAME}: tomorrow is the Biden administration’s deadline for accepting public feedback on its newly proposed asylum ban. If implemented, this policy would target the most vulnerable families and people (including children and babies) exercising their human right to seek safety in the U.S. We cannot go back to the inhumanity and abuses of this Trump-era ban. We need to drive tens of thousands of messages to the White House — this critical comment window closes on March 27, so [take one minute to add your voice here.]( [Act Now]( Thank you, — Amy From: Amy for Amnesty Sent: Friday, March 10, 2023 Subject: ❗ BREAKING ❗We must block family detention [Amnesty International candle logo]( [Stop Biden From Banning Asylum & Locking Up Families »]( This is urgent, {NAME}: In a major step backward for human rights, President Biden plans to reinstate cruel and inhumane Trump-era immigration policies. [We need you to help stop them.]( According to The New York Times1, the Biden administration is considering reviving the appalling practice of family detention. This alarming news comes immediately after the administration announced an asylum ban2, making it nearly impossible to seek asylum at the border. These policies target the most vulnerable families and people, including children, exercising their human right to seek safety in the United States. [Act Now]( I’m reeling from this horrific news, and you better believe [we’re mounting a massive campaign to stop it — with letters from people like you]( a rally at the White House, mobilizing members of Congress, getting media attention, and more. As a dedicated Amnesty supporter, you know why family detention — locking families in cages — is harmful and morally reprehensible. With your help, Amnesty has spent years documenting a long and disturbing record of abuses and mistreatment in U.S. immigration detention facilities, and together, we have successfully campaigned to end family detention. President Biden himself campaigned to end its cruelty! In December 2021 the Biden administration stopped detaining families. We must now remind him of something he once stood behind: Family detention is inhumane. If enough of us speak out, Biden will know that the public is not behind him, and that we support asylum-seeking families. [Please send your letter to the White House right now — it’s so easy and so important.]( [Do not allow the U.S. to abandon human rights yet again. Do not allow President Biden to bring back family detention and a Trump-era asylum ban.]( [We must stop the cruel policy of family detention]( [Take Action Now]( {NAME}, it’s hard to believe this is even under discussion right now. Amid a global refugee crisis, the Biden administration is embracing racist, xenophobic, and deadly policies that aim to make the exercise of seeking asylum so painful that individuals and families just give up. These policies are beyond cruel — and they are unconstitutional. We absolutely cannot go back to the inhumanity and abuses of Trump-era policies. We must call on the Biden administration to shut down family detention centers, restore the asylum system, and invest in community based welcome. All people who come to the U.S. seeking safety must have their human rights respected. Help us flood the White House with strong opposition to these latest moves. [People and families are counting on us and we need to act urgently — click here to send your letter to the White House ASAP to stop these harmful acts.]( In solidarity, Amy Fischer Advocacy Director, Americas Amnesty International USA P.S. If we don’t convince Biden to change course and respect the human right to seek asylum, he will cause direct and lasting harm to families and children fleeing horrors and danger. [We need you — and your friends and family — to voice your opposition. Send your letter now, and forward this email.]( Thank you!
