Your Daily Automobile updates From Around The World [  The Automobile News]( You Might Like [Learn more about RevenueStripe...](    [Semiconductor Shortage And The U.S. Auto Industry](  Semiconductors have become so ubiquitous that it is easy to take them for granted until they are suddenly in short supply. Recent changes in global market demand for semiconductors has increased dramatically at a time when the world is moving towards technical innovations in renewable energy, electric vehicles and artificial intelligence. As America recovers from the economic toll the COVID-19 pandemic has caused, a critical shortage of this important electronic component has disrupted production in industries ranging from medical devices, computers, defense technologies, and in no small part, the U.S. auto industry. While there appears to be no quick antidote to this supply chain malaise, compared to other countries, the United States may be in the best position to help its businesses navigate global semiconductor supply chain limitations, albeit with political leverage rather than through domestic capacity. Semiconductors are essential to the production of integrated circuits or chips. A single chip can include thousands or even millions of semiconductors. The semiconductors are very difficult to manufacture since they are hundredths of times smaller than a human hair. Modern, technologically advanced cars use a multitude of sensors and controllers which rely on chips to send information throughout the vehicle. Though the company had been making trucks and buses for decades and utility vehicles for many years, it was its first attempt at cars. Indica was also the first car to be designed and manufactured by an Indian company. It was a good start. Tata Motors sold about a million Indicas, and went on to make several other models and cornered a market share of 17 per cent in a decade. But things went south soon, as the company struggled with the ambitious Nano project. By 2013, its market share slipped to single digits, and questions were raised about its sustainability. Though it churned out at least one model every year, none made any impact till the Tiago in 2016 and the Nexon a year later. A game-changer came in 2019, in the form of the Harrier, made on the Omega platform derived from the Tata-owned British carmaker Jaguar Land Rover. Even as the automobile industry struggled to deal with the pandemic and lockdowns, Tata Motors’s passenger vehicle sales surged 69 per cent from a year ago to 2,22,025 units in the year-ended March 2021. This is when the sector saw a drop of 2 per cent in sales. It was the highest sales in the segment for Tata Motors in eight years, helping it regain the third spot behind market leader Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor India. “Tata Motors gained market share across segments, leading to overall market share of 8.3 per cent, on the back of a strong product portfolio,” said Jinesh Gandhi, research analyst at Motilal Oswal Financial Services. Sitting in a helicopter, I saw the road reflecting the sunlight, like a golden dragon crouching on the land,” said Zhang, who was deputy chief engineer of the Shanghai-Jiading Expressway. “Back then, cars could only run as fast as 80 kilometers per hour, and China’s automotive industry was underdeveloped,” he said. “Some experts felt building an expressway with a 120 km/h speed limit was pointless. So the Shanghai-Jiading Expressway was launched as a pilot program.” In 1988, the 15.9-km road linking Shanghai with the satellite city of Jiading was completed, marking a milestone in China’s expressway development. Three decades later, the country’s expressway network stretches for 160,000 km, ranking first in the world. As the expressways have grown, the development of the auto industry in China has also been switched to an express track.
