End censorship, not lives [View in Browser]( [Amnesty International candle logo]( 1,082 days. That’s how long Alaa Abdel Fattah has been detained without cause. The Egyptian-British national is one of the most important voices for freedom in Egypt. A blogger, activist and prominent figure in the 2011 revolution, Alaa was arrested and convicted on bogus charges of spreading “false news” over his social media posts. Since his arrest, he’s been subjected to a catalog of other human rights violations, including torture, cruel detention conditions, and denial of consular visits. Each year during Banned Books Week, Amnesty International uplifts the voices and stories of people like Alaa who are imprisoned or threatened because of their writing, art, or other published work. Our work — made possible by members like you — can mean the difference between freedom or more years of abuse and detention for Alaa. [{NAME}, will you join us in urging the president of Egypt to immediately release Alaa? The more of us who take action, the stronger our voices and the greater our impact.]( [Alaa Abdel Fattah - Unjustly imprisoned for 1,082 days]( [Take action for Alaa]( In addition to Alaa, we’re also urgently advocating for Sareh, too: Zahra Sedighi-Hamadani, known as Sareh, is a gender nonconforming human rights defender who has just been sentenced to death by Iranian authorities for “corruption on earth”. She’s been held behind bars in an Iranian prison for almost a year, and information obtained by Amnesty indicates that her conviction and sentence are based on discriminatory reasons related to her real or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity, and her peaceful LGBTI rights activism. She has been held in prolonged solitary confinement where guards interrogated and verbally abused her. These actions constitute torture and violate her human rights. [Amnesty International is urgently calling on Iranian authorities to immediately repeal the death sentence and release Zahra Sedighi-Hamadani. Take action now to help save Sareh’s life.]( [Zahra 'Sareh' Sedighi-Hamadani - Sentenced to death for supporting LGBTI rights]( [Take action for Sareh]( We all have the right to say what we think, share information, and demand a better world. But, evidently, not everyone has the ability to practice that right without facing unlawful consequences. [We must act now to change that.]( Thank you for speaking up, Cynthia Gabriel Walsh Director of Human Rights Education Amnesty International USA [DONATE NOW]( © 2022 Amnesty International USA 311 W 43rd Street, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10036 | 1-800-AMNESTY Please don't reply to this email.
