This March was the first Women’s History Month that we’ve had since the fall of Roe last year, making it a powerful reminder of the urgency of our work to support fearless pro-choice mamas who will defend abortion access across the country. Jenn McClellan, our first endorsed candidate of the year was officially sworn into Congress this month (yay!). And we announced our endorsement of Lashrecse Aird (more on her below). Now, before we head into Q2, here are our tidbits from this past month! --------------------------------------------------------------- CANDIDATE SPOTLIGHT: Meet Lashrecse Aird — our newest 2023 endorsed Vote Mama candidate! [Lashrecse Vote Mama Headshot]( Lashrecse is a mom, higher education professional, and former Virginia Delegate who is now campaigning to represent her community in a highly competitive seat in the Virginia State Senate. Although Democrats currently hold a slim majority, one of those seats is occupied by Joe Morrisey — the ONLY anti-choice Democrat in the VA State Senate. As the youngest woman ever elected to the Virginia House of Delegates, Lashrecse is no stranger to breaking barriers. And her outstanding track record as a fierce pro-choice defender of women, children, and working families is exactly why we need her to defeat Morrisey. Reproductive justice in Virginia hinges on the outcome of this CRITICAL election, which is why Vote Mama jumped into this race early, well before the primary. We are so proud to endorse Lashrecse and be in this fight alongside her! --------------------------------------------------------------- ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: - Speaking of reproductive justice champions — this month, two of our Vote Mama alumni, Attorney General Kris Mayes and Attorney General Charity Clark, joined a lawsuit against the FDA’s restriction to access of the abortion pill. - Meanwhile, in Nebraska, State Senator Machaela Cavanaugh broke news when she led a filibuster on the senate floor in protest of a Republican bill that would ban gender-affirming, life-saving care to trans youth. - Last month, we told you about Georgia State Representative Michelle Au introducing gun safety bills in Georgia, and a couple of weeks ago, HB161 moved forward with a subcommittee hearing. The safe-storage bill would set standards for how gun owners store firearms where children could potentially have access. - Another bill led by one of our alumna, State Senator Heather Gufaston in Minnesota, has just passed in the state senate and would provide no-cost school breakfast and lunches to Minnesota public schools. --------------------------------------------------------------- VOTE MAMA IN THE MEDIA: Vote Mama made lots of headlines this month, but we’re especially proud of a recent piece in Politico! Our fearless CEO, Liuba Grechen Shirley, spoke with Politico about the cultural and structural barriers moms face when they run for office, our legislative advocacy to tear down those barriers, and Vote Mama Foundation’s mission to pass Campaign Funds for Childcare in all 50 states by 2025! [Read the whole Politico article here! >>]( [Liuba Politico Article, March 2023]( --------------------------------------------------------------- ON THE RADAR: The Biden Administration is fighting to address the child care crisis and bring more women into the workforce. Last month, President Biden announced a new policy that would require any semiconductor manufacturer seeking federal subsidies to guarantee affordable, high-quality child care for workers who build or operate a plant. And just a few weeks ago, Biden also announced his 2024 budget plan which aims to boost childcare funding by billions of dollars and provide free preschool for every 4-year-old in the nation. [NYT Article, Biden Child Care Ruling, March 2023]( This is exactly the type of forward-thinking we like to see when it comes to policies that support women, children, and working families. But, we also recognize that there is still so much more work that needs to be done (at every level of government) to address the childcare crisis — and our Vote Mama candidates, our alumni, and our organization are fighting to make that happen. For now, we are happy to see that the Biden Administration continues to fight for working families and we are so pleased to see this step in the right direction! --------------------------------------------------------------- PROPEL OUR MOVEMENT: From helping candidates win elections, to supporting elected mamas as they seek meaningful policy change while in office, to mobilizing moms to take meaningful actions — we have an ambitious agenda to increase the political power of pro-choice Democratic moms. And our fight has never been more crucial. But none of this important work is possible without the help of grassroots supporters like you.
