Hulu has an important nature documentary that will warm your chilly heart and a brutal revenge flick

Hulu has an important nature documentary that will warm your chilly heart and a brutal revenge flick that will keep it black, and Netflix dips back into true crime while hunting down a Nazi war criminal. Hello! Yesterday was voting day across most of the country, and if you didn’t get enough of making your voice heard, we’ve got new opportunities to be part of democracy in action. Along with CNET and GameSpot, TV Guide is sponsoring a Halloween costume contest featuring participants from our audiences. There are four categories to choose from: [individual costumes]( [group costumes]( [kid costumes]( and (my favorite) [pet costumes](. If the weiner dog who was turned into a Mad Max: Fury Road rig doesn’t win, then I give up on the system. There are only three finalists in each category, so you won’t be flipping through a slideshow full of people dressed as Pennywise. Here are tonight’s TV picks. –Tim [Your Watch This Now! newsletter is created by Senior Recommendations and Reviews Editor Tim Surette and more show-obsessed editors at TV Guide!]( WATCH THIS NOW! [The Biggest Little Farm]( [The Biggest Little Farm is fertile ground for growth]( Now on Hulu If you’re like me, then the thought of watching a white couple from Los Angeles give up city life to start an organic farm sounds like a hard pass. But in the documentary The Biggest Little Farm, self-righteousness and hipster woke culture isn’t the star; nature in all her splendid beauty is. This stunning documentary manages to capture the power of life with incredible footage of flora and fauna, and the positive impact that humans can have, for a change, as the duo transforms neglected acreage into a thriving ecosystem where every animal big and small plays a part. It’s a good watch for the whole family, though there are some basic facts of life on full display here. This is one of those rare films where you’ll leave it feeling that you can make a difference. IT’S LIKE WATCHMEN, RIGHT? [The Masked Singer]( [The Masked Singer doubles the fun]( Wednesday at 8/7c on Fox What’s better than an episode of The Masked Singer? No episodes of The Masked Singer! Or, if you like it, two episodes of The Masked Singer, which is what you’re getting tonight. Because the World Series went seven games, Fox pushed an episode back and is doubling up this week. That means two unmaskings, which is the whole point of the show, right? MAKE IT A MOVIE NIGHT [The Nightingale]( [The Nightingale is a hard-to-watch tale of revenge]( Now on Hulu The success of the cult 2014 horror movie The Babadook from first-time director Jennifer Kent left many dying to know what Kent would do next. Instead of directing a film from one of the truckloads of scripts dumped at her feet, Kent took the time to write her own screenplay, The Nightingale, which is a departure from the horror of The Babadook. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still wildly intense, only this time, it’s a revenge flick set in the early 1800s in Tasmania. When a woman experiences tragedy at the hands of members of the British Army, she hunts them down in a fit of rage with the help of an aboriginal tracker. The Nightingale, which was positively reviewed upon release in 2018, isn’t for the faint of heart; there are scenes of sexual assault and one moment that made me literally flinch in horror — early screenings had some viewers walk out in disgust — but Kent is a wonderful, unflinching director who isn’t afraid of the uncomfortable. And don’t attempt to adjust your set; Kent purposefully filmed The Nightingale in 4:3 aspect ratio to set the mood. KNOCK KNOCK [The Devil Next Door]( [Is The Devil Next Door, or is it just a case of mistaken identity?]( Now on Netflix [Netflix’s love of true crime]( continues with The Devil Next Door, a five-episode series following a case that’s either the worst instance of mistaken identity ever or the unmasking of one of the worst war criminals in history. In the late 1970s, Ohio resident John Demjanjuk, a Ukrainian immigrant who worked at an auto factory, was taken in by authorities and accused of hiding that he was “Ivan the Terrible,” a cruel Nazi prison guard who delighted in torturing and murdering thousands of prisoners in heinous ways at a concentration camp during WWII. Demjanjuk denied it the whole time, and some evidence pointed to the fact that he was simply a churchgoing family man who was misidentified, but he stood multiple trials accused of butchering war prisoners decades earlier. The Devil Next Door includes more information to the case that further clouds things up, adding more doubt to a story that has no definitive conclusion.
