I’m a fan of Ginny & Georgia, Netflix’s bonkers show about the rocky relationship between Georgia (Brianne Howey) and her daughter Ginny (Antonia Gentry), Ginny’s complicated and angsty romantic high school life, the drama between Ginny’s friends, Georgia’s black widow past as the murderer of at least one of her previous husbands, the private detective tracking her down, the eccentric and nosey small-towners in the New England village they live in, Georgia’s new life as the mayor’s wife-to-be, a school play, and, most importantly, Joe (Raymond Ablack), the lovestruck and lovestuck cafe owner who is one of a dozen men with a crush on Georgia. Yeah, it’s a lot, but somehow it all sticks together like a darker Gilmore Girls, making for a comfy series that you won’t be able to stop watching. The claustrophobic series takes place on an ocean oil rig off the coast of Scotland, where a strange dense fog rolls in and cuts off communication just when the crew is due to get back to the mainland. There’s an environmental and social message beneath all the fog, and plenty of familiar faces, including Game of Thrones’ Iain Glen and Line of Duty’s Martin Compston. And yep, it’s okay to turn the subtitles on to help with the thick accents. The adaptation of James Herriot’s novels about a veterinarian in the English countryside in the 1930s is as cozy as they come, mixing romance, humor, and rescuing animals. How can that NOT be good?
