As a [coach]( I spend more time helping people with one thing... Positioning. What does that mean? What you sell has a position in a marketplace, an angle, elements that make you different. Your difference is counter to other options that solve the same problem your business solves. In other words, competition. Not just direct competition (same solution), but indirect competition (different solution). For example, to lose weight, you can take a pill, reduce your food intake, or exercise. If you narrow in, exercise can be broken down into cardio, weights, yoga, crossfit and so on. Diet could be keto, slow-carb, fasting, and so on. Each step to narrow in makes what you sell appear more specialized. This reduces the size of the market you appeal to, but that is good. You want to be the most appealing option to a certain segment of people. Why Positioning Is Harder Than It Sounds It's simple to talk about what makes you different. It's hard to commit to a specialization. It's even harder to ensure every piece of content you publish represents that specialization. The magic happens when everything you do reinforces why you are unique and the best option within narrow parameters. From case studies, to your website homepage, your ad copy, the story you share when you give a talk, your client onboarding process, your customer service style, your ability to reject certain clients, or not offer certain products or services -- all of these decisions, and many more, reflect your commitment to a certain positioning. New entrepreneurs struggle with this because they don't have empirical evidence to help guide decision making. You can't commit when you don't know what positioning works. It's easier to know you're in the right lane when customers keep buying from you. From Positioning To Copywriting The other challenge with positioning is to truly sell it, you need copywriting skills. You need the right words. The headline you publish at the top of your website or landing page is a massive statement of positioning. The emails you send in your newsletter are all about positioning. The ads you run on Instagram or Google represent your positioning. You can understand what makes you different, but if you can't translate that into powerful words that sell, you don't get customers. Positioning Statements On Repeat Finally, once your positioning is clear and you have the ability to express it using various content formats, you face one more challenge... You need to repeat it again and again. Your message needs to show up when it matters and more than once. When they search Google, there you are. When they are on social media, there you are. When they listen to a podcast, there you are. When they ask for a referral, there you are. I could keep going, but you understand my point. Success with a business is about Positioning + Attention + Repetition. Be in the right place at the right time for the right person with a message that resonates. Then do it again. Now You Know Why Businesses Fail This is why most business fail. Most people don't understand what positioning is, let alone have all the skills to make it work. So many new entrepreneurs start out with flat, general and broad ideas. "I will help you lose weight." "I can show you how to double your business in two weeks." "I can help you go on more dates." All of these offers sound good. People want these outcomes. The problem is no one trusts you or knows you. You sound like everyone else online. There are other solutions that present a far more credible, specific and tailored solution, so I'm not going to choose you. To make matters worse, most new entrepreneurs are not great at marketing. They might get one shot to get in front of people, and they waste it with a poorly positioned offer. Once that shot is taken, they've blown their marketing budget, or used up that one good contact they had. Game over. This Won't Be You My goal for all my coaching clients and students in the [Laptop Lifestyle Academy]( is to solve these problems with education and mentorship. You will refine your positioning. You will craft the words you use to present this positioning. You will have a marketing plan that is about repeating this positioning enough times to make the sale. It's not easy, but these are learnable skills. How do I know this? Because I had to learn them too. I wasn't born knowing the things I write about in my newsletter. I didn't just get lucky when I built multiple 7-figure companies. All successful entrepreneurs will say the same. At some point they learned these things through experience, training and/or coaching.
