Love is in the air in a spectacular episode of an HBO comedy, a bizarre Netflix movie mixes satire and horror in the art world, and the post-Super Bowl show is loaded with talent.
Hello!
We know you’ll probably be watching the [Super Bowl]( this Sunday (6:30 p.m. Eastern, 3:30 p.m. Pacific on CBS), but the real competition will be on two other networks: Animal Planet and Hallmark. For the fifteenth year in a row, Animal Planet will air [The Puppy Bowl]( (programming starts at noon), and for the sixth year in a row, Hallmark counters with [The Kitten Bowl]( (Sunday starting at 2/1c). And on Saturday, older furry friends get their due as Animal Planet airs The Dog Bowl II, while Hallmark airs the first-ever Cat Bowl ([check your local listings](. But we have to ask: If you’re Animal Planet, are you flattered or perturbed by Hallmark’s imitation? Are you excited about the prospect of more animals getting adopted, or are you upset that someone stole your idea? [Ryan Murphy]( we think we just found the subject for your next season of [Feud]( Here are our TV picks for the weekend:

Limited series premieres Friday on Netflix
We don’t normally tell you when to watch things, but we recommend you binge this breezy eight-episode dramedy on Friday, because you’ll want to spend all weekend thinking about it after you’re done. [Natasha Lyonne]( ([Orange Is the New Black]( has never been better, playing a woman who relives the same day of her life over and over again in a real head-scratcher that asks big questions about life and morality. To say much more would ruin the experience, so dive in being none the wiser for maximum WTF-ery. It’s exhilarating, it’s thought-provoking, and it will leave you with big feelings swirling around your noggin. A note to Netflix: We’re crossing our fingers that there isn’t a Season 2, because it’s perfectly self-contained and doesn’t need any more. Don’t [Big Little Lies]( this thing.
LOVE IS IN THE AIR
[Crashing](
[A wonderful episode of Crashing will give you heart eyes](
Sunday at 10/9c on HBO, or Friday on HBO Go and HBO Now
[Pete Holmes]( semi-autobiographical comedy about a New York comedian named Pete Holmes started its third season a few weeks back, but this week’s episode is a real charmer. It’s easy enough to catch up and watch the first two episodes, but the gist is Pete has a new girlfriend, Kat, and they’re starting the type of torrid relationship that only happens when a can of love is freshly cracked open. It will make you feel all the giddiness of falling for and getting to know someone, in honest and observational Pete Holmes style, and when Kat challenges Pete in ways he’s not used to, you’ll want these two to stay together forever. Plus, lube plays a big part in a great gag, there’s plenty of fedora hate, and [Ray Romano]( makes a cameo. You also don’t have to wait until Sunday to watch it; HBO is making Crashing (as well as new episodes of [True Detective]( and [High Maintenance]( available on its streaming apps because it thinks we’ll all be too wasted from the Super Bowl to stay awake. (Fair.)
YEAR OF THE PIG
[Fresh Off the Boat](
[Fresh Off the Boat rings in the new year](
Friday at 8/7c on ABC
Most television wouldn’t air a holiday episode in the beginning of February, but most television isn’t Fresh Off the Boat. The Huangs celebrate Chinese New Year the way every family celebrates holidays: with plenty of food bookended by family infighting. Those squabbles includes betting cash on wrestling between father and son, the race to eat the lucky fish eye at dinner and some intense mahjong. As usual, Chinese traditions aren’t always a hit with the younger Americanized Huangs, which is Fresh Off the Boat’s bread and butter. The episode is worth watching just to see Jessica’s dumpling wrapping technique.
ARTSY-FARTSY-DEADSY
[Velvet Buzzsaw](
[Velvet Buzzsaw cuts through the art world and a bunch of bodies](
Premieres Friday on Netflix
If you’ve ever seen a pompous citizen of the art world and thought, “I wish they would just die already,” then we’ve got something for you. [Jake Gyllenhal]( puts on his second irreverent and bizarre performance for a Netflix film (the first being the wonderful [Okja]( as an art critic who discovers a cache of paintings that may be haunted. Or something. Honestly, this looks wonderfully weird, and it transforms from satire about the art world into a horror movie that leaves behind a pile of corpses. The all-star cast includes [Toni Collette]( [Rene Russo]( [John Malkovich]( and more.
WORLD’S GOT TALENT
[The World's Best](
[World’s Best is the lucky post-Super Bowl show this year](
Sunday, following the Super Bowl on CBS
Congratulations, CBS! You get the Super Bowl and its 100-million-plus audience, but how are you going to hold on to all those people once the game ends? By airing The World’s Best as the post-Super Bowl show! Cool! Wait, what’s The World’s Best? It’s the first show to make its series premiere after the big game since [Undercover Boss]( did in 2010. Think [America’s Got Talent]( but… actually, just think America’s Got Talent. The difference here is that after performers show off their goods and a panel of three judges score them, a “wall” of 50 other judges from around the world also share their opinion with a yes/no light system. [James Corden]( hosts, with a celebrity panel made up of [Faith Hill]( [Drew Barrymore]( and [RuPaul](.
