Beyoncé has a special gift just for you, NBC has a preview of its fall season of new and returning shows, and Jimmy Kimmel has some funny friends stop by for a late-night surprise.
Hello!
Our relationship as newsletter writer and newsletter reader is dependent on trust; I recommend shows to you, and you put some trust in me that I’m not steering you wrong. Which is why I have to come clean today: Though there are four recommendations below, there isn’t a lot of good stuff on TV tonight. We’re in that dead zone after summer but before the official start of the fall TV season. That’s why tonight might be a better night to spend on some good shows that may have slipped under your radar. I binged the highly addictive docuseries [Couples Therapy]( on Showtime over the weekend, and it’s a healthy dose of schadenfreude while also delivering intelligent insight into how therapy works for the clients and the therapist. I’m also a few episodes into Amazon’s Undone, an [animated series that plays with reality while also propping itself up with solid family drama](. Both are highly original and new TV experiences for me, a welcome feeling as we gear up for more of the same from the upcoming fall TV season. Here are tonight’s picks. –Tim

[Dancing with the Stars trots out one of its best lineups in years](
Season 28 premiere Monday at 8/7c on ABC
ABC’s prancing competition is almost entirely dependent on the quality of “stars” it can attract, and by that metric, [the new season is one of its best ever](. James Van Der Beek, The Bachelorette’s Hannah Brown, Queer Eye’s Karamo Brown, All That’s Kel Mitchell, The Office’s Kate Flannery, athletes Ray Lewis and Lamar Odom, and, [in a controversial choice]( former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer are among those who will pull a hammy attempting the paso doble, meaning at least one person you’re familiar with will be around for the long haul. Christie Brinkley was scheduled to participate, [but she had to cancel due to injury]( and will be replaced by her daughter. The show has been around for this long for good reason; the dancing is the window dressing for the show’s impressive display of personal growth.

[Are NBC’s new shows any good?](
Monday at 10/9c on NBC
The new fall TV season begins in one week, and chances are you’re woefully unprepared for the onslaught of doctors, lawyers, and messy family drama returning to your television set. NBC is giving a preview of its fall lineup with this primetime special, so you can not only get a peek at what the Pearsons are up to in the upcoming season of This Is Us, but you might also finally figure out what a Bluff City Law is. Keep an eye out for Sunnyside, the new comedy starring Kal Penn as a disgraced politician who helps a group of misfit immigrants become U.S. citizens, as it’s the best of NBC’s new shows — though admittedly that’s not saying a whole lot. The special will be hosted by “comedy stars,” according to NBC.

[Beyoncé has a gift for you](
Monday at 10/9c on ABC
Beyoncé received a grand total of zero Emmys for her Netflix documentary special Homecoming, and apparently [that was a big deal to Beyoncé’s legion of fans](. But Bey doesn’t need your awards, so she’s lined up another behind-the-scenes special she probably won’t win any Emmys for. Beyoncé Presents: Making the Gift is a look at how the Beyoncé-produced soundtrack for The Lion King came about, and includes footage of the queen gathering inspiration from her travels through Africa and translating that inspiration into music for the movie.

[Why is Jimmy Kimmel having a ton of comedians on his show?](
Monday at 11:35/10:35c on ABC
Tonight’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live features sit-downs with Black-ish star Anthony Anderson, author Malcolm Gladwell, and singer Melanie Martinez, but we’re looking at the list of “special guests” and wondering what the heck Jimmy Kimmel has in store. Comedians Whitney Cummings, Henry Winkler, Jeff Ross, and Natasha Leggero are all scheduled to appear, so they must be up to something. Is it a new fake game show? Is it a big presidential debate bit? Is it an impromptu roast? We’ll be watching to find out.
