More important conversations about race and police are worth listening to, as Gayle King, Oprah Winfrey, and Andy Cohen host specials on Black Lives Matter and the future of America. Hello! Yesterday’s newsletter was all about scripted comedies from a Black perspective that can help educate viewers on the Black Lives Matter movement. But there’s another avenue of comedy where Black comedians have flourished with the spotlight on them to directly communicate their viewpoints while also being absolutely hilarious. TV Guide’s Malcolm Venable has put together a [list of the seven essential stand-up specials from Black comedians]( including Richard Pryor and Dave Chappelle, and where you can easily stream them. Here are tonight’s TV picks. –Tim [Your Watch This Now! newsletter is created by Senior Recommendations and Reviews Editor Tim Surette and more show-obsessed editors at TV Guide!]( WATCH THIS NOW! [Own Presents: Where Do We Go From Here?]( [Oprah Winfrey asks Where Do We Go From Here?]( Tuesday at 9/8c on OWN, Discovery, Cooking, Travel, TLC, ID, Science, Animal Planet, HGTV, and more Oprah Winfrey hosts OWN Spotlight: Where Do We Go From Here?, a two-night special (Tuesday and Wednesday at 9/8c) that will be awfully hard to miss as it’s airing on all of Discovery’s 18 cable channels. Rather than focus on what has already happened, Winfrey speaks with Black leaders, activists, and artists to ask what happens next in the fight for equality. Guests include politician Stacey Abrams, Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, and filmmaker Ava DuVernay. [SHOP NOW]( BLACK BIRDERS UNITE [CBS News: Justice For All]( [CBS News Special: Justice For All speaks with Biden, Barr, and a Black birdwatcher]( Tuesday at 10/9c on CBS CBS This Morning’s Gayle King anchors this primetime special detailing how the murder of George Floyd by officers of the Minneapolis Police Department ingnited a movement to end police brutality. The hourlong special will feature interviews with presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, U.S. Attorney General Willam Barr, and Christian Cooper, who was threatened by a white woman while he was bird watching in New York’s Central Park. A HELPFUL CONVERSATION [Watch What Happens Live]( [Watch What Happens Live with W. Kamau Bell and Porsha Williams]( Tuesday at 10/9c on Bravo Andy Cohen’s talk show continues its two-part conversation around the Black Lives Matter movement with The Real Housewives of Atlanta’s Porsha Williams and comedian and activist W. Kamau Bell. The intimate conversation differs from other shows like it because it delves deep into the thoughts of Williams and Bell, rather than skipping around to highlights from several different viewpoints, making it a very personal account of the movement. In the first part, Williams opened up about her first experience with racism; Bell offered concerns that without the pandemic already gluing everyone to the news, George Floyd’s death would have been overlooked; and Andy Cohen was open about his need to do more and educate himself about equality. AS N.W.A. SAID... [Last Week Tonight with John Oliver]( [Last Week Tonight explains defunding the police]( Now on HBO’s streaming apps In discussing some of the media’s attention to the looting that has splintered off from the peaceful protests, John Oliver says, “If you’ve said the name Macy’s more than you’ve said the name Breonna Taylor this week, you can very much f*** off.” This week’s Last Week Tonight was Oliver and his team at its best, focusing not just on the police’s corrupt history, but also on ways to solve it. The term “Defund the Police” is addressed clearly and plainly, with evidence that such a system can work. And as usual, it’s Oliver’s earnestness and passion that ably delivers the message. But nothing is as powerful as the final video clip of an angry woman explaining her community’s mentality that a choked-up Oliver introduces. It’s a great and important episode.
