How your business can succeed in incredibly crowded markets. During the last few days I've been thinking deeply about positioning. ...Positioning means to deliver a clear message to your audience so they understand and are drawn to your uniqueness (and thus your business). I remember doing this with my blogging business over a decade ago. It was getting very crowded in my market. Everyone was selling a course on something similar to what I teach. Not to mention all the free videos and podcasts and articles all covering the same topics. I realized, in order to stand out and make sure people chose my course and my content, I needed to become a peacock. I had to be unique and stand out, both by using my personality and content style, and also with what I did that was special. I had to become the only choice for a certain type of person. Fast forward many years later and I was thinking about positioning again with my new business. This time I was selling a service powered by virtual assistants. I wasn't first to market. There were already hundreds, if not thousands of VA companies and millions of freelancers offering services. Yet I had an idea about how to position our offer so it was different and unique. We then became the only choice for a certain type of customer. We became different. We became special. You Have To Understand Yourself, Your Market And How To Position Your Business Unfortunately, most people who start a blog or YouTube channel or podcast or launch any kind of content, coaching or teaching business, tend to begin with a very generic style. This is sad because these people likely have a lot of value to offer the world and could help a lot of people. They end up presenting a basic message, use broad language and fail to connect with any specific group. This is why in my [Blog Mastermind 2.0]( course, I teach concepts like True Empathy. True Empathy means you really empathize with a group of people and the needs and wants they experience. You understand them emotionally and rationally. You know why they behave in certain ways and think in certain patterns. Chances are you have been where they are now. True Empathy is a powerful tool for not just choosing a topic or business idea, it helps you to see how within a market you can position yourself as special. When you dig deep enough, and find this powerful positioning, everything you do with your business will benefit. Positioning Your Products To Increase Sales Also in [Blog Mastermind 2.0]( I give an example of an absolutely critical writing concept. I call this concept: Features + Benefits + Results It's a simple enough idea. When you sell something online you need to appeal to various aspects of your target customer. They like to know what something does (Features), how it will improve their lives (Benefits) and deliver specific changes (Results). When writing to sell anything, you have to cover ALL of these elements. If you don't, your product or service isn't appealing and thus doesn't sell. Positioning guides how you present the features, benefits and results, because they need to speak to what is different about you and what you sell. It's all linked together, and if you don't get clarity and learn these content marketing and sales skills -- well, just like for most people, your business never takes off. Million Dollar Results Come From Caring About The Details A lot of what I am writing about in this email involves nuance. Nuance is difficult to acquire because it takes time, iteration and experimentation to truly discover. This is why if you are going to really commit to refining your positioning and how you sell your products and services, you have to care about the details. You have to put in the effort to write the words and go back out there to the world with your message, carefully adjusting and improving things as you learn more... to begin to grasp the nuance of what works. My course [Blog Mastermind 2.0]( is a great place to start opening your eyes to nuance and to help you craft the right positioning for you and your business. I've loved teaching this course over the past 15 years (two versions of the course), but as I have [written about](, the doors are closing for the final time. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
