A popular YouTube series makes the jump to cable with a few big changes, sci-fiâs greatest classic gets updated, and a new indie romp is True Romance for todayâs generation.

[Frontline asks what it’s like to be busy as a Bezos](
Tuesday at 9/8c on PBS
If you are sitting in your living room surrounded by roommates and wondering what the easiest way to become a multi-billionaire is, check out tonight’s Frontline. Amazon Empire: The Rise and Reign of Jeff Bezos looks at how Bezos went from a dweeb who sold books to the richest man in the world who [saves expensive sci-fi shows from cancellation]( as a hobby. But it ain’t all champagne and caviar up in here, Amazon Empire does its due diligence and looks at Amazon’s impact on the world — both financially and environmentally — as well as the darker sides of the company that allowed Bezos to ascend to immortal wealth. The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if it’s a coincidence that Bezos [made a philanthropic $10 billion donation to fight climate change]( the day before this program premieres.

WINGS OF DE-FIRE
[Hot Ones: The Game Show](
[Hot Ones is a real brain-burner](
Tuesday at 10/9c on truTV
Hot Ones may sound familiar to you. Yes, it is the unofficial name of TV Guide’s newsletter team, but it’s also a [hit YouTube series]( in which celebrities sit down for an interview while also eating incredibly spicy chicken wings. The brand expands to cable television via truTV, with the web series’ premise changed… rather significantly. The tongue-searing chicken wings remain, but gone are the celebrities and interviews, and in are normal people and a trivia show. But there’s one question that has no correct answer: ranch or bleu cheese? One vote for ranch.
SNORE OF THE WORLDS?
[War of the Worlds](
[War of the Worlds retells H.G. Wells’ classic, but slower](
Series premiere now on Epix
When I say the phrase “slow burn,” do you get excited or do you think NO THANKS? For all of you in the former group, you might want to check out French network Canal+’s adaptation of the sci-fi classic War of the Worlds, which is set in present-day France and England and stars Gabriel Byrne. The bones of the show are the same as the legendary tale’s; a hostile alien invasion has us puny Earthlings scurrying like ants, but the tone is more measured in what some might call an eight-episode series that’s in no hurry. You’ll be surprised at how chill everyone is when aliens are not just discovered for the first time, but they’re hurling giant balls of metal across Europe and killing millions. The end of the first episode ramps up the action, but expect most of the series to be more intellectual sci-fi. (This is not to be confused with the BBC’s three-part The War of the Worlds, which was released around the same time and will come to the U.S. via AMC’s premium streaming service later this year.)
MAKE IT A MOVIE NIGHT
[Villains](
[Villains is a millennial True Romance](
Now on Hulu
In this highly watchable indie film, the familiar story of amateur crooks hot for each other (Bonnie and Clyde, True Romance, Natural Born Killers) gets updated when the criminal couple (Bill Skarsgård and Maika Monroe) gets pit against a husband and wife (Jeffrey Donovan, Kyra Sedgwick) even more deranged than they are when they’re taken prisoner after discovering a girl chained up in the basement during a break-in. It’s a charmingly deranged tale about will that’s packed with suspense and twists, and good if you’re looking for a darkly comic thriller that easily goes in one ear and out the other. Plus, Sedgwick goes all in while performing a burlesque-style striptease in a beautiful vignette that will leave you wondering how this is the same actress who played The Closer’s Brenda Johnson.
