I met Moughenda in 2013 after a synchronistic series of events drew me to experience the shamanic plant medicine iboga. It’s fascinating to me what happens when you open your eyes to the synchronicities in your life and begin to answer the call to adventure. In 2012, after having journeyed several times with proper traditional Secoya elders of the yagé medicine tradition of South America and writing about these transformative experiences, I received an email from someone I had never met, inviting me to an iboga ceremony. I ignored the email and did not reply. About a year later, the phone rang at my hilltop house in Costa Rica, and a young man introduced himself as someone who worked with Moughenda, and he invited me to visit his retreat center in the Northern part of Costa Rica. I turned him down. Several months later, the phone rang again, and the same young man, persistent indeed, told me more about the medicine iboga and encouraged again me to join him in ceremony. By this time I was beginning to feel curious, although very apprehensive, but I agreed to come to a private house in Guanacaste, Costa Rica for ceremony. After hanging up the phone, I felt uneasy about the location, and called him back the next day to politely decline. The young man told me that while he understood, he had just been informed that the event needed to be cancelled anyhow. Coincidence? A few days later he called back to tell me that the event had been rescheduled for a different location, and asked one more time if I’d be interested in joining him, this time at a biodynamic farm in the La Fortuna area of Costa Rica known as Finca Luna Nueva. Now, this is where the call became too loud to ignore, because for several years I had been visiting Finca Luna Nueva as a respite from my crazy family life, and had gotten to know the owner, the director of farming, and many of the staff members. It was my personal respite, and is one of the most magical places on the planet, located at the Northern edge of the Children’s Eternal Rainforest. Now I knew I had to answer the call. That ceremony was especially difficult for me, and the best way I can describe it was like a deep, dark detox from all of the matrix programming I had been loaded with my entire life. It was both epic and frightening. A year later I was invited to journey with several of Moughenda’s personal students of this amazing African spiritual tradition, which is when I had the great honor of being in a ceremony hosted by Moughenda himself. It was powerfully life-changing for me, and as you'll hear in this episode, Moughenda's simple wisdom about the value and purpose of life is extraordinarily direct, and helped me to see the truth of my own soul. There is a LOT more to this story, but I wanted to share this with you to encourage you to pay attention to the synchronicities in your life to see if there is a call you may be ignoring. Should you perhaps change your perspective and answer this call? Something to think about. Be sure to catch this episode at the link below!
