Lady Whistledown recommends these scandalous period dramas. Plus: A new CW import delivers a fresh take on supernatural teen drama, the most (and best) millennial show returns, and what to watch on Netflix right now. Hello!
Did you watch the Chicago Bears play the New Orleans Saints in the NFL Playoffs this weekend? Did you watch it on… Nickelodeon? In a first for major sports, [an alternate broadcast specifically for kids aired at the same time]( with its own broadcast booth, cameras, and visual effects intended to develop a new audience for pro sports or, you know, just get the kids to look up from their iPads for a few minutes. It was pretty cool, with “virtual slime cannons” unloading on the screen when a touchdown was scored and player comparisons to SpongeBob and Patrick rather than Bob Griese and Patrick Mahomes. I say let’s put an alternative broadcast of everything on Nickelodeon: more football, the World Series, the 2024 presidential election, the season finale of Criminal Minds… everything is better with slime. Good job, Nickelodeon. Here are this week’s TV picks. -Tim [Your Watch This Now! newsletter is created by Senior Recommendations and Reviews Editor Tim Surette and more show-obsessed editors at TV Guide!]( [Search Party]( Season 4 premieres Thursday on HBO Max
[Search Party is the darkly funny voice of a generation]( Few shows capture the intricate dance between the good intentions and overstepped bounds of millennial milieu more than Search Party, a comedy that started off on TBS during the network's impressive makeover in 2016 (a makeover that has already been dismantled) but moved to HBO Max for Season 3. Arrested Development's Alia Shawkat stars as Dory Seif, a post-grad occupational nomad who becomes obsessed with a missing persons case involving a college schoolmate. Pulling her self-absorbed friends into the mix, their quest for the truth leads them to — well, I don't want to say too much in case you haven't seen it yet, but it's a wild ride. [One of the darkest and funniest shows on air with a superb cast]( Search Party isn't for everyone, but those it's for will fall hard for it. [Trickster]( Series premiere Tuesday at 9/8c on The CW
[Trickster is a supernatural coming-of-age story told through new eyes]( As someone who thirsts for anything that has a fresh take on the familiar, The CW’s latest Canadian import, Trickster, is a warm welcome. The supernatural coming-of-age story takes the tried-and-true formula that so many YA shows use but filters it through the eyes of Indigenous people, following a teen from a broken family who slings drugs part-time while working the drive-thru window of a fast-food joint. But things start to get more complicated when the young man begins to experience strange things, like seeing his doppleganger at parties and encountering talking crows. On the surface it seems like something that would fit right at home on The CW, but it has the vibe of a sci-fi indie film from a first-time director — there’s some clumsiness, but it’s far outweighed by the positives — as it explores Indigenous folklore via a teen show. The commitment is low, too; Season 1 has just six episodes. [Bridgerton]( Coming soon
