An NBC medical drama welcomes a CBS star who produces an ABC hit, Ken Burns gets to know the real you with an educational docuseries, and Netflixâs latest film is four weddings and a time loop.
Hello!
Working from home during the coronavirus pandemic is presenting all sorts of new challenges for those used to escaping temptations in a sterile office environment. The usual 9 to 5 becomes more like a 9:37 to 4:42, the quick Animal Crossing lunch break stretches to 90 minutes, and, if you are the parent of a young one, your child is screaming in your face ALL. DAY. LONG. Thankfully, there’s one easy escape to [take you away like Calgon]( TV-themed backgrounds for your Zoom meetings! In your next video conference call, rather than show off a pile of dirty dishes and a stack of instant ramen wrappers behind you, why not transport yourself to Love Island or The Good Place with [these free TV-themed Zoom backgrounds]( that virtually erase your current living situation? They’re easy to do, and provide a little fun while everyone forgets to mute themselves and talks over each other. Here are tonight’s TV picks. –Tim

[New Amsterdam](
[New Amsterdam paging new hot doc](
Season 2 finale Tuesday at 9/8c on NBC
New Amsterdam wasn’t supposed to end its second season tonight. Like [many other television programs, the season was cut short]( — by three episodes in New Amsterdam’s case — by the coronavirus pandemic. But the makeshift finale still ends at a critical point by introducing a new character who makes a major mark on the hospital. Hawaii Five-0 star and The Good Doctor producer Daniel Dae Kim joins the cast as Dr. Shin, a doc whose medical philosophy flies in the face of Ryan Eggold’s Dr. Max Goodwin as he doesn’t attempt to put out every fire in front of him and isn’t afraid to take care of himself before others. Needless to say, his work ethic rattles the whole hospital. You might not like him at first, not with Max in the background sacrificing everything just to make one person happy, but you’ll probably come around by the time Season 3 rolls around.

[The Gene: An Intimate History will show you what you’re made of](
Part 2 airs Tuesday at 8/7c on PBS
There’s a lot of talk about staying in shape during our self-quarantine so that when we emerge from our cocoons in a virus-free environment, we can still fit through the doors of our employers’ office buildings. But what about our brains? Give the ol’ noggin a workout with PBS’s fascinating two-part documentary The Gene: An Intimate History, based on the 2016 best-selling book and produced by Ken Burns. It’s a comprehensive look at the field of genetics, from its discovery through a set of wrinkly pea pods to its future of designer humans, which is deemed equally awe-inspiring and terrifying. Where’s the line between eradicating debilitating medical conditions and creating a superrace of homogenous beings? Narrated by Dave Costabile (Breaking Bad’s Gale) and mixing a history lesson with personalized stories of doctors and patients on the forefront of genetic manipulation, this is an easy way to become an expert in the field in just four hours. Tonight’s finale focuses on the future of gene therapy, but you can also watch Part 1, which is more focused on the history of genetics, on the [PBS website]( or app.

[Love Wedding Repeat](
[Love Wedding Repeat is Edge of Tomorrow for rom-coms](
Now on Netflix
When the British aren’t destroying our dispositions with deeply depressing detective dramas detailing the dead, they’re rejuvenating romance with raucous rom-coms. This incredibly British Netflix original film — [which is getting a wide range of reviews]( — takes place at a wedding in Italy, where everything goes wrong as its main character (Sam Claflin) evades his ex, sedates the wrong guest, stumbles over his words Hugh Grant-style, and flirts with the American woman ([Olivia Munn]( who got away. If you liked Four Weddings a Funeral a ton, then you might like this too. But seriously, this movie is so British that it turned all my Ruffles into french fries. There’s a twist, too: Multiple versions of the same wedding play out as Claflin’s character tries to find the version that has a happy ending, like how Tom Cruise tried to not die in Edge of Tomorrow. Is it a great movie? No. But will it make you forget about things for a bit? Probably. Bonus: Irish star-in-the-making Aisling Bea is in this.

[Belgravia](
[Belgravia will satisfy your Downton Abbey craving](
Miniseries premiere is now on Epix; new episodes Sundays at 9/8c on Epix
The subscription network Epix continues to be the best cable network that you aren’t subscribed to, with underrated prestige hits like Get Shorty, Berlin Station, and Perpetual Grace, Ltd. Add to that Belgravia, a new miniseries from Julian Fellowes, the creator of Downton Abbey. You’ll definitely notice the Downton Abbey-ness in Belgravia, a soap opera set in the Victorian-era of the 1800s that mostly follows the upstairs portion of the upstairs-downstairs depiction of well-to-do families in London’s Belgravia district. At just six episodes, it works as a condensed Downton, tightening the story from Fellowes’ novel that it’s based on.
