Homicide Hunterâs Lt. Joe Kenda goes out on top, a new nature documentary series reveals all the things animals get up to under the cover of darkness, and Netflix is trying its hand at fashion competitions
Hello!
Surprising news breaks every day in this business, but let me tell you, [the news that True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto is reuniting with Matthew McConaughey for a potential new FX series]( about a security guard/former minister who gets dragged into a world of corruption while searching for a missing Texas woman is among the most surprising. I don’t know why, except that I still hold a grudge against Pizzolatto for True Detective Season 2. But that’s my problem, not yours! Here are tonight’s TV picks. – Kaitlin

[Homicide Hunter closes its last case](
Series finale Wednesday at 9/8c on Investigation Discovery
For nine years, ID’s popular true crime series Homicide Hunter: Lt. Joe Kenda showcased the most haunting and challenging cases from Kenda’s 23 years with the Colorado Springs Police Department, during which time he had an impressive 92 percent solve rate. Tonight, the veteran homicide detective and the show that made him famous will say goodbye in a series finale that examines the substantial psychological toll the job took on Kenda’s well-being during his long and distinguished career in law enforcement. The finale, which features commentary from Joe’s wife, Kathy, and their two grown children, Dan and Kris, is a compelling look at how one man went from police officer to true crime television pioneer and used the medium of TV as a form of personal therapy.

NIGHT MOVES
[Night on Earth illuminates the nocturnal animal kingdom](
Now on Netflix
When I was a little kid, I bought a postcard while on vacation. It was all black, and in white text it said “the beach at night.” I thought it was hilarious then, and I still think it’s really funny now, but I have a sneaking suspicion that is not what Netflix’s new nature documentary series Night on Earth is going to be like. Narrated by Samira Wiley (The Handmaid’s Tale), the six-episode series uses ground-breaking technology to reveal what the wild world of the animal kingdom gets up to while us humans are busy bingeing Netflix into the wee hours of the morning. For what it’s worth, [it looks pretty cool](.
NETFLIX BUT MAKE IT FASHION
[Next in Fashion puts a new spin on Project Runway](
Season 1 now on Netflix
It’s wild it took this long for television to be inundated with multiple competing versions of Project Runway, but here we are. Although Amazon’s Making the Cut won’t debut until March, Netflix’s attempt to capitalize on the fashion competition market arrives today! Next in Fashion, hosted by Queer Eye’s Tan France and designer and model Alexa Chung, follows 18 hopeful contestants as they take part in challenges that are centered on different trends or styles that have influenced how men and women dress around the world. (I’m gonna guess they don’t mean yoga pants.) Across 10 episodes, contestants compete for a chance to win enough money to buy a cute house in the Midwest and an opportunity to debut their collection with a luxury retailer. The list of guest judges apparently includes big names in the fashion industry, but I haven’t purchased new clothing since I was in a PacSun circa 2004, so you’ll just have to take Netflix’s word for it.
THIS IS ROYALLY MESSED UP
[The recent royal rumble gets twice the prime-time special treatment](
Wednesday at 8/7c on Fox and 10/9c on ABC
It was only a matter of time before the blood-thirsty American media caught up to its British counterparts and attempted to capitalize on the drama surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to step back from the duties of royal life, and now two networks are airing competing prime-time specials on the same night. How totally awkward for them? Fox’s one-hour special, Harry & Meghan: The Royals in Crisis, features a TMZ investigation into the couple’s decision to be more like the rest of us plebs. It airs at 8/7c, while ABC’s Royal Divide: Harry, Meghan, and The Crown (not The Crown) does something similar at 10/9c.
