Dog groomers get their due in an HBO documentary, a comedian deftly breaks down the divide in America, and The Voice declares a champion.
Hello!
Ayyy, happy birthday to da Pope! Pope Francis turns 83 today, so while he’s walking the halls of The Vatican in his birthday suit, you dig into some pope content on your TV. There’s HBO’s The Young Pope, starring Jude Law and a kangaroo in a miniseries that isn’t your typical pope show. There’s Showtime’s 2011 series The Borgias, starring Jeremy Irons as a mean pope. There’s the similarly titled The Borgia, which came out the same year as The Borgias (it was a very pope-ular year for popes!), and also follows the corruption of Pope Alexander IV. There’s also the upcoming Netflix film The Two Popes, starring Anthony Hopkins as Pope Benedict XVI and Jonathan Pryce as the future Pope Francis; why settle for ONE pope when you can have two? And finally, there’s [Mr. Show’s sketch about a pope expert]( played by David Cross, that begins with an OJ-style white Bronco chase, and the Mr. Show follow-up [With Bob and David’s take on a foul-mouthed Pope starring in an acid reflux medication commercial]( proving Bob Odenkirk should always play the Pope. Grab some pope-corn, and get pope-ing, pope-le! Here are tonight TV popes. I mean picks. –Pope Tim I

[Ronny Chieng lets America have it in his sharp comedy special](
Now on Netflix
Ronny Chieng, who you may know from Crazy Rich Asians, The Daily Show, or his Comedy Central series Ronny Chieng: International Student, is a man of the world. The Malaysian-born comedian has lived in New Hampshire, Singapore, Australia, and New York City, providing his stand-up special Ronny Chieng: Asian Comedian Destroys America with funny observations of America as both an outsider and a resident, and a solid argument about why America needs an Asian president. But his best bits involve his personal takes on Asian parents wanting their kids to be doctors (of all the reasons they want their kids to be doctors, helping people is way down at the bottom, he says) and a wild story about trying to make it to his wedding halfway across the world. Chieng mixes humor and anger for a fiery cocktail of amped-up comedy.

[Well Groomed](
[Well Groomed is about a kaleidoscopic canine culture](
Tuesday at 9/8c on HBO
This documentary special starts with the booming, “The following is a presentation of HBO Sports,” because make no mistake, the world of creative dog grooming is intense AF. Well Groomed isn’t about clipping a Shih Tzu’s nails or trimming the coat of a Pomeranian; it’s about turning poofy pooches into colored clouds. These dogs are living canvases, splashed with neon colors as their groomers do everything they can to win the big prize at a creative grooming dog show in Hershey, Penn. Documentaries about crazy pet-obsessed people are kind of my jam, and Well Groomed drops some choice nuggets like: “Kobe is my miniature poodle, and he is my creative partner.” There is no shortage of images of dogs with dinosaurs, flowers, and Pokémon dyed into their coats, and the dogs seem to love it. You might, too.
BANG BANG?
[Empire](
[It ain’t an Empire finale without someone pointing a gun at someone](
Fall finale Tuesday at 9/8c on Fox
With the number of times someone has looked down the barrel of a loaded gun in Empire, it’s amazing that anyone is alive in this show. But here we are, halfway through Season 6, and somehow most of the Lyons are still breathing. That could change tonight, because guns are drawn and pointed at important people on multiple occasions, and there’s a cliffhanger that will leave everyone on the edge of their seats until next year. But the best part involves Lucious doing something so Lucious-ly at an awards show, using his moment to pout like the self-obsessed music mogul he is. Empire has been running on fumes for years now, but it still knows what’s important: pointing guns at people.
THIS IS IT
[The Voice](
[The Voice declares a champ](
Season 17 finale Tuesday at 9/8c on NBC
There are two hours of The Voice tonight, but unless you enjoy sappy filler and watching clips you’ve already seen, the 9 o’clock hour is where it’s at. That’s when the new champ will be announced, following yesterday’s final performances. Expect surprise guests to sing some songs with the finalists, fan-favorite alumni to show up for a final bow, and whoever wins tonight to release some sort of Christmas album ASAP.
