A pair of fun crime anthologies premiere on USA. Plus, a true crime show you can watch in any order, the season premiere of a fan-favorite comedy, and a surprisingly grounded Riverdale spin-off.
Hello!
We love cops and crooks stories here at TV Guide. Four out of five of tonight’s recs have an element of crime. Briarpatch, The Sinner, and Interrogation are all different types of murder mysteries – a whodunit, a whydunit, and a dun-it-yourself, respectively – while Brooklyn Nine-Nine is about cops who sometimes solve crimes and catch bad guys in between goofy precinct house shenanigans. And we didn’t make room to include yet another cop show, the [mediocre Tommy]( a drama that premieres tonight (10/9c, CBS). The only pick that doesn’t have crime is fashion dramedy Katy Keene – WE THINK! It’s a Riverdale spin-off, so who knows what will happen? Here’s more on tonight’s TV picks. -[Liam Mathews](

[Interrogation mixes it up](
Now on CBS All Access
This based-on-a-true-crime series has a novel conceit: Viewers are able to watch the first nine episodes in any order, with the tenth resolving the story. The show takes the form of a series of interrogations over many years, as investigators try to figure out what really happened with a man who was convicted of murdering his mother but continued to maintain his innocence. The real case on which the show is based has not been revealed in order to protect the privacy of the family, but the show draws on real transcripts and case files to help the viewer feel like they’re right there with the detectives. You don’t have to watch it in order, but [maybe you should](. The strong cast includes Peter Sarsgaard, Kyle Gallner, David Strathairn, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Vincent D’Onofrio.

[Brooklyn Nine-Nine is back for Season Seven-Seven](
Season 7 premiere Thursday at 8/7c on NBC
One of TV’s funniest comedies returns with a special two-episode season premiere. The first episode finds Jake leading a manhunt after an assassination attempt on a city council member, while Holt tries to adjust to his new job as a uniformed officer. The second finds Captain Kim (guest star Nicole Bilderback), Holt’s replacement as commander of the Nine-Nine, trying to ingratiate herself with the crew by hosting a dinner party at her house. The episodes are followed by an episode of Will & Grace at 9/8c and the premiere of new comedy Indebted at 9:30/8:30c, which stars Adam Pally and Abby Elliott as a young couple whose lives get turned upside down when his broke parents (Fran Drescher and Steven Weber) move in. [It’s not good, don't watch it](.
Katy Keene is short for ‘Katherine Keener’
[Katy Keene brings Riverdale to NYC](
Series premiere Thursday at 8/7c on The CW
This is a Riverdale spin-off kind of in name only, as they’re both based on Archie comics but don’t have much else in common besides Ashleigh Murray as Josie McCoy (of Josie & the Pussycats), who moves to New York to further her music career. Her roommate is Katy Keene, played by CW fave Lucy Hale, who has big dreams of becoming a fashion designer. It’s tonally sort of like a wholesome Gossip Girl or Sex and the City, which were similarly aspirational New York shows. It’s pretty crazy that this and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina are both Riverdale spin-offs. That’s like if Felicity and Buffy the Vampire Slayer were both spin-offs of Beverly Hills 90210.
Principal Sinner
[The Sinner has another confession to make](
Season 3 premiere Thursday at 9/8c on USA
Executive producer Jessica Biel’s mystery anthology returns for another [quietly solid season](. This time, Jamie Burns (Matt Bomer), a schoolteacher with a dark secret, is the subject of Det. Harry Ambrose’s (Bill Pullman) investigation. As it goes with The Sinner, we know he did a very bad thing, we just don’t know why. And we’ll find out along with Ambrose as he pieces together the significance of Jamie’s relationship with Nick (Chris Messina, in a raw, yearning performance), a friend of his from college. After its pulpy, borderline deranged first season, The Sinner has evolved into an admirably sophisticated mystery show.
Dawson’s Patch
[Jump into the Briarpatch](
Series premiere Thursday at 10/9c on USA
Then after The Sinner finishes its first twist, USA will introduce a new crime anthology with Briarpatch, a Coen Brothers-influenced show created by former TV critic Andy Greenwald and executive-produced by Mr. Robot’s Sam Esmail. Rosario Dawson stars as an ice-cold political operative who returns to her small Southwestern town to investigate the murder of her cop sister. While there, she gets reacquainted with some colorful characters. [It’s far from perfect, but it has some fun stuff in it]( particularly Jay R. Ferguson as a childhood friend of Dawson’s Allegra Dill who grew up to be the richest man in town (and a total crook).
