The Syrian Civil War gets seen through the eyes of a mother, a pair of cops look to rewrite the way

The Syrian Civil War gets seen through the eyes of a mother, a pair of cops look to rewrite the way police handle the mentally ill, and the Pearsons head home for the holidays. Hello, Baby Yoda Fan Club member! Technology has made our lives easier. Well, some aspects of our lives. It’s great to tell Alexa to display your boss’ vacation photos on your smart TV, set your Nest thermostat to 88 degrees, and play Glenn Frey’s “The Heat Is On” on your living room Sonos speaker without lifting a finger, but that comfort comes at a price: thousands of dollars! But that shouldn’t be limited to the one percent. We’re here to help you take your first step toward technology-aided laziness with [GameSpot’s gift guide to must-have gadgets that are under fifty bucks](. Sure, it’s supposed to be a guide for buying gifts for other people, but we all took a vote and decided you’re worth it. Here are tonight’s TV picks. –Tim [Your Watch This Now! newsletter is created by Senior Recommendations and Reviews Editor Tim Surette and more show-obsessed editors at TV Guide!]( Watch This Now! [For Sama]( [Oscar contender For Sama will crank the tears right out of your eyes]( Tuesday at 10/9c on PBS I will eat my hat if the Frontline documentary For Sama isn’t nominated for an Academy Award later this year. This stunning film is told from the perspective of the filmmaker, Aleppo activist and student Waad Al-Khateab, who documents the Syrian Civil War through a unique perspective. The film is for her daughter Sama, who was born during filming, to explain why Waad chose not to leave the war-torn city and stay to fight oppression. During the years For Sama takes place, Waad falls in love, gets married to a doctor, and gives birth to Sama, all while bombs destroy the city and missiles shake the walls of Waad’s house. It’s an intimate boots-on-the-ground look at the war as well as an emotional attempt to try to explain the situation to her young daughter whose entire life is spent in wartime. Despite the graphic imagery and harsh realities of war — Waad’s camera is constantly rolling through airstrikes and the tragic aftermath — the indomitable spirit of her adorable family stays strong, allowing for heartwarming moments to shine through the pain. This is a film that grabs you and stays with you for a long time. PATIENTS, NOT CRIMINALS [Ernie & Joe: Crisis Cops]( [Ernie & Joe: Crisis Cops introduces much-needed empathy to the police debate]( Tuesday at 9/8c on HBO The police have a bad rap right now, which is why Ernie & Joe: Crisis Cops, about two cops in San Antonio who work with calls involving the mentally ill, is such a refreshing, moving watch. After a rash of all-too-familiar instances of fatal encounters between police and mentally ill individuals, Ernie Stevens and Joe Smarro are shaking up the system by using empathy and staying calm when dealing with the emergencies they handle, with the ultimate goal to find these people the help they need rather than put them in jail. The documentary features a lot of ride-along footage of the two at work, and the ways in which they handle these potentially dangerous situations is truly awe-inspiring and will make you wonder why this isn’t standard procedure all over the country. Ernie and Joe are also wonderful subjects, the kind of guys who give you hope in this world, and their friendship and respect for each other helps lighten the seriousness of what these two do day in and day out. PASS THE PASSIVE AGGRESSION [This Is Us]( [Gobble up a This Is Us Thanksgiving]( Tuesday at 8/7c on NBC Thanksgiving dinner is a time for families to gather around the table, pass the mashed potatoes, and dig up long-standing grudges and deep, dark secrets that turn the night into a feast of arguments. Tonight, the Pearsons gather together for the first time this season at Randall’s house for turkey and all the fixings, so expect to see at least one bowl of cranberry sauce ruined by the salty tears of familial anguish. Sure, they look happy in the picture above, but the big tension should come from Randall and Rebecca, [whose argument about Rebecca’s memory issues from a previous episode]( is still lingering in the air. SCHOOL’S OUT FOREVER [Booksmart]( [Booksmart graduates to streaming with honors]( Now on Hulu Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut is a good one, one of those comedies that comes out of nowhere to approach cult status and a future spot on cable TV’s weekend movie rotation. The teen comedy follows two seniors and best friends who are regarded by classmates as downers but are determined to cram four years of fun into the night before graduation so they don’t head off to college unfulfilled. It’s an R-rated teen comedy — the best kind — with the type of bawdy language that teens actually use, cameos from Jason Sudeikis, Will Forte, and Lisa Kudrow, and two fantastic performances from its leads Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever.
