The Handmaidâs Tale searches for redemption in its Season 3 finale, Netflixâs latest conspiracy theory docuseries will leave you thinking, and HBO explores the new ways we handle our demise.
Hello!
Imagine you’re a fan of some of the greatest rap icons of all-time and all you live for is to see your idols in a casual setting. You know, like on a talk show. Then you take a peek at tonight’s guests for the big three late-night talk shows and see that [Jimmy Kimmel Live!]( has [Snoop Dogg]( [The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon]( has [Ice Cube]( and [The Late Show with Stephen Colbert]( has [50 Cent](. Wow! Since all three programs air at the same time, it’s going to take a few TVs or some Wu-Tang mastery of the remote control to catch all of them, so good luck out there. Here are tonight’s TV picks. - Tim

Series premieres Wednesday at 10/9c on OWN
Moonlight co-writer [Tarell Alvin McCraney]( wrote this beautiful coming-of-age story based on his own life, and it’s already cemented a spot in my list of the year’s best shows. The drama follows David, a 14-year-old boy in Florida whose life is divided by his potential as a bright magnet student at a mostly white school, his duties as a son and older brother responsible for keeping his family afloat, and the temptations to run drugs with the gang that rules the projects in which he lives. Like a lot of young people of color pressured by the world around them, David adapts new personas to fit each environment but doesn’t feel comfortable in any of them, drifting off into bouts of gorgeous visual surrealism as a means to escape it all. It’s not always an easy watch — the reality of violence and painful decisions lurks around every corner — but its authenticity makes it a beautiful and eye-opening depiction of the struggle most of us can only imagine.

Grab your tinfoil hat and make sure it fits snugly, because you’re going to be wearing it for a while after watching this docuseries. The Family pulls the veil off a semi-secret Christian organization called the Fellowship Foundation, known as “The Family” internally, whose influence in politics has allegedly been pulling strings and running things for decades. With members in Congress and other high-powered institutions, the Fellowship Foundation pushes its agenda with events like the National Prayer Breakfast, and The Family, based on the writing of a former member, goes deep into the group’s recruitment process and the secret meetings held in an opulent house in Virginia. The allegations are brought to life with some iffy dramatic reenactments, but the audacity of the cult-like organization is too good to pass up.

Season 3 Finale now on Hulu
Fans hoping that the third season of The Handmaid’s Tale would break the previous two seasons’ cycle of horrifying bleakness got… more horrifying bleakness. But some of that dreariness gets paid off in the Season 3 finale, which sees June face her greatest challenge yet: moving a caravan of children out of the clutches of Gilead and into the safety of Canada. The show’s executive producer Warren Littlefield told us to [expect a big cliffhanger at the end]( so have a few puppies and Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry Be Happy” on hand in case things don’t go well. If you’ve already seen the finale, [we talked to executive producer Bruce Miller about what to expect in Season 4](.

[Alternative Endings: Six New Ways to Die in America](
[Chill out, Death, we ain’t scared no more](
Wednesday at 8/9c on HBO
Unless you’re part of the Illuminati and take annual soaks in the Fountain of Youth, you’re going to croak one day. And just as our views on life have changed as we’ve progressed as human beings, so have our views on death. The HBO documentary special Alternate Endings: Six New Ways to Die in America looks at the new ways Americans are choosing to memorialize their lives as they head for the light. These six cases of end-of-life decisions — from getting shot into space to treating it with *gasp* humor — show that getting thrown into a box in the ground after suffering in misery is an outdated practice. Obviously there’s some sadness involved in watching this, but I hope you’ll see that the hourlong film is all about the beauty in taking control of the inevitable rather than fearing it.
