{NAME}, A living nightmare that’s lasted an entire year [View in Browser]( [Amnesty International candle logo]( [Afghanistan Response: We need 250 donors to meet our goal]( [A group of Afghan children]( {NAME}, It’s been nearly one year since the Taliban seized power in Kabul, and life for people in Afghanistan has been nothing short of a nightmare. A nightmare they can’t wake up from — so horrifying, most of us could never imagine it being a reality. But as the headlines move away from Afghanistan and the world forgets, the nightmare continues. Women and girls face horrific gender-based violence. Nearly half of the population — 20 million people — face acute hunger. Amnesty International cannot — and will not — forget. The truth is, we’ve seen a dip in support for Afghanistan. That’s why we’re launching an emergency fundraising campaign — to ensure we have the resources to continue investigating, advocating, and sending financial assistance to human rights defenders at risk. Our goal is for 250 people to donate by August 15th — one year since the Taliban’s takeover. [{NAME}, will you be one of them? Your contribution will make sure Afghans are not forgotten.]( [Act Now]( Will your donation make a difference? Absolutely. In addition to Amnesty’s research and advocacy, our Global Human Rights Relief Program distributes financial assistance to human rights defenders and individuals at-risk in Afghanistan and around the world. Over the years, it has helped pay for legal fees, medical and mental health care, a stolen laptop, or even evacuating people and their families if no other option exists (including last August from Afghanistan). We’ve even used the fund to fly survivors of human rights violations to New York and Geneva so they could testify at the United Nations. In 2021, more than $1 million from the Relief Program was distributed to nearly 5,000 individuals in 62 countries — and Afghanistan continues to be our primary focus: - Even before the Taliban seized control, there were targeted killings of journalists. In some cases, explosives arrived at their houses as package deliveries. We distributed $5,000 to help a prominent journalist and his family cover daily expenses while they got visas to Pakistan. [Help us with this work and more »]( - Women lawyers and judges are in hiding. One lawyer who provided legal services to victims of domestic violence was at risk. We granted $10,400 to support her and her family of eight for six months as they relocated to Pakistan. [There are more Afghans at risk »]( - Despite the risks of arrest and torture, women protesters and human rights defenders are continuing their important work in Afghanistan. We provided $8,400 in relief funds to support one woman who received death threats for her work to bring war criminals to justice. She and her family were able to relocate. [We can only do this work because of supporters like you »]( These are just a few examples of the many ways that dollars are put to work through the Global Human Rights Relief Program. Every donation has a real impact on the lives of people facing unimaginable hardships. [{NAME}, be one of the 250 compassionate people to make a gift by August 15 that will help us continue researching, campaigning, and providing relief for people at risk.]( Thank you for not forgetting the families and others at risk in Afghanistan, Billie Hirsch Senior Director of Online Engagement Amnesty International USA [DONATE NOW]( © 2022 Amnesty International USA 311 W 43rd Street, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10036 | 1-800-AMNESTY Please don't reply to this email.
