Thursday’s airplane-power announcement is the most recent of this week’s GM news about plans for an electrified, autonomous, low-emissions future for transportation. The airplane fuel-cell deal is with Europe’s Liebherr-Aerospace and there’s a big asterisk: The fuel cell technology wouldn’t propel the plane. Instead, it would be a replacement for the auxiliary power unit (APU) that sits in the tail of the aircraft and generates electrical and air power when the plane is on the ground or during an in-flight emergency. Could more powerful fuel cell systems one day drive electric motors that turn airplane propellers? “That’s been talked about. Anything’s possible,” says Charlie Freese, GM’s global executive for Hydrotec, adding, “Over time, I can see how propulsion can become one of the applications” of an aircraft fuel cell. As reported recently by the ratings agency Care Ratings, “in May, factory dispatches of passenger vehicles and two-wheelers contracted to one-third of the level of the previous month, while three-wheelers made negligible sales of just about 1,200 units.” The top five players in the commercial vehicle industry reported cumulative sales of nearly half the levels of April. Tractor sales were down 12%. From carts and carriages pulled by animals in the ancient ages to vehicles that automatically drive themselves today, the way we traverse over land has seen a massive transformation, to say the least. Cars, since their invention just about two centuries ago has gone from being an innovative marvel to a luxury, now, have become a necessity for most people. The automotive industry, pioneered by stalwarts like Ford and Benz, has seen a steady growth in the decades leading to today, but the evolution of the industry in the pre-digital era is nothing compared to the rapid transformation it is presently undergoing. The past decade has seen the pervasion of every conceivable digital technology into the process of making or driving a motor vehicle. Be it artificial intelligence, big data, the internet of things, or blockchain, every form of digital technology is converging in the automobile industry. The digital transformation in the automotive industry is poised to transform not just the way cars are driven, but also the way they are made and conceived.
