The season finale of the yearâs biggest show features a surprise guest that everyoneâs talking about, Shudder offers a Santa Claus origin story you wonât find in kidsâ books, and the stars are coming to Netflix this week. Hello!
There aren’t enough days in the calendar year to support all the “holidays” that social media managers have created. Case in point: Today is apparently [“Answer the Phone Like Buddy the Elf” Day]( a nod to Will Ferrell’s holiday classic. If you are one of those weirdos who still answers their phone, you may need to brush up on your Buddy quotes with a rewatch of Elf. Where can you watch it? It’s one of [many holiday movies you can get on Amazon Prime]( but we have [other ways you can watch]( too. Me, I will probably answer the phone like Ron Burgundy or maybe Bob Oblong from the vastly underrated and sadly unstreamable [WB animated series The Oblongs](. Stay classy, internet. Here are our TV picks for the weekend. -Tim [Your Watch This Now! newsletter is created by Senior Recommendations and Reviews Editor Tim Surette and more show-obsessed editors at TV Guide!]( [Ma Rainey's Black Bottom]( Now on Netflix
[Head on down to Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom]( Chadwick Boseman's final film role was in this Netflix original that's based on the Tony-nominated Broadway play written by the Pulitzer-winning playwright August Wilson. That's a lot of talent already, and it only gets better. Viola Davis stars as Ma Rainey, a powerhouse blues singer in 1927 Chicago who holds up a recording session to butt heads with her white manager over the ownership rights to her music. Boseman plays a trumpeter in the recording session who's angling to get a foothold in the music business and sees Rainey's fight as an opportunity for his own gain. It's an electric movie about race and music ownership, with powerful performances from both Davis and Boseman. [Creepshow]( Now on Shudder
[Ho, ho, horror, it’s a Creepshow Christmas!]( Horror specialist Shudder rings in the holidays with a truly demented episode offering a new and never-before-thought-of, not even on the wildest peyote trip, origin story of Santa Claus. It starts with a support group for shapeshifters, where Adam Pally’s character arrives after he suspects he’s murdering people during blackouts, before diving into the lore of Santa and spilling a lot of blood in wonderful B-movie fashion. Plus, Lil Yachty makes a cameo and it makes as much sense as the rest of the episode, which is to say, not at all. When it’s your turn to pick the holiday programming after eight hours of Hallmark movies, change the mood and flip this on. [The Mandalorian]( Season 2 finale out now on Disney+
[Is The Mandalorian going in the right direction?]( Have you noticed that Season 2 of The Mandalorian has been a little… Star Wars-y? What started as its own sidequest that required only general knowledge of the Star Wars universe has become entangled deep in Star Wars lore as the season moved on. [Is it too much? Maybe](. Anyway, the finale came out today, and the internet is already abuzz about a special drop-in that we won’t spoil here. Enjoy it.
