Shameless plug: My good friend Cory Barker, who co-hosted (and produced) the Totally Tubular podcast with me several years back and is a TV Guide contributor, has written a book! It’s all about TV networks’ excitement over social media and television in the early 2010s when Peak TV and Twitter were booming… and how the idea of harnessing a second screen for promotional purposes never really went anywhere. [We’ve got an excerpt from his book](WbxQibhNv:m:1:2364960064:157DFB6CF8BE193372325306B4C4361E:r), Social TV: Multi-Screen Content and Ephemeral Culture, that details a social media experiment that actually worked: Shonda Rhimes’ use of Twitter hashtags to drum up online interest in her hit show Scandal. It’s a fascinating look at what could have been. Here’s what to watch this weekend. -Tim [Your Watch This Now! newsletter is created by Senior Recommendations and Reviews Editor Tim Surette and more show-obsessed editors at TV Guide!](WbxQibhNv:m:1:2364960064:157DFB6CF8BE193372325306B4C4361E:r) WbxQibhNv:m:1:2364960064:157DFB6CF8BE193372325306B4C4361E:r OUT TODAY ON NETFLIX [The Gray Man was made with a lot of green](WbxQibhNv:m:1:2364960064:157DFB6CF8BE193372325306B4C4361E:r) Netflix is learning a few things about money. First, you can’t spend more than you make and become a profitable business. But also, it takes money to make money! What a conundrum! As the streamer cuts costs across its businesses, it’s also releasing its most expensive movie ever made, the $200 million action film The Gray Man, starring Ryan Gosling as a black ops member trying to run from a former colleague, played by Chris Evans. It’s not a great movie, [as Jordan Hoffman says in his review](WbxQibhNv:m:1:2364960064:157DFB6CF8BE193372325306B4C4361E:r), but who can resist the allure of a superlative, especially when it comes to money? WbxQibhNv:m:1:2364960064:157DFB6CF8BE193372325306B4C4361E:r TODAY AT 11/10C ON HBO, HBO MAX [The Rehearsal is real, or is it?](WbxQibhNv:m:1:2364960064:157DFB6CF8BE193372325306B4C4361E:r) It’s a light weekend of new television, and since I was away last weekend, I’d be remiss if I didn’t make sure you watched the wildest new TV experiment that premiered last Friday and continues today. Nathan Fielder follows up the excellent Nathan for You with this semi-reality show in which Fielder helps others prepare for an event by rehearsing what could happen on a set that replicates where it will happen. If that sounds strange, it should, because The Rehearsal is unlike any other show that has existed. Fielder’s commitment to his vision and his ability to comment on human nature and reflect on his own actions are cleverly inserted into the meta-comedy, and will inspire several memes, like “It’s days like these that I will never forgive the Chinese for inventing gunpowder.” This is a mad genius at work. Episode 1 is out on HBO Max; Episode 2 airs tonight. WbxQibhNv:m:1:2364960064:157DFB6CF8BE193372325306B4C4361E:r OUT TODAY ON AMAZON PRIME VIDEO [Anything’s Possible in Billy Porter’s new high school romance](WbxQibhNv:m:1:2364960064:157DFB6CF8BE193372325306B4C4361E:r) The ridiculously talented Billy Porter makes his feature film directorial debut with this sweet high school coming-of-age story about a trans girl (Eva Reign) and the boy (Abubakr Ali) who musters up the courage to ask her out, even though he knows the drama it will cause at school. Important casting note: The inimitable Renée Elise Goldsberry is in this. WbxQibhNv:m:1:2364960064:157DFB6CF8BE193372325306B4C4361E:r

OK, maybe my idea of fun is different from yours, but the lineup for the rest of 2022 has us excited.
