The rumors of Netflix’s demise were highly exaggerated. After a nightmarish stretch of time earlier this year due to layoffs, bad subscriber projections, and a dearth of quality new programming, the streaming behemoth has rebounded. The stock is up 50% since summer lows, third quarter subscribers more than doubled what Netflix predicted, and almost a dozen new releases — several of which are worth watching, to my surprise — [are out today alone](W1xfK4hNi:m:1:2364960064:C30B6F89B05A32B7E85C71403E1941B9:r), with [even more good stuff coming next month](W1xfK4hNi:m:1:2364960064:C30B6F89B05A32B7E85C71403E1941B9:r). Meanwhile, HBO Max continues to slump as it cuts costs (though HBO is doing just fine), [Peacock may have given up](W1xfK4hNi:m:1:2364960064:C30B6F89B05A32B7E85C71403E1941B9:r), and Amazon’s gamble on Lord of the Rings [may not be the shrewd move we thought](W1xfK4hNi:m:1:2364960064:C30B6F89B05A32B7E85C71403E1941B9:r). Every time I think I have the streaming wars all figured out, the reality of big business gets in the way. Here are some suggestions of what to watch this weekend. -Tim [Your Watch This Now! newsletter is created by Senior Recommendations and Reviews Editor Tim Surette and more show-obsessed editors at TV Guide!](W1xfK4hNi:m:1:2364960064:C30B6F89B05A32B7E85C71403E1941B9:r) W1xfK4hNi:m:1:2364960064:C30B6F89B05A32B7E85C71403E1941B9:r OUT TODAY ON NETFLIX [The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself isn’t your typical YA horror fantasy](W1xfK4hNi:m:1:2364960064:C30B6F89B05A32B7E85C71403E1941B9:r) Netflix’s latest fantasy series, an adaptation of Sally Green’s Half Bad novels, has all the hallmarks of typical YA fare: a young man waiting for supernatural powers to manifest (this one is a witch), a budding and forbidden romance with another of his kind, and a chilling prophecy he must break free from (his father is a notorious murderer of witches). But it also has a few unique things going for it: It was brought to the screen by Giri/Haji’s Joe Barton, and it’s packed with waves of blood, exploding bodies, and swearing, making it YA for GUs (grown-ups). [Reviews have been positive](W1xfK4hNi:m:1:2364960064:C30B6F89B05A32B7E85C71403E1941B9:r), and I liked what I saw of the first few episodes, which reminded me of a better version of Shadow & Bone. W1xfK4hNi:m:1:2364960064:C30B6F89B05A32B7E85C71403E1941B9:r OUT TODAY ON NETFLIX [All Quiet on the Western Front reminds us that war is still hell](W1xfK4hNi:m:1:2364960064:C30B6F89B05A32B7E85C71403E1941B9:r) Director Edward Berger is in full command of this adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s seminal WWI novel about the horrors of war, packing the screen with grand vistas of violence and filling in the cracks with moments of emotional dismay. As Germany’s Oscar submission for Best International Feature Film, it’s also the first adaptation of the novel to use the subjects’ native tongue, creating an authenticity that takes it above your average war movie. After watching, you won’t come away happy, but you’ll come away wiser, knowing there are no winners when we take up arms. PT ON FOX [The World Series has an unexpected guest](W1xfK4hNi:m:1:2364960064:C30B6F89B05A32B7E85C71403E1941B9:r) The Los Angeles Dodgers were supposed to be in the 2022 World Series. If not them, then certainly the Atlanta Braves, last year’s champs. And if by some crazy twist of fate the Braves didn’t make it, then for sure it would be the New York Mets. Nope, nope, and nope. All were bounced, paving the way phor the phree-swinging Philadelphia Phillies, the last team to make the playoffs in the National League, to go on an improbable run to the championship. Bryce Harper and his squad will take on the tainted Houston Astros, so you know what that means: GO PHILLIES. Is there any chance HBO's anthology about the upstairs, downstairs dynamic between the staff at an upscale resort and the wealthy guests who stay there will be as good this time around? The cast — which includes Aubrey Plaza, F. Murray Abraham, Michael Imperioli, Haley Lu Richardson, and Jennifer Coolidge, reprising her role as flighty socialite Tanya McQuoid — is certainly promising. [But as I say in my review](W1xfK4hNi:m:1:2364960064:C30B6F89B05A32B7E85C71403E1941B9:r), the bottom line is Season 2 is more of what Season 1 was, which is both comforting — it’s still thoroughly enjoyable — and slightly less exciting for a show that announced its presence with such authority in Season 1. -Allison Picurro W1xfK4hNi:m:1:2364960064:C30B6F89B05A32B7E85C71403E1941B9:r BOO [Yes, I know, more Halloween movies…](W1xfK4hNi:m:1:2364960064:C30B6F89B05A32B7E85C71403E1941B9:r) But what else can I do?
