Netflix remakes a classic book series for modern times, CBS honors a legend who passed, TNTâs Snowpiercer finally gets on track, and PBS and NBC have the fireworks youâll be missing in person this July 4th.
Hello!
Happy Birthday, United States of America. You’re relatively young for a country, and apparently you are currently going through puberty right before our eyes. Strange things are growing inside of you, you’re experiencing unusual urges, your mood swings are all over the place, and your future looks bleak. But don’t worry, you’ll get through this and become the country we all envisioned you would be when you were born. Once the raging hormones subside and common sense takes over, you’ll mature and this awkward phase will be a thing of the past. I have faith in you! Please don’t let me down. Here are this weekend’s TV picks. –Tim

[Hamilton](
[Get your history rapped at you with Hamilton](
Now on Disney+
If you never got tickets to see Hamilton on Broadway with Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr., Daveed Diggs, and the rest of the original cast — and chances are you didn't, because tickets cost about as much as a year of tuition at a state university — this is the next best thing. This film version of the epochal musical about the life of founding father Alexander Hamilton was constructed from live performances taped in June 2016, and was supposed to be released in theaters, but that didn't happen. Instead it's going straight to Disney+, which will cost you just a few dollars a month. You may know the songs from listening to the soundtrack, but now you can have the visual accompaniment, [minus two f-words]( that are being edited out to keep the musical from getting an R rating. -Liam Mathews

[The Baby-Sitters Club](
[Feeling overwhelmed? Call the The Baby-Sitters Club](
Now on Netflix
Ann M. Martin's cherished books about a gaggle of girls who set up their own baby-sitting business are updated for modern audiences with Netflix's new adaptation. I know what you're thinking, "For real, TV Guide? The Baby-Sitters Club?" Yeah! [The show is a delight for all ages]( faithfully adapting the books while also adding in episodes dealing with important current-day topics, such as transgender visibility and racism. It's light and refreshing family-friendly TV, perfect for an easy summer binge with the family.
FOR CARL
[The Dick Van Dyke Show](
[Relive the genius of Carl Reiner as both a TV creator and an actor... in color!](
Friday at 8/7c on CBS
We lost an icon this week when Carl Reiner [passed away at the age of 98](. Reiner’s contributions to television and film are too vast and long to list here, but one of Reiner’s creations, The Dick Van Dyke Show, is a perfect starting point to remember his greatness. CBS is airing two Reiner-approved colorized episodes of the 1960s series on Friday, both of which highlight Reiner not just as a creator, but also an actor. In “Coast to Coast Big Mouth,” Reiner’s character Alan Brady gets outed as a toupee wearer on national television, and in “October Eve,” one of Reiner’s personal favorites, Reiner plays an artist (not Alan Brady) who paints Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) naked even though she posed fully clothed. Watch these, then follow it up with a screening of The Jerk, a comedy classic Reiner wrote and directed.
AND THE ROCKETS’ RED GLARE
[A Capitol Fourth](
[Watch stuff blow up for ‘Merica](
Saturday at 8/7c on NBC, PBS and [online](
A bunch of yahoos in your neighborhood will no doubt be setting off explosive charges over the weekend at the most inconvenient times, but that has no shot at replacing your local fireworks show which was probably canceled due to the pandemic. Stay inside and give your dog a break by tuning into one of two fireworks specials, depending on what feel you’re going for. NBC has the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular from New York City, with performances from Black Eyed Peas, John Legend, Lady A, and others, while PBS has A Capitol Fourth from Washington D.C., with symphony orchestras, John Fogerty, Patti LaBelle, and others.
YOU SAY YOU WANT A REVOLUTION?
[Snowpiercer](
[Snowpiercer finally gets to the good stuff](
Sunday at 9/8c on TNT
If you were a fan of Bong Joon Ho’s film Snowpiercer and were eager to see TNT’s adaptation, only to be crushed by the TV version starting off as a murder mystery with the lead character turned into a homicide detective, [I feel you](. But the good news is that the series finally starts to live up to some potential starting with tonight’s episode. The murder mystery has been solved, and the focus can go back to in-train revolution and setting up the second season. You don’t need to have seen the first seven episodes to jump in, and the season finale, which will air in a few weeks, is pretty wild. This is what the show should have been all along.
