March 2023 Edition Here’s what was on our radar this month: - In what’s becoming all too familiar, we saw more brutal acts of senseless gun violence, including at the Covenant School in Nashville. Guns are the leading cause of death for American children. There have been more mass shootings in 2023 than days of the year. Gun violence has stolen too many futures, robbed too many of their lives, and has destroyed too many communities. Across the country, Vote Mama alumni have introduced legislation to address the critical need for gun safety reform, but we need more of our nation’s leaders to step up. Inaction is a policy choice, and it is a deadly one.
- Trump was indicted on 34 counts of federal crimes such as illegally financing and influencing the presidential campaign. These charges show that nobody, even a former president, is above the law. But we can’t ignore the continued efforts from the far right to undermine our democracy. It’s going to take all us to protect our democracy from election-deniers and extremists who want to overturn it from within. We can’t let our guard down, not even for a second.
- Republicans remain ruthless when it comes to attacks on our reproductive rights. After a federal judge in Texas ruled to invalidate the FDA’s 23-year old approval of the abortion pill Mifepristone a few weeks ago, the Supreme Court is expected to affirm the outlawing of the drug as early as today. Mifepristone, which is currently used in more than half of pregnancy terminations in the U.S., has been a lifeline for those who lost access to abortion procedures following last year’s SCOTUS overturning of Roe v. Wade. This newest ruling is an assault on bodily autonomy that will have even more devastating impacts felt by women across the country. But despite the obstacles and attacks being launched at us from the far-right, there are plenty of opportunities to fight back. It’s more critical than ever that we elect and support pro-choice, Democratic moms who will protect our rights and champion the issues that matter — up and down the ballot. Take a look at what we've been up to this month: --------------------------------------------------------------- IN THE FIGHT FOR EQUALITY: - Black Maternal Health Week took place April 11-17, which recognizes the state of Black maternal health. Among developed nations, the U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate — with Black women facing disproportionately high rates that are 3x higher than their white counterparts. This is one of the many reasons why doula support is so critical as a proven way to combat maternal mortality rates. A doula is a trained professional that provides physical and emotional support before, during, and after childbirth. Doulas understand the physical, social, and emotional impacts of systemic racism and how it impacts maternal health, providing essential care to Black women and moms of color who might otherwise go without that support. Our Chief Program Officer Sarah Hague has been making trips to Albany to work with Vote Mama alum State Senator Samra Brouk who is advocating for groundbreaking legislation that would secure equitable Medicare reimbursement for doulas across New York state.

- Asian American National Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Equal Pay Day was also this month on April 5 — a day that symbolizes how far into the year AANHPI women must work to catch up to what white, non-Hispanic men earned in the previous year. In 2022, AANHPI women workers made an average of 80 cents for every dollar compared to their white, non-Hispanic male counterparts. We've got to close the gender pay gap.
