[TV Guide Watch This Now!](
Hello!
Did you watch last week’s premiere of [The Masked Singer]( If you did, you weren’t alone. An eye-popping 9.3 million viewers watched the bizarre show’s first episode last Wednesday, making it the most-watched reality debut in the last seven years. That’s insane! But we have a theory on why it’s such a big success, and it’s something that’s already hooked children with a toy craze that’s sweeping the nation. The Masked Singer — in which celebrities sing hits while wearing outrageous costumes that hide their identity — is essentially [Hatchimals]( or [LOL Dolls]( (or any other toys where the prize is hidden inside packaging) for adults; all the tension comes from revealing what’s inside the package, not from who is inside or what happens before. That kind of psychology works great with 5-year-olds (as any parent knows), but will it continue to work with grown-ups? Tomorrow’s ratings reports will be something to keep an eye on. Here are our TV picks for tonight:

[You're the Worst](
[You’re the Worst is one of the best](
Season 5 premieres Wednesday at 10/9c on FXX
Gretchen and Jimmy’s bumpy ride to marital bliss is supposedly going to reach its destination in the final season of this raunchy, oddly romantic and uneven comedy, but Season 5 appears to be a return to form. The two self-absorbed disasters are getting married, and you can bet your butt that they’re going to screw it up as much as they can until they accidentally fall into lifelong love through some cosmic, out-of-their-control coincidence. There’s an epic Sunday Funday in the season, and early word is that the series finale nails it.
DREAM OF THE ‘90s
[Schooled](
[Schooled rings in the latest spin-off](
Series premieres Wednesday at 8:30/7:30c on ABC
[The Goldbergs]( has quietly become one of ABC’s steadiest family comedies, so it’s understandable that the network is taking the expected route with a post-school spin-off. This one is set in the 1990s and follows Lainey, Big Tasty’s ex-girlfriend and Erica’s BFF, as she begins a career as the music teacher at the school that she, Adam and everyone went to. It also bumps up two of The Goldbergs’ best side characters, Coach Mellor and Principal Glascott, to main characters. Stylistically and tonally, it’s nearly identical to The Goldbergs, which is a good thing, and seeing how this is technically a sequel, there are also a few Goldbergs gags in there for hardcore fans. (Wait til you see who ended up as the school’s janitor.)
HER ENTHUSIASM CAN’T BE CURBED
[I'm Sorry](
[I’m Sorry is unapologetically brash and funny](
Season 2 premieres Wednesday at 10/9c on truTV
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Curb Your Enthusiasm must be capital-F flattered by Andrea Savage’s comedy. But that’s not a knock on I’m Sorry; imitation done right can be just as good as the original, and with the right tweak — Andrea is a 30-something hot mom with a 5-year-old, not an older Jewish man — it can brush aside all thoughts of copy-catting. Like Larry, Andrea gets in awkward social situations because people are the worst, and like Curb, I’m Sorry is hilarious. It’s produced by [Will Ferrell]( and [Andy Samberg]( Lonely Island, with [Jason Mantzoukas]( [Judy Greer]( and [Tom Everett Scott]( (and tons of famous guests) also starring.
MUST HAVE STUFF
[Jon Glaser Loves Gear](
[Jon Glaser Loves Gear is materialistically meta](
Season 2 premieres Wednesday at 10:30/9:30c on truTV
A fake show host’s personal life in crisis overshadowing the fake show itself isn’t new to television; Comedy Central’s extraordinary series [Review]( nailed that premise. This series puts together something similar as comedian [Jon Glaser]( plays an exaggerated version of himself who is hosting a show about gear and gadgets, but Jon Glaser Loves Gear is actually about the crumbling life and abrasive arrogance of his on-screen alter-ego while he prioritizes his show over his (fake) real life. Tonight’s season premiere is all about survival gear... in that Glaser sends his sidekick into the woods with no survival gear after truTV tells him that the sidekick is more popular with audiences than he is and will replace him. It’s a fun, meta gem.
UNDERSTAND THE IRON FIST
[The Dictator's Playbook](
[The Dictator’s Playbook looks oddly familiar](
Series premieres Wednesday at 10/9c on PBS
The ability for a single human being to bring a country to its knees isn’t just happenstance; there’s a whole sequence of events that goes into a dictator taking control. This PBS miniseries looks at six figures who ruled with an iron fist — Mussolini, Hussein and others — and highlights their commonalities to show how dictatorships are formed... you know, in case you happen to see someone trying to attempt the same thing in your country.
