I have a formula I use for writing blog posts: - Open with a story - Back up the story with data/science - Turn the story into a list of how-to steps/a practical lesson - Give a call to action (next step) This could also work for videos, webinars -- any content really. It's a great formula to engage and teach humans. It's also convinces them to take the next step with you, be that subscribe to your channel, join your newsletter or buy your product or service. However, it has a weakness... Stories don't rank well in Google. The reason is pretty straight forward. Stories don't focus on keywords. Stories engage the creative mind that is a human being, not the analytical code of a search algorithm. Confession: My Blog Is Not What It Once Was In the last few years my blog traffic has decreased significantly. Why? One reason is competition. Another reason is focus. And perhaps the biggest reason is my blog was built on stories, not keywords. When my blog started all I did was tell stories and share thoughts. Then slowly I became a better writer and I narrowed in on a focus. The comptition wasn't as fierce back then, so traffic grew orgranically. For many years my story driven posts drew in search traffic from Google. However, today most of my articles, except a few keyword focused ones, rank far lower. Thus, far less traffic. It's frustrating. I get it though, there are better articles out there, with more focus on specific keywords. Playing The SEO Game Today While my blog dropped traffic, my other business, [InboxDone.com]( has steadily increased in traffic. Why? Because, with help from my team, we've been producing SEO focused content. I've also been working on our Google paid ads. I've learned what keywords matter to our business. Every piece of content we produce is focused on ranking for keywords. Yes we do include stories. We also teach practical steps and have a call to action ([book a call](). BUT, keywords come first. Google rankings come first. As a writer I much prefer to tell stories. I understand though, as a business owner, we need to play the Google game. Write To Engage, Write To Sell, Write To Rank In Google Today, to truly succeed online you (and your team) must know what type of writing works given different media formats. For example... What you publish in a newsletter should engage attention, build trust, then sell. A blog post should rank in Google, engage and get that subscriber or sale. The videos you publish on YouTube should please the algorithm first, get the subscriber second, all to build trust and reach more people. There are overlapping goals with all content. But if you don't know how to do it all, you're going to fail. Can't write great copy -- you don't make sales. Forget about keywords -- no one ever discovers your content. Don't tell stories -- you lose attention and fail to build trust. Today you need to be a hybrid writer, or fill the gaps with a team. I Teach Content Marketing In Blog Mastermind 2.0 When I created Blog Mastermind 2.0, my flagship course, my goal was to teach how to use two content marketing tools: - Your blog - Your email list (newsletter and automatic sequences) The funnel is simple... Blog posts rank in Google, engage, and encourage the next step -- signing up for your email list. The emails that follow-up deliver more content, stories, and ask for the sale. To make the sale, various selling tactics are applied, from scarcity, urgency, to social proof and authority. To describe your product or service, you write about features, benefits and outcomes. There's a lot to cover, which is why Blog Mastermind 2.0 is a 20+ hour program. I'm proud of the course because it shares everything I learned about writing to get customers. I'm still using the same skills with my current business. We'd have zero customers if I never learned how to become a hybrid writer. Blog Mastermind 2.0 Lifetime Access Last year, Blog Mastermind 2.0 (and even the original 1.0 version!) moved into my [Laptop Lifestyle Academy](. The course used to sell on its own for $1997. Now it's included along with all my other best training. You get lifetime access for a one time fee (or break it down into 12 monthly payments). The [Academy]( includes: - Blog Mastermind (2.0 + 1.0) - The Blog Money Finder - Power Podcasting - Emails Revealed - Cash Cow Crash Course - Product Launch Blueprint - Blog Traffic For Beginners - Services Arbitrage - [...and so many more!]( If you're building an online business this year, you must acquire content marketing skills. You can't escape it. Words are what you use to sell with, so you have to start acquiring this skill sooner or later. - [Learn How To Grow Your Audience Sell Your Products & Services And Live The Laptop Lifestyle]( Don't forget, you get lifetime access to Blog Mastermind 2.0 + the Academy.
