A Nordic mystery thriller will keep you chilly this winter, a pope-tastic drama will have you scream

A Nordic mystery thriller will keep you chilly this winter, a pope-tastic drama will have you screaming Hail Mary, and Thanksgiving gets football but Christmas gets basketball. Ho Ho Ho! Today is Christmas, but let’s give a shoutout to all the winter holidays that are celebrated at this time. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Fantastic Festivus, Killer Krampusmas, and a Gnarly New Year! From everyone at TV Guide, we wish you the best and hope you’re having a wonderful winter break. If you’re looking for some crackin’ holiday content to stream to your TV, [check out our holiday TV guide]( or better yet, end the year on a positive note by finally finishing that show you keep telling yourself you’ll watch (I’m coming for you, Mr. Robot!). Here are tonight’s TV picks. –Tim [Your Watch This Now! newsletter is created by Senior Recommendations and Reviews Editor Tim Surette and more show-obsessed editors at TV Guide!]( WATCH THIS NOW! [The Two Popes]( [One Pope, Two Popes, Red Pope, Blue Pope]( Now on Netflix Netflix is hellbent on taking home an Oscar next year. The streamer is delivering its third Best Picture contender in a mere month with The Two Popes, following the critical adoration of Marriage Story and The Irishman (sorry, 6 Underground, [the critics don’t deserve your awesome explosioniness](. The drama imagines what Pope Benedict and Pope Francis yakked about during the transition period between their reigns, when the two figures, who had differing opinions on the papacy and Catholicism, formed a surprising friendship. It’s already been nominated for four Golden Globes, including best drama film and acting nods for its leads Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce. I personally can’t wait for the scene of the conical hat crawling off Benedict’s head and climbing onto Francis’ head, where its tendrils symbiotically link up with its new vessel. WORST. SPECIAL. EVER. [Star Wars Christmas Special]( [You may as well watch the Star Wars Christmas Special]( Now on [YouTube]( You’ve seen The Rise of Skywalker seven times already, you’ve watched each episode of The Mandalorian twice, and you’re on your third playthrough of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. It’s time to diversify your Star Wars intake with the infamous holiday special that’s pegged by many as the worst thing ever created. The 1978 television special had more misfires than a Stormtrooper gun range, and rumor has it that George Lucas wanted it wiped from existence. Thanks to YouTube, that’s not going to happen, and we can all watch Carrie Fisher [try to put words to John Williams’ famous anthem](. WATCH THIS SNOW! [Wisting]( [Wisting the night away]( Now on Acorn TV Did it snow today where you live? Everyone longs for a white Christmas, but you may not agree while watching the Norwegian crime thriller Wisting, which uses the powdery white stuff to spectacular effect. The story kicks off when melting snow revealsa corpse that local detectives trace to be the work of a possible serial killer from America. FBI agent (Carrie-Ann Moss) is brought over to work with the stoic Norwegian homicide detective Wisting. The citizen-friendly local law — particularly those involving stricter gun control — provides tension between the two agencies, and more interestingly, underscores the difference in worldviews. Twists abound, and the snowy scenery is breathtaking. The series premiered in America last week and Episode 2 debuts today. SLAMMA CLAUS [NBA Basketball]( [The Battle for L.A. caps an all-day NBA marathon]( Games start at noon ET/9 a.m. PT on ABC, ESPN Thanksgiving has always belonged to football, but Christmas has become intrinsically linked to the NBA as it has grown in popularity, with the association scheduling marquee matchups for an all-day affair. The championship is a wide-open race following the breakup of the Golden State Warriors, and the five games scheduled today feature particularly juicy matchups. The top four teams in the Eastern Conference play the early games, but it’s the prime-time battle for Los Angeles between the Lakers and the Clippers that’s the must-watch. The Clippers won the first matchup in convincing fashion, but the Lakers have since gone on to claim the NBA’s best record. We’re still taking the Clippers, though, because they’re better and way less annoying. Sorry, Lakers fans. [Unsubscribe]( | [View online]( ©2019 CBS Interactive | All Rights Reserved.
