Here are the books that we enjoyed reading last month... July 2022 Books of the Month Here's our monthly selection of books that our editorial team has reviewed. Even though we publish digitally, we absolutely love books! [The House with the Golden Door (Wolf Den Trilogy, Volume 2)]( The House with the Golden Door by Elodie Harper is the second in a trilogy, which began with The Wolf Den. It is set in ancient Pompeii and follows the life of Amara, a recently freed woman who was a prostitute at the brothel, or Lupanar of Pompeii. With explicit detail directly influenced by the surviving art and architecture of Pompeii, Harper explores the social complexities and class structure in Pompeii and the greater ancient Roman world. But wait—there’s more! While discussing current consenses on historical issues, Schwartz also gives a helpful primer on the historiography of the period: the lenses and frames with which scholars approach the rough terrain of this historical landscape. In the 20 years since the last edition was released, valuable evidence has come to light which has dramatically enhanced our understanding of the arts of ancient Greece and their influence. This well-written and comprehensive new edition deftly incorporates these insights [Read full review]( [The Real Valkyrie: The Hidden History of Viking Warrior Women]( Nancy Marie Brown's book The Real Valkyrie: The Hidden History of Viking Warrior Women combines textual, historical and archaeological evidence with imaginative fiction that informs the reader all about female warriors and queens in the Viking Age. In 2017, a grave in Birka that was initially assumed to be a male viking warrior was found through DNA testing actually to be a woman. She was buried with weapons and horses, and is the foundation for this in-depth analysis of women in the Viking Age. [Read full review]( [The Story of Egypt: The Civilization that Shaped the World]( In this ambitious book, Professor Joann Fletcher tells the history of Egypt from the earliest evidence of nomadic peoples, through its many dynasties of Pharaohs, up until the annexation of the country by Rome in 31 BCE. Although a thorough overview of this more than 4000-year period, the book lacks any sustained analysis to retain the reader’s attention. Newcomers to the subject may find it useful to establish a linear narrative, but anyone looking for more will be disappointed.
