We can’t be silenced while our rights are being taken away >> [View in Browser]( [THIS IS NOW A STATE FIGHT — EMAIL YOUR GOVERNOR »]( [Abortion Rights Equal Human Rights]( {NAME}, Access to abortion is a human right. What I mean by that is: each of us is free to exercise our rights to privacy and bodily autonomy. To privately make our own decisions about our reproductive lives — including if and when we have children. But last Friday, the Supreme Court ruled that states now control whether or not we can exercise these rights. The impact this decision will have is utterly heartbreaking: More than half of the country — tens of millions of people in 26 states — will lose access to abortion care either totally or near-totally. That includes 13 states with “trigger bans,” designed to take effect immediately, that will ban abortion within 30 days — as I am writing this email, some have already taken effect. Women, girls, and people who can become pregnant* will be forced to carry pregnancies against their will. I am grieving the loss of our rights. And I know I will be for a long time. It is likely to be decades before abortion is legal and accessible in all 50 states. But {NAME} — we CANNOT give up our fight. Not when so much is at risk. This is now a state fight. There is more each of us can do on a local level to protect abortion access in your state and states across the country. [No matter what state you’re in, send a message to your governor today, encouraging them to protect and expand abortion access.]( [Act Now]( {NAME}, I’ll be honest with you — we knew this moment was coming, and yet, the details within the Supreme Court’s decision were worse than we anticipated. That’s because the logic that the decision uses could be used to overturn other landmark cases in the future — including the right to same-sex marriage, the right to choose your sexual partner, and the right to access contraception. These human rights could be next on the chopping block. We have to act urgently to help reduce suffering and protect access to our human rights. Amnesty International is building political pressure locally and globally — and we need you with us. [Please, take action with me today: urge your governor to protect abortion in your state.]( Whatever state you’re in, your governor MUST hear from you. Our elected leaders need to know there will be major consequences for banning abortion. U.S. governors are a key target, because individual states now determine whether or not abortion access is legal within their borders. That’s why it’s crucial that we make sure governors know this is a human rights issue — and that restricting our human rights will come at a political cost. We know this kind of pressure works: when several states recently tried to pass anti-LGBT legislation in the last year, defenders of human rights spoke out, and governors in Arkansas, New Hampshire, and Utah prevented them from becoming law. [Take Action]( {NAME}, Martin Luther King, Jr., reminded us that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” But {NAME} — it only bends towards justice because WE BEND IT. [So let’s keep up our fight. It may be the fight of our lives.]( I hope you are taking time to process this loss — and that you’re feeling held, even in some small way, by our shared work to fight back. Thank you for helping us take this first step together. Tarah Demant Interim National Director of Programs, Advocacy, and Government Affairs Director, Gender, Sexuality, and Identity Program Amnesty International USA *We do not only say “women and girls” when talking about abortion. Abortion is absolutely an issue for women and girls. Many transgender and non-binary people can get pregnant and have abortions, too — and they can have the hardest time accessing non-discriminatory and gender-appropriate care, including abortion care.
