Stop browsing, start watching! The best TV shows and movies to watch on every screen WLLQsbDNI:m:1:2364960064:DD9059FB9B865F3F881488A23AD05E69:r Hi!
One of the greatest mysteries of the universe, right after “What is the meaning of life?” and “What’s that crawling up your arm?” (ha ha gotcha), is “What the heck is HBO Max doing?” Earlier this week, HBO Max announced plans to expunge Westworld (and The Nevers, Raised by Wolves, and others) from its library despite being the owner of said shows. It is willfully shrinking its streaming library, in what feels like backward logic. The truth is taking a show off a streaming service means it doesn’t have to pay out residuals to cast and crew, and it can now license those shows to free, ad-supported streamers to make extra money. (Can you feel the excitement of watching a huge Westworld reveal followed by an ad for Claritin?) At a time when the streaming wars are still raging and HBO Max was on the upswing, this is a bold, purely business-minded strategy that I think is short-sighted. We’ll see how it plays out. Here’s what to watch this weekend. -Tim [Your Watch This Now! newsletter is created by Senior Recommendations and Reviews Editor Tim Surette and more show-obsessed editors at TV Guide!](WLLQsbDNI:m:1:2364960064:DD9059FB9B865F3F881488A23AD05E69:r) WLLQsbDNI:m:1:2364960064:DD9059FB9B865F3F881488A23AD05E69:r OUT TODAY ON NETFLIX [Netflix offers high art and popcorn thrills, both with so-so results](WLLQsbDNI:m:1:2364960064:DD9059FB9B865F3F881488A23AD05E69:r) The two big releases on Netflix this weekend couldn’t be more different. First up is Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, and with a title like that, your hoity-toity detector should be going off. It’s the latest from director Alejandro González Iñárritu (The Revenant) and follows a Mexican journalist living in Los Angeles who returns home to an identity crisis. It’s also loaded with surreal imagery, dance numbers, and axolotls. It’s certainly pretty (and long!), but it’s not quite as coherent as it should be. On the other end of the spectrum is The Recruit, a popcorn thriller that I describe as Emily in Paris meets Jack Ryan. Noah Centineo stars as a young lawyer for the CIA who gets tangled up with a dangerous asset, making it a spy thriller with fish-out-of-water comedy elements. Both are for certain moods and audiences, so if you think they fit the bill, binge away. WLLQsbDNI:m:1:2364960064:DD9059FB9B865F3F881488A23AD05E69:r OUT NOW ON AMAZON PRIME VIDEO [Nanny is a horror film from an immigrant’s perspective](WLLQsbDNI:m:1:2364960064:DD9059FB9B865F3F881488A23AD05E69:r) Thanks to new voices in Hollywood, we've been introduced to a fresh, thrilling subgenre of film: immigrant horror stories. Most of them have been pretty good (Netflix's His House and No One Gets Out Alive use their unique perspective well), and that trend looks like it will continue with Prime Video’s Nanny, the debut film from writer/director Nikyatu Jusu about an undocumented West African nanny caring for a New York couple's child and preparing for the arrival of her own child, whom she left behind in Senegal. The horror comes when a strange presence threatens her reality. It's a visually impressive debut about family, societal issues, and gender. WLLQsbDNI:m:1:2364960064:DD9059FB9B865F3F881488A23AD05E69:r SERIES PREMIERES SUNDAY ON PARAMOUNT+ [1923 brings major star power to the Yellowstone franchise (no offense, Costner)](WLLQsbDNI:m:1:2364960064:DD9059FB9B865F3F881488A23AD05E69:r) Maybe Taylor Sheridan will eventually run out of years to name Yellowstone spin-offs after, but [that day hasn't come yet](WLLQsbDNI:m:1:2364960064:DD9059FB9B865F3F881488A23AD05E69:r). 1923, set about 30 or 35 years before the birth of Kevin Costner's John Dutton III and about 40 years after the events of 1883, stars Harrison Ford (!) and Helen Mirren (!), and finds the Dutton family struggling to survive Prohibition, a historic drought, and an epidemic of cattle theft. As Liam Mathews [says in his review](WLLQsbDNI:m:1:2364960064:DD9059FB9B865F3F881488A23AD05E69:r), “1923 is an ambitious undertaking with a ton of potential that will give fans of Yellowstone a series that at times feels familiar and other times feels like it's expanding what Yellowstone can be.” -Allison Picurro WLLQsbDNI:m:1:2364960064:DD9059FB9B865F3F881488A23AD05E69:r
