The House took the historic step of passing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. This bill was named in honor of George Floyd, who unfortunately became one more in the long list of individuals who were victims of police brutality. George’s life mattered. The lives of the thousands of black and brown people we have lost to police brutality mattered. I am committed to eliminating police brutality in its entirety to ensure the safety of black, brown, and underserved communities nationwide. The Justice in Policing act takes bold steps to eradicate police brutality by banning chokeholds, eliminating qualified immunity, and reemphasizes community policy solutions. This act also bans no-knock warrants, prohibits racial, ethnic, and religious profiling practices in policing, and mandates data collection on police interactions. By doing this, we will restore the power with the people, and ensure that officers that violate their oath will be held accountable for their actions. No one should live in fear of those who have sworn to protect and serve. Police brutality is a public health crisis and the sixth leading cause of death for young men, regardless of race. I would be remiss if I did not mention how black and brown communities are policed at higher rates than their white counterparts, exponentially increasing the likelihood individuals of falling victim to police violence. I was proud to vote yes for this bill because I know it’s going to take bold, progressive action to undo the hundreds of years of damage that over-policing has done to our country. No legislation will ever be enough, because no legislation will bring back George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tamir Rice, Sandra Bland, or Kyam Livingston.
